A loser stays lost?

Warning: Spoilers
THE VISITOR, a short which clocks in at under 15 minutes, is a haphazardly-edited piece (what my film appreciation prof would call achronological). The gist of the story seems to be that a dad who's been cut off from all contact with his only child, Amy--who is about to turn 7--drives hundreds of miles in an attempt to give her a birthday present, but gets cold feet doing even that (despite his earlier-shown fantasy of just snatching her up to obtain HIS six years' of custody of which a national court system stacked against fathers' rights has deprived him). Writer\director Dan Lee West has stolen this entire scene from Billy Bigelow's star theft and rebuff by his young teen daughter in CAROUSEL, of course, but maybe he plagiarizes intentionally to serve his larger allegorical needs (in which the Dad represents America, the girl the lost innocence of the United States, and the step-dad who swoops up Amy at the close is probably supposed to be Norway).
