Henry James' novels and short stories have always been in vogue for adaptations, and the series 'Affairs of the Heart' was no exception, focusing on a major female character in each story and presenting a version for television lasting approximately fifty minutes.
The first to be broadcast - although, oddly, it appears in the season 2 DVD, was 'Emma', a version of 'Lord Beaupre' starring Cheryl Campbell, Jeremy Clyde, and David Yelland. It is a tale of arranged engagements and family machinations - like many of James' tales, it presents the upper middle and upper classes and delivers a stinging rebuke on the way they choose to live.
However, well played though this instalment of the series is, it isn't one which really draws in the viewer. Perhaps the story is just too commonplace and a tale of drawing rooms and romantic entanglements needs to be something more. However, Campbell is charming and as her two suitors, Clyde and Yelland are both very much the perfect gentlemen.
