I am glad they made this episode about essential oils and showed the thruth about this industry. They seemed fair as they showed the actual benefits of aromatherapy but also the scams that promote injesting or other uses of essential oils.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode starts off positive showing all the legit uses of essential oils and supplements. It has a few anecdotal stories of how they have helped people with special needs and others. Then it transitions to a story of how a person got very sick using an essential oil and how the cure wasn't more essential oil as her community of users suggested. Finally, a good section of this episode is dedicated to the multi-level marketing practices in this industry and how it is not a lucrative career for most who get involved with this. (Some of the companies and individuals profiled in this industry complain that this is edited to paint them in a bad light but this is for you to decide as I have done, reading their rebuttals found elsewhere on the web).

I Can't Believe How Gullible People Can Be

A 'dr' who has a blog for 5M people pushes ingesting these oils and I'm guessing we're just around the corner from listening to him with some antivaxxer nonsense. This is why most sane people laugh as soon as someone brings up MUH ESSENTIAL OILS!!

FYI- a chiropractor IS NOT a physician, and he's pushing an MLM, aka pyramid scheme.

Best part- 'we're not pretending we're something we're not!!' Lies. If you are on government assistance, DO NOT spend what little monies you have on this crackpot's scheme. You won't feel any better, and you'll be out at least $70.00.

ESSENTIAL OILS DO NOT CURE CANCER. PERIOD.

I'm certainly not arguing the possibilities of EOs on an autistic child-those on the spectrum can very well experience some type of lessening of symptoms from a sensory experience.

But I very much take issue with the statement that lavender has the same effect as lorazepam- I want a reputable study performed by board certified physicians and clinicians using blind studies, not some pseudoscience psychobabble and then 'welp it's settled science!!' No, there are no JAMA approved studies to support this.

A registered aromatherapist? Wut? So is that a 2 or 4 week course?

What's disappointing about this is, it's presented as factual with no counter-argument being presented directly opposing the ridiculous claims these lunatics are presenting as it is being stated.

The doterra SALESWOMAN claiming she has been cured of a brain tumor by essential oils???? How is this even legal?!?!

Criminy.

This is insanity personified.

Continues to Support Ableism

The episode definitely lacked depth, I feel that they scratched the surface at too many things, but did not go into depth enough. The autistic child and her mom definitely could have been left out of this episode, having that mom's mindset being out with something like this can be harmful for the disabled community. Additionally, ABA therapy can be incredibly traumatic for those receiving the therapy. If the producers had done the slightest bit of research, they would not have included this mom.

This Is a Terrible Episode

Warning: Spoilers
"Once fringe but now at the center of billion-dollar multilevel marketing companies, plant extracts can help us cope with anxiety. Are they a remedy?"

First - essential oils being the chosen product of MLM's says nothing about their efficiency. Essential oils can be beneficial, if used correctly. All throughout this documentary, they were misused/misapplied. They should never be applied to skin without a carrier oil, which was completely neglected in one of the first interviews, an entire group of women passed a bottle around and applied it directly to their skin, at the direction of a sales. Then, later on, another lady continues to apply it to her skin, after breaking out in a terrible rash. She is then angry after discovering she has an allergy to the oils, and blames them for her own stupid decision to continue re-applying (yes, it is absolutely stupid to continue using something irritating your skin to such an extreme - the photos are horrific.). Essential oils are not the problem here.
