"Peter Loves Mary" follows the lives of nightclub entertainers Peter Lindsey and Mary Wheeler (real-life married couple Peter Lind Hayes and Mary Healy) who have moved to the Connecticut suburbs from New York City. Joining their misadventures are housekeeper Wilma (Bea Benaderet, "Petticoat Junction") and children Steve (Gil Smith) and Leslie (Merry Martin). The series ran for one season on NBC.
In the first installment we are introduced to the lives of headlining nightclub entertainers Peter Lindsey and Mary Wheeler. Their upbeat housekeeper Wilma is unpacking following a move to the Connecticut suburbs that the kids, Steve and Leslie don't like. Mary and Wilma feel living in the country will benefit the children, lessening their exposure to show business habits they've acquired. While playing in the backyard the children begin enjoying their new home. City-minded Peter is strongly against the idea and commuting, however. When his business manager calls to offer the pair to be replacements on "The Jack Morgan Show", Peter is excited. Mary shoots down the job, as she doesn't want to move back and feels it would threaten the kids' well-being. Peter can't stand being away from the action and decides to take his role. As he walks out the door he runs into their tall, dashing, bachelor neighbor Bob Atwood (Glenn Langan, "The Amazing Colossal Man") offering assistance in helping them get settled. Bob is handy in fixing things around the house that Peter couldn't. Peter slinks away to the city. Before the show begins to tape Peter gets tense, comically triggering his back to seize. He recovers but while doing a comedy routine he can't get his mind off of Bob, hilariously mixing him into the act. After the show Peter and Mary have a heart-to-heart about their future.
Howard McNear (Floyd in "The Andy Griffith Show") has a brief, comical appearance as the show's producer. Close your eyes for a minute and you may think you have on "The Flintstones" as Bea Benaderet and Alan Reed who appear in the show voiced "Betty" and "Fred", respectively.
