Focus Media is set to produce “Eve After The Fall,” a contemporary drama set against the backdrop of the Zagreb earthquake of 2020. The female-driven film will mark the directorial debut of well-known Croatian actor-writer Lana Barić (“Tereza37”).
Named after the titular Rodin sculpture, “Eve After The Fall” is set to star Olga Pakalović (“Halima’s Path”) as Zana, a woman who reevaluates her life after a natural disaster and attempts to start it all over again. Irena Marković is producing the film at Focus Media.
Barić previously wrote and starred in Danilo Šerbedžija’s “Tereza37” (pictured), last year’s official Croatian entry for the Academy Awards’ International Feature Film category.

Legendary Croatian-born NBA player Dražen Petrović will be portrayed in Danilo Šerbedžija’s upcoming biopic film “Higher Force – The Drazen Petrovic Story” (working title).
The film was penned by Ivan Turkovic Krnjak (“Lovebox”) and is being produced by Ljubo Zdjelarević and Ivor Šiber at Zagreb-based Kinoteka. The film will shoot next year in Croatia, Germany, and in the U.S. across Portland and New Jersey. It will be released in 2023 on the 30th anniversary of Petrović’ death.

A woman makes a dramatic life change in Tereza37, the official International Feature Film Oscar entry from Croatia. Screenwriter Lana Barić plays married Tereza (37), who has been going the traditional route to try for a baby for years without success. She considers other options when her gynecologist jokes she should try to conceive with a different partner.
Taking the suggestion seriously, Tereza starts having casual sex with strangers in an attempt to get pregnant while her husband Marko (Leon Lučev) is away — although one neighbor, Nikola (Dragan Mićanović), would like to take the relationship further.
The results veer between darkly funny, disturbing and thought-provoking in this taboo-busting drama directed by Danilo Šerbedžija, whose debut, 72 Days, was also selected to represent Croatia at the Academy Awards in 2010.
The setting is Split, a conservative environment despite being a large city. It’s an environment that can be stifling for anyone who dares question marital — and maternal — conventions.

Lana Barić joined director Danilo Šerbedžija at Deadline’s Contenders Film: International awards-season event to talk about the taboo-busting Tereza37, Croatia’s official candidate for the International Feature Oscar. The film centers on Barić’s character Tereza, a married woman who decides to sleep with multiple men while trying for a baby.
Responding to a question about the honest portrayal of the realities of women’s bodies, Barić said: “Some people say that it’s too much, because it is in your face. … It sort of bothered them. And that kind of reaction was really important for me, because if it did bother them, then it means we did provoke some kind of reaction which was genuine. For me, it was really important to show the imperfection of female bodies… It’s not popular to show blood when it’s connected to periods, or abortion or miscarriages or anything like that.

Tereza sleeps alone in bed near the opening of “Tereza37,” Danilo Serbedzija’s placidly paced Croatian drama with edges both witty and shrewdly dark. It’s an image that stands as a fitting visual foreword to Serbedzija’s film, as Tereza is often solitary at home despite being married; her husband is regularly absent, gone out to the sea frequently on his unspecified aquatic job. Then the scene’s significance grows as Tereza rolls over, revealing her blood-soaked undergarments and sheets that Serbedzija’s matter-of-fact camera captures with unsentimental directness. Soon after she cleans it all up in a series of routine, Jeanne Dielman-esque moves, we realize that Tereza just had her fourth miscarriage, but wants to keep trying to conceive in a desperate pursuit of motherhood.
