Has any romance ever been more fun to watch than that between House and Wilson?
AlsExGal29 September 2021
This dance they do is intriguing. Wilson seems insightful enough to see through House's games, and yet he continues to play them for years. Until his girlfriend dies suddenly and that shock makes him realize he's been enabling House all of these years. And so he leaves his job, and the hospital, and House. This is just some background.

House's father dies and he refuses to go to the funeral because he disliked him so much and does not want to be a hypocrite about his death. House passes out in his office as a result of Cuddy drugging House at Wilson's request and House regains consciousness on the road in Wilson's car being driven to the funeral. Wilson is emphatic that he is doing this for House's mom, not House. That nothing has changed between them.

House does everything conceivable to sabotage Wilson's mission, and you'd THINK that after years of being manipulated by House - that's why Wilson left in the first palace - that Wilson would see through House's behavior. He does not.

House even causes Wilson to speed - by putting his cane on the accelerator when a cop is nearby - and gets them pulled over. But the delay tactic works better than House intended - Wilson has an outstanding warrant in Louisiana and they are both arrested.

Meanwhile, back at the hospital, there is a 25 year old Chinese American girl who is at first believed to have SARS, due to a trip she recently took to China to find her biological parents. She has had addictive behavior for years - smoking, drinking, drugs. Her adopted Caucasian parents just think it is a prolonged crisis of identity due to being adopted. The team tries to carry on without House, but struggles.

In the end this episode is playing out a tired message in a very new way - We're all screwed up by our parents in some way. Maybe it is because we are so much like them and we literally can't live with ourselves, or maybe they really do something that is monstrous. That's one half of the episode. The other half is the road trip of House and Wilson, and how these two really need each other. Wilson is attracted to House's risky side yet dogs him about it. House is attracted to Wilson's caring side yet dogs him about it. Both get in trouble when they explore this unfamiliar territory - riskiness and caring - alone.

My dad is dead.
lastliberal15 October 2008
It is interesting that I see this episode right after watching Les Revenants, which is also about death. It seemed so appropriate.

While House is the featured mourner, don't think he is the only one. The others, Dr. Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard) and the featured case (Samantha Quan), were also about death in a less subtle way.

But, House's travails, I suspect, would cause a lot of viewers to examine their relationships with their own fathers, alive or dead. And, like House, we would probably agree that, no matter how our relationship was then or how our memories are now, we are who we are because of our father, for better or worse.

Maybe it is not death that is the topic, but relationships. Whatever the case, it was another outstanding episode and an example of why this is the most intelligent show on TV.

Perfect episode

Warning: Spoilers
House / Wilson road trip Interesting medical mystery Interesting team interaction old and new Only about a minute of Cuddy. Can't ask for more.

Chase is insightful about what House is going through. Sometimes he's the one who gets House best .

Kutner develops a rapport with the patient and figure out what House means before the others.

The road trip to the funeral of House's father is really the center of the episode but there's a pretty good balance with the patient of the week and a good twist.

Good to have the guys back together!
AnnaShade9 December 2008
First, I have to say that I've always been a huge fan of House and Wilson as best friends. The two have a great dynamic. They are very similar in ways, and in others they are at completely opposite ends of the spectrum. They're hysterical together! And I missed that...

The episode reminds me of why I like their friendship so much, and of why I missed Wilson after Amber's death. The episode also delves into House's past and his issues with his father. There's a surprise thrown in that I didn't really see coming. It should make for some interesting episodes to come, though. Cuddy's role, while brief, is very funny.

Overall, it's an enjoyable episode with a lot of pranks, mischief, some painful (in a good way) moments, and fun. I highly recommend this episode.

OH! And House's ring tone kills me! It's Mmm Bop by the Hanson Brothers! I used to love those guys when I was little. Just the fact that House has that song as a ring tone cracks me up.

Pure House!

Warning: Spoilers
Brilliant episode, not so much because of the medical conundrum, but the wonderful chemistry between House and Wilson. The road trip was so much fun. House was House right to the end. He had me fooled for a moment when giving the eulogy but there he was, back to 'normal'! Brilliant writing and acting.

Father

Awesome episode. House has a new case about a girl who is looking for biological parents in china. And House father is dead so his mom calls up someone in his hospital to come to the funeral even if he doesn't want to.

This episode finally restores the balance in universe. House is extremely mischievous and anyone in that "someone's" place will be extremely furious by his actions. Wilson was right he acts like a 5 year old boy.

Funeral episode was game changer. House was at his usual best. He made sure there is no laughter lost. It is not an episode where you will cry because you are touched. It is because something good happened.

What everyone was clamouring in last few episodes from the start of the season is now back on its path. We as viewers can now have a sign of relief and laugh out loud.

Thoroughly enjoyed the performance of House and rest of the team. It is a definite watch.

Once you watch the episode you will be pleasantly surprised. No more awkward or sentimental moments. All is well with house.

Don't miss.

Series 5 - better and better....
romeowhisky15 October 2008
A cracking episode.

After a dubious fourth series - season five finds a welcome return to form for one of the most enjoyable shows on television.

I was very worried with the addition of "new blood" last season but time and character development has paid of well. You don't see enough of the three previous support Doc's (will they be around much longer? - who knows) but the cast is at last working.

Can't say too much about the plot but it's one of the most enjoyable and well written since the one from the second or perhaps first series when you find out about House's leg injury.

You have to love September/October for television.

Reminds me of the "Fathers and Sons" episode of E.R.
jsulliv-217 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Really good episode. It reminds me of one of my favorite episodes of E.R., where George Clooney and Anthony Edwards take a road trip to lay Clooney's father to rest. Birthmarks is similar to this episode of ER in that it continually speaks on the philosophy of life and death. "Birthmarks" takes it even one step further. The houseisms, the rekindling of old friendships, and the intricate patient side plot, when combined with this episode's main theme of life and death, pull this story line full circle. This is the best episode of season 5 so far and it still amazes me when I see this series evolving even more each week. I honestly thought that House reached its peak with season four's two part finale in the episodes "Wilson's Heart" and "House's Head", but after seeing this episode and getting a glimpse of the new direction that this show is going to be heading in, I am optimistic that this previous theory of mine will be proved false!

This is getting old
stsorrell28 April 2023
While this was a good episode, House's infantile childlike attitude is growing tiresome. When he's in his element diagnosing patients, the show is great. But acting like a 5 year old the rest of the time is really annoying. It's enough to make me want to stop watching. What grown man acts like this??

Repeating to reach the required number of characters....
