The scene where Brian and Stewie smash the record is a parody of the film Office Space (1999) where 3 co-workers destroy a printer that continuously malfunctions.
According to the DVD commentary: The song originally pitched for this story was "The Streak" by Ray Stevens. Because they could not get the rights to it, the writers needed "another stupid song." Without hesitation writer and executive producer Danny Smith said, "Oh, you need a stupid song, 'Surfin' Bird' by The Trashmen."
Posters on the wall inside the record store include the cover art of the albums 'In Utero' by Nirvana, 'Automatic For the People' by R.E.M. and 'Dark Side of the Moon' by Pink Floyd.
The title is based on the 1960's fantasy sitcom I Dream of Jeannie (1965) about an astronaut who finds a mischievous female genie and starred Larry Hagman and Barbara Eden.
The scene where Peter interrupts G.W. Bush by bringing out Jesus to debunk him and then proclaims: "Boy! Wouldn't it be nice if life were like this." Is a recreation of a scene in Annie Hall (1977) where Woody Allen brings out the author, Marshall McLuhan, to debunk a critic.
Marshall McLuhan : I heard what you were saying! You know nothing of my work! You mean my whole fallacy is wrong. How you got to teach a course in anything is totally amazing!
Alvy Singer, (Woodie Allen) : Boy, if life were only like this.
