Maxxx is a cringe inducing comedy of an egoist former pop star attempting a comeback with his boyband.
O-T Fagbenle writes and stars as Maxxx who looks a lot like Craig David. The joke being he gets angry for always being mistaken for Craig David.
The first episode sees Maxxx making appearances in nightclubs with his adopted son Amit in tow.
His only chance to hit the big time again is to get his boy band together and appeal to the middle aged.
It is just that the other members do not want to know. One of them dies and Maxxx gets up and starts to sing at the funeral to get attention.
Fagbenle pokes fun at artists such as Kanye West and Craig David during his first incarnation as a pop star which David now acknowledges. Fagbenle just about gets away with the desperation and absurdness.
There is a good cast assembled including Christopher Meloni as a larger than life music mogul.
The first episode has verve but it was uneven and some of it was just too familiar from other shows ranging from Entourage to Brian Pern and those parodies of pop talent shows.
