I caught a couple of episodes of "My Super Sweet 16 Presents: Exiled" the other day, and I think that the premise of the show is fantastic and teaches those spoiled, bratty kids life lessons that they may never otherwise learn. The concept is simple enough:
1.) take them away from their comfort zone and away from anyone they know -- 2.) take away their creature comforts -- 3.) have them do things they would otherwise NEVER do in a place, and situation that is totally foreign to them
It's interesting to see how these kids deal with the situation. First there is denial that they are going to have go through with it. Then, when they get where they are going, they try to exercise some control by refusing to conform or adapt to the situation. Once they figure out they are neck deep in it and there is no escape, then comes acceptance, and eventually, adaptation. It's too bad the experience only lasts one week because I think these kids would benefit more from it if they stayed a bit longer.
I would venture to guess that the host families also benefit from it - even $1000 in the US would be a small fortune to a family in a country where the average annual household income is probably less than $10K per year.
I would like to see another spin-off of this show where the host family "brother/sister" gets to spend a week in the States with their Super-Sweet 16 counterpart living in the lap of opulence and luxury.
I don't normally care much for "reality" TV, but I highly recommend catching a few episodes of this show - the entertainment value is VERY high.
