A transitional episode of a great miniseries, maybe not up to par with the earlier stories, but still memorable.

Warning: Spoilers
Several new major characters are introduced in the third episode of this great miniseries which starts off with the tragedy that I didn't see coming, and while that part was disappointing, it led to an episode that is more character driven in nature than plot driven. Veteran actresses Rachel Kempson (Lady Redgrave) and Peggy Ashcroft add a total touch of class as the aunt of the late Daphne Manners and her all-knowing companion, with Geraldine James and Wendy Morgan added as well as the two new young heroines. Kempson has taken on her niece's mixed race baby, and the evil Ronald Merrick seems to be getting psychological comeuppance for his misdeeds in the second episode. There's curiosity and scandal over the child and that leads to James being curious as to the baby who lives next door. It's always great to see Dame Peggy ashcroft, especially after seeing her in the same years of Passage to India, for which she won practically every film awards that year. I believe this is my first discovery of Rachel Kempson, widow of Michael Redgrave and mother of Lynn and vanessa, and she is just fantastic. Still, the episode feels like it's moving from one part of the story to another, where things haven't yet fully developed, so while it's not great, it's a necessary step to get from point A to point B. Technically, the series is still brilliant, so with some must to see to gather all the details about the drama before and the drama yet to come.
