Arthur bursts in with news of some work with Tony, fixing up Naima's shop. They have the money spent in their minds within minutes.
Andy tries to apologise to Mary, who is back in punk dress, for not wanting a relationship with her. In spite of the fact that things are looking up for her, with her learning to read and write, as Andy points out - she is miserable by her own account.
Arthur and Pauline try to talk to Michelle about her decision to marry Lofty.
Kath gets a call from Angie in Ibetha who is looking for Den. Kath lies and says that Den is out on an errand although she has no idea where he is. When she tells Pete, he reveals that Den is back - back with Jan.
Kathy airs her strong opinions on smoking (including the idea of a non-smoking pub - which she hopes will catch on) and upsets Dot.
Michelle and Sharon discuss the men in their lives, including the mysterious father of Michelle's baby.
A more humble Rod calls in to the shop and asks Debbie on a 'no pressure' date and they arrange for him to come to Debbie's for a drink that night.
Simon is baffled that Naima thought that what they had was anything more than a "bit of fun" and discusses it with Lofty.
Lofty saves Ethel from a brush with the law in the form of Rod. Her fortune telling services are in demand and lead to a humorous moment and then a more complicated one with Dot, who becomes convinced that her husband Charlie is coming back to her.
Debbie, Andy and Naima discuss changes in their living arrangements but Andy's growing resentments find him in a foul mood. Rod turns up for his date but Andy's mood drives him away and the episode ends with Andy and Debbie shouting at each other.
