Episode 4.1
Prismark1031 March 2021
Kay Mellor's The Syndicate returns after a few years hiatus.

This series mixes social realism with an international caper that takes the winners to Monte Carlo.

The first episode is more bust. A group of young kennel workers are fighting of new zero contract hours and debt collectors. Young people looking after dogs but it will soon be all change in the workplace and not for the better.

The syndicate are pleased to win £500. That is what Frank (Neil Morrissey) the friendly shopkeeper tells one of them. Just before he flees abroad with the winning lottery ticket to the tune of £27 million.

It might have been easier for them to make a complain to the National Lottery. Rater suspicious that the shopkeeper that sold the lottery ticket to be the winner.

Still this one is a change from the normal formula of the show. I just found some of the main characters to be cardboard cutouts.

CBBC Material

The first episode was interesting albeit heavy on stereotypes and I made it through very eager to find out what happened next.

However by the end of episode 2 things had descended into an almighty farce.

I really detest tv characters whose actions go completely against normal behaviour and this show is full of it purely to push the terrible storyline on.

Such a shame as the first series was excellent and carried the drama along nicely while here it is trying to inject unnecessary and forced humour into the proceedings.

That 'Geordie' accent though...!

Disappointing
gillemorgan9 April 2021
Compared to other dramas on tv recently (Line of Duty and Unforgotten specifically) The Syndicate is very poor. The actors are doing their best but the quality of the plot and production is pretty dire. Sorry Kay, you've had a good run but you need to up your game now...

Terrible story line

Warning: Spoilers
Very poor and disappointing compared to previous Syndicate series's. The plot is so stupid its laughable. Stolen lottery ticket and 4 idiots running around Monaco trying to find the guilty party. Just let the police deal with it! This would never happen in real life. Episode 4, hoping it will improve but still no sign of what it would be like to have £27million and what you'd do with it which is what most people want to see (flash cars, big houses etc).

Ignore the naysayers, it's a bit of fun

Warning: Spoilers
The premise is that Frank, who looks after the lottery machine in his fiancé's shop, passed through the winning ticket but lied to the ticket holder, giving them £500 and pretending that was the prize whilst claiming the jackpot himself. Sounds credible. He fakes his own suicide and travels abroad. Again credible but fell apart immediately. The rightful ticket holders figure out they were swindled and contacted the lottery. Still credible. And the lottery begins an investigation. Meanwhile we get to know about the characters as each episode continues akin to the formula. What we learn is they're the usual idiots. Faffing about working out what their numbers were. Getting excited over a few pounds. And the drama leading up to working out they'd got all 7 numbers was a bit mind numbing. But It's OK. It does feel a bit immature compared to prior series so you'd be forgiven for thinking its a CBBC drama. But in the end it's about dreaming of winning the lottery and moving to Monaco which is a bit of fun in itself.

Actually can't believe how bad this is
patrickmartland-4310430 March 2021
I've seen a lot of tv drama, but this is honestly by far one of the worst episodes ever.

The terrible script is only supported by a ridiculous plot line, the actors tried but overall it's just a laughable production.

I can't be bothered leaving a full review as I've just wasted an hour watching this episode, but in short just don't waste your time.

It's okay

I saw the season called All or Nothing first, which I really liked, so that kind of spoiled me for other seasons. I wasn't all that interested in the story or the characters of this season, but I really liked every single actor, so that kind of pulled me through. 6.5 stars.

Awful.
grahamstewart2413 April 2021
This is simply awful. Not only is the storyline dreadful, unrealistic and frankly annoying but the acting is woeful. To be fair to the actors I don't think they could have done much better with the woeful script. Every annoying character manages to be be idiotic, inept and a poor stereotype all at once. Avoid.

Review for Season 4. Best Way to Watch It, Watch Ep1 and Final Episode.
Scotslad_0073 November 2021
A great series. This got the lowest ratings on IMDB, knowing that I decided to go with watching episode 1 and skipping to the final episode, the rest is noise. I didn't regret the choice, which is why I gave this a 7, closer to an 8. You don't miss any key plot lines you save yourself a lot of slow burn writing.

