- Patagonia stretches for more than 2,000 km, from the Río Colorado to Cape Horn. Discovered by Magellan five centuries ago, it's one of the most extreme regions on the planet. Ismaël meets some of those who have chosen to tame these wild and sometimes isolated lands.
- Beginning of the journey is the Southern Chilean Patagonia: Ismaël meets there Paulina Escobar , a fashion designer and there are many sheep, then comes Donald Mac Leod Olavaria, the shepherd : the "Peninsula " Estate has an area of 18.000 hectares: then Paulina shows Ismaël the "calafate berry (box-leaved barberry or Magellan barberry) ,they taste the fresh berry and she explains that she uses these berries to dye the wool: in a barn they see the wool of a sheep (the best quality of fibers).By boat the join the town of Puerto Natales and the go to the workshop and store of "Le Mouton vert": there female knitters are knitting sweaters, ponchos or caps.Ismaël receives a woolen cap as gift and later Paulina and Ismaël eat a "calafate " sorbet.Then Ismaël travel to the Estancia Mercedes (13.000 hectares): he is received by Rodrigo, Sebstian and Angelica Garcia who breed cows.On the morning Ismaël goes fishing with Sebastian and later with all the family a horseback riding to a nice waterfall.In the afternoon Ismaël helps to harvest vegetables in the organic garden and in the night there is "cordero al palo" typical Patagonian lamb dish.Then Ismaël has an appointment with Claudia Alejandra Cardenas near the seaside: they make a kayak trip and can see sea lions and humpback whale: they visit also the lighthouse of San Isidros.Later Ismaël is in Punta Arenas with he meets Victor Manuel Lopez Osorio Peric ,his guide, they see the statue of Magellan, then go to the cemetery where are buried people from all the countries who have sailors or traders, they see the monument of the Unknown Indian (about 16.000 Aboriginal people have been killed during the colonization of Patagonia).Then they take a great ship (Ventus Australis), they stop at the islets Tucker to see the Magellan penguins and later they go to the island of of Hornos where there is the Horn Cape:on the island an ecumenical chapel and the lighthouse (where a Chilean officer lives all the year with his wife and three children). Besides we see zooms about Pascale Taillieu , a Belgian woman who harvest "calafate" berries for making jams and liquors, about the Croatian immigrants in Punta Arenas, about Merlin Lipshitz who has come to El Chalten and is mountain guide (climbing with tourists the cliffs), about the great estates for cattle breeding in Patagonia (Carla Rohers, daughter of a cattle breeder has decided to became a "gaucha" and is one of the few women who practices rodeo (horseback riding on an untamed horse for at least 12 seconds), about the road 40 in the Argentinian Patagonia ( a Chinese cyclist , a family who travels to the next shop), about Laura Kargauer, a woman of Buenos Aires who manages the cafeteria La Leona, about the marine biologist Gabriela Garido who collects bones of fishes, whale and birds and prepares skeletons for the Museum of the Magellan Strait, about Matias Villalba who offers in his restaurant Mako lamb, Patagonian hare or wild lama meats, about Pablo Federico Morresi who grows vegetables under greenhouse and offering fresh and organic products to restaurants , about the Perito Moreno glacier which has a length of 30 kilometers and a terminus of 5 kilometers wide with an average height of 74 meters over the Argentino lake (this glacier is one of the few glacier that maintains in a state of equilibrium).—zutterjp48
