Nick Cassavetes and his celebrated union in the making of "The Notebook"

Making movies is all about the art of collaboration among the best people a film director can get and assemble into one particular project; the rest is up to us to watch and see a certain partnership turned out right. This short documentary shines a light on Nick Cassavetes while making the hit "The Notebook", a delightful film collaboration that felt like a beautiful experience both for cast and director but also for us viewers since Cassavetes makes of his movie set a nice gathering that truly feel connected like a big family - not to mention he directs his mom, the outstanding Gena Rowlands.

So here's Nick and Gena, Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, Joan Allen, Sam Shepard, James Marsden and James Garner telling us about their work with Nick and how he conducts every aspect of the film, shooting in location and how he directs his actors - they all congratulate him for his unorthodox yet relaxed directing methods which contributes to generate a more powerful and fun experience for everyone involved. Though miles apart in style and budget if compared to his father the late John Cassavetes, Nick seems to be an attentive and positive driven filmmaker who manages to work under the Hollywood system yet he takes from his father that indie spirit of having some simplicity in managing everything without the usual excesses of big productions.

A quite unusual behind the scenes but a very enjoyable one, that can be found as bonus material in "The Notebook" special edition DVD. Thumbs up. 8/10

Note: as seen in other source, the actual title is "All in the Family: Nick Cassavetes". This isn't much of a profile of him since it doesn't expand the talk about his other movies, just the romantic film.