Great Season!

Utter drivel
kenners-8462913 May 2021
What a disappointment. I quite enjoyed the previous series of The Syndicate, but this was akin to a CBBC drama. The characters were unlikeable; the plot was outrageous; and the script left a lot to be desired. It's as if Kay Mellor got bored in lockdown, drank several bottles of wine and wrote whatever popped into her head. Don't waste your time on this. It's convoluted, tedious and ridiculous!

Utter rubbish
brookeward-1608122 November 2022
I don't know where to begin with this review. Firstly, there is absolutely no need for 6 episodes, most of it was absolutely pointless and it went on for way too long. Stiff acting and so far fetched. I will never get Emily Heads Geordie accent out of my mind again. It was beyond me how the people who ran the lottery just believed the post office teller that their CCTV was broke, or that her husband (guy who claimed the ticket was his) had just up-sticks and went on holiday, immediately after there was a fraudulent claim. Honestly I could go on, this is just a small snippet of the absolute crap I've watched. I watched it all on a very gloomy, hungover Sunday... I should have just stayed asleep lol!

Season 4 is so bad it's good
Pigeon42014 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I am convinced Season 4 of this show had to be some sort of joke or parody because I'm struggling to understand how this was Okay-ed by anyone in the BBC. That's not to say that I didn't enjoy it; I did, but perhaps for all the wrong reasons! This is the type of show you want to watch when you're drunk playing a drinking game or you've smoked a zoot and wanna watch some bad TV.

The worst/funniest character of this season was by far Gemma. Her entire character can be summarised with: she's fat, she enjoys eating and wants to assassinate her dad. Nope, I didn't make the last part up. Gemma received very little character development or story throughout the whole series. She probably has the least screen time and the fewest lines of the syndicate, making it all the more jarring when she makes references to wanting to murder her father.

In the first episode, when the main characters were discussing what they would do if they won the lottery, Gemma told her friends that she'd order a hit on her dad. Her friends kind of just laugh it off awkwardly and it's never mentioned again. I managed to convince myself that I had hallucinated that scene (because it was so ridiculous) and forgot about it.

In the fifth episode I was abruptly reminded of Gemma's mission to murder her father. She walks into a gun shop in Monaco and asks the owner if the pistol she's looking at could kill someone. She then asks if she could bring it onto a plane. The owner is of course alarmed and secretly calls the police, who escort a shocked Gemma away. How could any human being not realise that walking into a gun shop and asking those questions would look incredibly dodgy???

In the final episode when the media is asking the syndicate what they'll do with their winnings, Gemma tells the cameras that she was considering ordering a hit on her dad but then decided not to in the end. Of course nobody knows how to react because who in their right mind says stuff like that in public? Everyone kind of just awkwardly laughs.

The final scene is one of happiness. Everybody is celebrating their lottery win with the media and uplifting music is playing. The music continues to play, and the scene abruptly cuts to Gemma's father being hit by a car. Not only was this scene transition comedy gold, but it led to the reveal that Gemma's grandmother ordered the hit on Gemma's dad! Still, the show ended with a "happy ending".

While watching this I felt like Kay Mellor didn't consider the fact that Gemma's father being found dead shortly after she was seen on TV expressing that she wanted him to be assassinated would seriously implicate Gemma and that people would think she did it.

The whole assassination revenge subplot was ridiculous and melodramatic. It wasn't even explained WHY Gemma wanted her dad to be assassinated until the final episode, and even then I struggle to believe her motivation because that's not how actual young women act in real life.

Gemma's entire character was absurd. She didn't act like how real human beings act. Even a person with a learning difficulty or someone who's on the autism spectrum would know not to start blabbing to the media and your friends about how you want your dad to be assassinated. Still, her character gave me many hearty laughs.
