Quotes
-
Mary Mulvane : Please say what you've got to say, and leave.
Jonas Pike : What I have to say is very much in your interest, if you like. And the baby. You know I've made an offer for your husband's wheat crop?
Mary Mulvane : I do.
Jonas Pike : You know the full extent of that offer? Are you aware of the *advantages* it offers you both? And of course the baby.
Mary Mulvane : I have.
Jonas Pike : And are you aware of the *consequences* should he refuse that offer?
Mary Mulvane : Yes, I think so.
Jonas Pike : [smiles] Ah, good.
[goes over to the fireplace]
Jonas Pike : Just so you realize that it's you and the little one that will be affected should your husband choose to be stubborn about it.
Mary Mulvane : Is that all?
[opens the door for him]
Jonas Pike : [he's lit his pipe, now stands up] Yes. So. He won't get it in without our help.
[as he walks out]
Jonas Pike : You do realize that, don't you?
[stokes his pipe]
Jonas Pike : We're neighbors, Mrs. Garrett. It's only right and proper that neighbors should help each other. And I can help you, believe me.
Mary Mulvane : We're only neighbors because you and Greville swindled poor Sam Fitchett out of his farm. You're not going to do that to us.
Jonas Pike : Neighbors, Mrs. Garrett. Close.
[drops a flame onto some loose twigs]
Jonas Pike : A lot of things could happen to that crop before harvest, hot weather like this.
[Mary stares at the flame, aghast]
Jonas Pike : I shouldn't wait too long, if I was you.
[stomps out the flame underneath his boot]
-
Mary Mulvane : What do we want with six gallons of rum?
Jonas Pike : Oh, please yourself. Do what you like with them.
