The exchange between Ted and Beard: "Hey, Coach, can I get real a second? Forget my meal a second?", "Put down your beer and tell your buddy how you feel a second?" is adapted from "Right Hand Man" from the musical Hamilton, where George Washington sings: "Can I be real a second? For just a millisecond? Let down my guard and tell the people how I feel a second?"
Ted Lasso discusses the 1999 film Magnolia (1999) calling it Paul Thomas Anderson's opus. In a later scene, Aimee Mann's song 'Wise Up', which was featured in an important scene in Magnolia, is heard.
As Ted (Jason Sudeikis) walks into Rebecca's office, everyone shouts "Ted!", which is followed by a question to Ted and his witty reply. This is a reference to a running gag involving the character Norm on Cheers (1982), who is played by Sudeikis' uncle, George Wendt.
The line "There I was, wishing and hoping for a friggin' tie, and now the karma police are making good on showing me what I get when I mess with them." refers to Radiohead's "Karma Police", and its chorus "This is what you get when you mess with us."
