When a police search of the minnoch area yields no flake white paint, which is on Campbell's pallette and landscape, Wimsey draws the logical conclusion that the painting was done elsewhere and the body dumped there in order to give the appearance of an accident. With six resident artists in the small Scottish community Wimsey concludes that one is the murderer and the other five red herrings. The case is further complicated by the lack of a credible alibi on the part of any of the suspects.
