Warriors Mortality
hellraiser722 February 2024
This is one of my favorite episodes of the show; this is a dark episode that almost feels like an episode David Cronenberg would have directed as the episode is body horror. Which I'll admit is a daring move considering the time, but I love that showing this show along with 90's animation in general isn't afraid of going that extra mile; usually when that happens is where the best things turn out. It's true this kind of story might be a bit predictable, as this kind of story has been done in many episodes but still your in suspense because of how much you care about the character and there is that looming uncertainty as there is still that possibility of things going sideways fast. But what really powers this episode is that is in its drama of moving in its drama, if you can believe that; because it reminds us heroes are mortal.

I'll admit throughout the episode I was worried for Conan's life; sure, Conan has been though a lot of tough fixes. But this is different because for once it's not something he can fight with his sword, for the enemy is disease. We see this curse/disease engineered by Wrath a Mon is slowly but surely transforming Conan's body. Seeing it was disturbing as time is ticking away you constantly wonder how much worse Conan is going to get. However, what makes it all the scarier and sadder is we're afraid this disease/curse could also be neurological as it could possibly affect Conan's mind making him lose his soul in the process.

The episode also has a sense of dread, doom, and even possible futility as we see Conan and friends are seeking every possibility for a cure but unfortunately time and hope are running out as possibilities are few and nonexistent; but also, we see the friend's effort to retrieve as possible cure has been put to a dead halt.

There is a sad moment when we see the disease/curse is taking Conan's body where he's just about unrecognizable. We see Conan passing everything to his friends, to continue his quest without him. I remember thinking, "no this can't be real, can it?" sadly it is and it just made me realize how truly human Conan is, no matter how strong or good a hero is; not every battle can be won for defeat and death itself are never far behind.

The other theme of the episode was on honoring and keeping a cause and dream alive. From what happens at the end it shows how unbreakable that honor truly is. But most important importantly how unbreakable friendship can for as long as there is love, one is never truly gone.

Rating: 4 stars.
