- After his college graduation, Joe Kimbreau is faced with a pivotal decision that steers his life down three drastically different paths.
- In 2011, Joe Kimbraugh is graduating from Syracuse University. Late to the ceremony, he rushes into the stadium where his on-again-off-again girlfriend Jenny Banks is giving the valedictory speech before the assembled graduates. Joe bumps into a woman named Amy Kindelan and they get to talking. Joe, a music major, explains that he wants to be a musician, but that he's being pressured to go into the family business of policing. Amy explains her own ambitions to go into politics. After the ceremony, Jenny invites Joe to go away with her for the weekend, but he demurs, saying that he might spend time with his family. Joe talks with his lifelong friend Eric Payne, a fellow SU alum. Eric chides Joe for being indecisive and urges him to make a decision. Joe ponders one of three choices: go with his mother and family, head off with Jenny, or ask out Amy.
Ten years later, three versions of Joe's life play out. In the first timeline, Joe and Jenny are married. They have a child, Christopher, with a serious medical condition, and Joe works as a nurse. At work, Congressman Bobby Diaz is rushed in, the victim of an attempted assassination. Joe helps save his life. At home, Jenny, who works as a paralegal, criticizes Joe for being too emotionally closed off. This emotional distance has contributed to the decay of their marriage. The two are nearing the end of a sixth month trial separation. Believing their marriage is irreparably damages, Jenny gives Joe divorce papers, but he pledges to win her back. Joe has dinner with Eric and his wife Amy, both of whom try to find ways for him to help repair his marriage. As Joe prepares for his ten year college reunion, his son Christopher expresses hope that his parents will reconcile. At the reunion, Joe apologizes to Jenny and more fully shares his feelings with her. The two have fun, drinking and dancing. They go back to their apartment and check on Christopher. Joe invites Jenny to stay, but she says she should leave. As she goes to do so, Joe kisses her.
In the second timeline, Joe is married to Amy and is a wealthy and famous pop-rock musician. Amy works for Congressman Diaz, whose planned rally had to be moved a few days to accommodate one of Joe's concerts in New York City, thus inadvertently sparing him from the assassination attempt. Eric encourages a reluctant Joe to sing a song at their upcoming college reunion. Amy and Joe discover that she is pregnant with twins. Having already suffered a series of miscarriages, Amy asks Joe to keep the pregnancy secret for a while, but he has already told his mother. Amy finds out that Congressman Diaz has been diagnosed with Parkinson's and is considering dropping out of the race. Amy suffers a miscarriage. Diaz decides to drop out of the race and asks Amy to take his place on the ballot. The prospect doesn't enthuse Joe, who wants to try again to have kids. When Amy asks if he would be okay if they never had kids, Joe refuses to answer. Joe attends to the reunion alone and plays his song. Afterwards he runs in Jenny and the two begin talking about their lives. Jenny, who recently made partner at her law firm, reveals that she had asked Joe to go away with her after graduation because she had something important to tell him: she was pregnant. Jenny gave the baby up for adoption. Joe, stunned that he has a son, vows to find him.
In the third timeline, Joe is a police officer like his deceased father and his Uncle Frank. While working a rally for Congressman Diaz, Joe sees a man pull a gun and shoots him. Joe's family repeatedly chides the perennial bachelor to try and find a girl, even floating the idea that he might reconnect with college girlfriend Jenny, who they assume with be attending the upcoming reunion. Frank shows Joe pictures that they took from the phone of the gunman, who had been stalking Diaz for some time. In one of them, Joe sees Amy, who he recognizes from years ago. He goes to the campaign headquarters to have her look at photos and see if she sees anything important. She tells Joe that he seems familiar and he tells her that they met at Graduation. When he learns that she's reluctant to go to the reunion because people will ask her relationship questions he offers to accompany her. They have a good time at the reunion. Towards the end, they run into Jenny and Joe talks with her. She tells him that she's now an assistant DA and introduces him to her son, now named Lucas. She doesn't tell Joe that the boy is his son too.
