Danish Gypsy Dance
Zigeunerdans af Troubaduren (1906)
Another Danish film from director Peter Elfelt, this one here pretty much just showing a woman doing an gypsy dance for 59-seconds. Those familiar with these early films will know that many studios filmed women dancing and apparently these made a lot of money, which is probably the biggest reason that so many were made. This here really isn't any different than what you'd expect to see from Edison but where this is different is the set. It's obvious that this was filmed on a very small set so that the director could get the lighting he wanted and this causes the dancer to have a limited range. She can only made a few steps in each direction but what is interesting here is that the director made a lavish backdrop to give the film a better visual. In most of these type of films we're given no background and they look rather cheap but this one here certainly tried for something a little different.
