Geno McGahee, the Massachusetts-based independent writer/director behind the microbudgeters Evil Awakening and Rise Of The Scarecrows, got in touch with info and a couple of exclusive pics (see them below) from his new feature, Family Secret. “I acquired a large budget, by my standards,” he tells us, “hired a cinematographer, editor, lighting and sound professionals. I also brought in real actors and a special effects team to make Family Secret a technically sound high-definition horror movie.”
The story centers on a journalist (Forris Day Jr.) who is reunited with his family after his grandmother dies, and is soon reminded of why he’s stayed out of touch with them in the first place. Unfortunately, his attempts to resever those ties are stymied when his relatives begin to get murdered, apparently by the back-from-the-dead granny, and he becomes the prime suspect. The supporting cast includes Leeann Aubuchon and Rick Caride...

• Dark Sky Films has announced a pair of vintage chillers debuting April 28. The company passed on cover art and details for 1966’s The She-beast and 1974’s The Centerfold Girls.
She-beast, the debut feature by writer/director Michael Reeves of The Conqueror Worm/Witchfinder General, stars genre veterans Barbara Steele and Ian Ogilvy as newlyweds who get into a car accident while driving through a town in Transylvania. Their vehicle winds up submerged in a lake, and while the husband emerges as himself, his wife comes out possessed by the vengeful spirit of an 18th-century witch. The movie will be presented in a new 16x9-enhanced widescreen transfer from original vault materials, with audio commentary by Steele, Ogilvy and producer Paul Maslansky. John Peyser’s Centerfold Girls, starring B-movie stalwart Andrew Prine as a madman “punishing” women who have posed for a men’s magazine, also gets a new uncut transfer from the original camera negative,...

A boatload of movies hit on a very few DVDs this Tuesday, August 19th, 2008. See what I mean below!
6 Films to Keep You Awake (2008)
Directed by Various
As the title implies, in this three-disc set are six brand-new short films from some of Spain’s most interesting directors like Paco (Romasanta, Rec) Plaza (“The Christmas Tale”), Alex (Day of the Beast) de la Iglesia (“The Baby’s Room”), and Jaume (Rec, The Nameless) Balaguero (“To Let”), just to name a few. Each film has its own “making of” documentary as well as other featurettes. Buy it here!
An American Crime (2007)
Directed by Tommy O’Haver
It’s strange to me that a movie with Ellen Page ... sorry, Academy Award nominee Ellen Page ... wouldn’t be able to get theatrical release, even if the subject of said film is about as taboo as you can get. American Crime is an adaptation...
