Formulaic spell rarely bewitches

Porn makers note: Since 2000 there have been three easy ways to win an AVN award. 1. Make the film longer than two hours with repeat loops of the same camera angle. 2. Always base your film on a popular movie or TV show. 3. Use HD and widescreen to razzle dazzle people with a bigger package than anything inside. I was quite surprised that there was no sex scene until after the first 15 minutes, and it was between two characters without any speaking parts to play in the movie. Mike Horner and Jenna Haze are the best partners in the film besides these two strange models that were in Darren's office. Darren and Samatha's scene was a welcome departure from reruns of what we've all seen before as often as the old sitcom on TV! Michelle Avanti as the nosy neighbor Gladys takes second place for her scene with Tabitha's black doll brought to life, "Best Newcomer" in AVN awards jargon.

Nosewigglin' witches looking better than ever

Warning: Spoilers
Will Ryder capitalizes on his own Not the Brady's XXX by going even further back into sixties television history for his next project: an adult version of Bewitched. And according to interviews, this was actually his first choice to parody over The Brady Bunch. Note that this is an 'adaption' of the original series and has nothing to do with that Nicole Kidman/Will Ferrell movie. Obviously not even the adult industry wants to burn his hands on that disaster. The film opens with some nice cheap computer animation featuring stills of the actors converted into drawings instead of the other way around. Now personally, I was always more into "I dream of Jeannie". But I guess Bewitched does have a larger cast of female parts, which is always handy for a porn, even if in the original version most of them were played by ugly old bats. In this XXX version, they are all stunner's, even if they are made up to wear some wonky wigs.

Viewers expecting lead character Samantha (Jenna Haze) to see a lot of action are in for a bit of a disappointment: like nearly every cast member she only gets one sex scene, and it's with her husband Darren (the legendary Mike Horner who is actually old enough to be Jenna's dad). I have noticed before that the current trend in adult features is to play it safe and have one sex scene per actor, with the possible addition of a solo girl scene for the hottest blonde in the cast. That distinction goes to Teagan, who plays baby Tabitha - magically turned 18 by dotty Aunt Clara (Eva Angelina) on her first birthday. Another current trend is that the character hardly ever seem to cheat on their spouses any more (which used to be what porn was all about) though in this case, nose neighbor Gladys (Michelle Avanti) does get it on with a plastic doll turned into flesh and blood by Tabitha.

Ron Jeremy cameos as Dr. Bombay and presides over a 7 way lesbian orgy in the Sahara desert (but does not join in) All seven members of his Harem are dressed in variations on Jeannie's outfit, but it's just not the same. Nina Hartley appears as Samantha's sardonic mom Endora, but alas she never joins in any of the intercourse either. I guess having one Eighties porn star (Horner) conduct in sex is enough nowadays. Actually, there are quite a few more porn actors in non sex roles: Ron Jeremy sound alike James Bartholet as Larry (okay, he doesn't really count), Dino Bravo as Abner and Jack Lawrence as a cop. Then again, nobody watches these kind of films for the men anyway. Luckilly there are a lot of women like Sasha Grey (as an unnamed model who works for Larry and Darren's ad agency), Jenna, Teagan, Michelle and Eva who all get out the goods. It is the last of these, as Aunt Clara who gets to wrap up the film in an attempt to set right her spell which turned Tabitha into an adult and she certainly throws herself into the situation with gusto.

Will Ryder certainly struck a cord with these sitcom parodies, for soon Hustler and New Sensations were copying the format and churning out one sitcom based feature after another. And because the original series live forever in syndication and on DVD, you can betcha these porn versions will be sought out by porn enthusiasts of the future for generations to come. Therefore I guess it won't be long before we get to see a similar take on I dream of Jeannie.

Much ado about nothing

This porn parody (or as I prefer to call 'em, ripoff) from the successful team of Mullen (aka Ryder) and David has the latter working on nostalgia riffs including bad wigs, Yard Sale furnishings and gaudy costuming to suggest the '60s while co-conspirator Will Ryder gets the over the top performances.

Sex scenes are perfunctory, especially a shoe-horned into the script extraneous one to feature overrated star of the day Sasha Grey. Doing a Gilda Radner-styled comedy turn, Michelle Avanti impresses in the sex department, deep throating Nate Threat and taking it in the posterior from him.

Flaunting a non-p.c. approach, Ryder is prescient a decade earlier in predicting today's blatant racism, under the guise of mocking 1960s racism, in a now-relevant scene of Avanti phoning 911 to report "a Negro is in our neighborhood", when Nate is changed from a toy doll to a living person by star Teagan's magic spell.

Big-name cast is wasted, especially a miscast Jenna Haze in the lead Elizabeth Montgomery role, while Nina Hartley has a good NonSex turn with red wig imitating Agnes Moorehead's original performance. Imitation is what makes this sort of junk annoying, as well as the stupid laugh-track.
