One of the best South African movies
shaunalc5 September 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Well where to begin, when I first watched this movie, I thought it would be a typical Afrikaans movie (Bad acting, no real or original story line) but was I surprised, it is really a great movie. The movie is in Afrikaans with English subs, but for those Afrikaans speaking people out the it's truly a great modern movie. It's a typical movie about a boy in high school who is always a outcast and is willing to do anything for the high school sweetheart. In this case it is playing rugby, unlike most movies where the underdog finds out he is great at a sport, this one the underdog actually has to train for it. And during this time he and the high school prom queen actually fall in love. It's a great romantic comedy that will have you laughing from the beginning and crying at the end.

Don't watch this!

Warning: Spoilers
This is a BAD movie full of cheesy one liners, BAD sexual humor and extremely unoriginal. I can name a number of movies with the EXACT same plot but the one best suited is: She's all that. You know the guy makes a bet that he can turn the unattractive, weird and clumsy chick into the next big thing? This is that exact movie just this time it's a girl making the bet.

Again please don't waste your time on this, the acting is bad and very forced and the script seems like the work of a teen sex addict. Oh wait! that's the target audience...

Terrible and VERY unimaginative.

This is a fresh teen comedy in Afrikaans a very good storyline with Ivan Botha,Cherie Vander merwe,Lelia Etsabeth en Will Roberts. The story is about a teenage geek who is very unpopular. The most popular girl in school state's that she can make that geek the most popular rugby player in school with very funny results. Tthis is the typical girl doesn't like boy but falls for him anyway nothing new but still very good if you want to see all the gags especially the sex therapy class sequences you better watch this asap. The movie does have English subtitles so really anyone can watch it. This movie also have a second and a third installment that follow up on this one so make sure you watch this one 1st

Really cute romantic comedy. Not necessarily an original idea, however it was written well and the humor was on point. Definitely recommend.

"Bakgat!: A Hilarious and Heartwarming Comedy About High School Rugby and Finding Yourself"
impactacademy10 January 2024
"Bakgat!" is a 2008 South African comedy film directed by Henk Pretorius. The movie tells the story of Wimpie Koekemoer, the biggest geek in school who dreams of being popular. His dream could unexpectedly become a reality when the most popular girl in school, Katrien Swanepoel, is dumped by first-team rugby center Werner 'Killer' Botha. Katrien and her friends Liezl and Christie decide to give Werner a taste of his own medicine by planning to make Wimpie the new first team center. Rugby is a lot harder than Karien and Wimpie anticipated, and Wimpie almost gives up. Fortunately, his unexpected popularity leads to friendship with school rascals Japie and Fanie. The mischievous duo unknowingly convince Wimpie to keep playing rugby although they're much more interested in pajama parties with girls. Bakgat is finding yourself, despite high school.

The movie is a hilarious and heartwarming comedy that celebrates the importance of friendship, perseverance, and finding oneself. The pace of the movie is fast, and the audience is kept engaged throughout. The cinematography is stunning, and the performances by the cast are exceptional. Ivan Botha delivers a nuanced and complex performance that captures the character's inner turmoil and transformation.

Overall, "Bakgat!" is a must-see film that will leave you laughing and entertained. It is a masterpiece that deserves to be seen and appreciated by all.

This is one of the best Afrikaans movie about teen romance to be invented in South Africa that I ever watched, ait is definitely worth watching, I recommend that you check it out , it's also child friendly do you can watch it with kids from 14 years going up I assure you they will definitely enjoy it. There's a bit of comedy here and there so you will share a good laugh together, and even if you don't understand the language spoken but you will definitely understand the movie coz it is that clear and there are also subtitles to help you understand even more about the movie, I definitely recommend you check it out.
