Great acting from Chloe delivered through decent dramatic scenes, all but buried beneath the nonsensical premise
kuarinofu20 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The enormous potential was unfortunately buried under the lack of plot development in this film.

The whole androids tie-in, as well as their appearance and existence in general, does not work at all. They have no motives, we know nothing about them, so it is impossible to understand the level of threat posed by them.

That said, in the movie itself, the characters don't seem to be aware that the apocalypse is happening either. Most of the characters, including the supporting cast, do everything as casually as possible and look slightly annoyed rather than in constant danger.

Some major plot twists don't make sense at all, like the androids infiltrating the city. We were purposely shown a long scene of inspection aimed at avoiding such situations, and then it just happens.

Thus, in fact, we got a world of modernity in which androids, completely indistinguishable from humans, live in a way that has no effect on the ordinary life of humans. At the same time, our technology does not seem to have developed at all in any area other than the creation of high-tech robots, which at some point went crazy. At the same time, there is no coordination in terms of defense, it is not clear what is happening to the world around us, and there is no element of survival since food and water are plentiful. Everyone is just slowly going about their business.

I liked the teen pregnancy drama elements, the relationships, and the first part of the ending, which was soon completely undone by its second part. Chloe played the first part of the ending perfectly, then we saw her completely different as if nothing had happened, she just let go of the most important person in her life and went on about her business, it makes no sense.

I really wish Chloe had been given more opportunities to play in good movies, as she really shined here. Otherwise, the movie is too raw, which is very noticeable in a number of inconsistent scenes and overdubbed lines. Maybe they had to make some major changes in the plot at the last minute.

There is a lot to look at in the film, but literally, the central plot point is completely unexplored. The meaning of the title is also absolutely unclear to me. It is difficult to recommend this film.

Agree with other reviews-Chloe Moritz deserves better roles
babycakes-4526918 December 2021
I have to agree with the other reviews, Chloe Grace Moritz is an amazing actress but she keeps getting parts in similar type movies and it's holding her back. If her agent is listening...she deserves better roles.

Love will Kill us
nogodnomasters2 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Sam (Algee Smith) and Gee (Chloë Grace Moretz) managed to survive the android apocalypse. Gee is pregnant and took the test three times which indicates she really didn't want to be pregnant. They are trying to travel from New York to Boston Harbor through no man's land and catch a boat to Korea which for some strange reason is a safe zone and would make them suspect under normal circumstances. The androids want to wipe out human life except for maybe the Koreans?

We have seen some good and iconic films of man vs machine. This was not one of them. The plot needed some more explanation or at least give us some roving Mad Max gangs if you don't plan on making sense.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

Who's booking Chloe's Gigs for her?
Rob-O-Cop18 December 2021
She's a fantastic actress yet it's bomb after bomb after bomb for her and she's the only good thing in them.

Chloe, please fire your agent and come back to us with some quality films, we know you're a talented actress and we all love to watch you do your work, but this is straining it for us.

This was a stinker...

Warning: Spoilers
Now, the synopsis for the 2021 sci-fi thriller "Mother/Android" actually sounded interesting, and I must admit that with Chloë Grace Moretz on the cast list, then I would be almost certainly guaranteed a properly entertaining movie.

So I sat down to watch this movie from writer and director Mattson Tomlin without actually having heard about it prior to watching it, so I wasn't really sure what to expect here.

And talk about a swing and a miss of a movie. What sounded interesting enough on paper and in synopsis didn't translate well into a properly entertaining or enjoyable movie. I have to say that I feel like I was watching a super diluted and watered down version of the Skynet war on humanity as seen in "The Terminator" franchise. Except writer and director Mattson Tomlin didn't even deliver anything that reached aforementioned franchise to the ankles.

The storyline was boring and mundane, and there just simply wasn't enough of contents to the storyline to make the movie bearable to watch. In fact, I actually dozed off about halfway through the ordeal. And the pacing of the narrative in "Mother/Android" just lacked speed and intensity. So you are in for somewhat of a snoozefest here.

Visually then "Mother/Android" was actually okay. Not a movie that was using an abundance of special effects and CGI, but whatever was used was actually functioning quite well.

I found "Mother/Android" to be a disappointment, and it is not a movie that I would recommend you waste your time, money or effort on.

My rating of writer and director Mattson Tomlin's 2021 movie "Mother/Android" lands on a generous three out of ten stars.

The Future Is Boring
Tweetienator20 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Chloë Grace Moretz is a fine actress, unfortunately she does not get good roles in good movies that much lately. The line of mediocre to bad movies grows with every year passed (The 5th Wave, Suspiria, Shadow in the Cloud, Brain on Fire) - her performance is always solid to good and sometimes really good, but the movies are not. Whereas one could at least argue that Shadow in the Cloud was well played by her and got an experimental story line, Mother/Android is just a ripp-off of ideas from other movies of the genre, with a rather limited budget and a very boring execution. Like the zombie genre the post-apocalyptic genre drowns in average and bad productions directed and produced by wanna-be movie makers. This is just bad and plain boring filled with every cliche imaginable of the genre and zeitgeist. Exact rate: 2 + 1 bonus point for Chloë Grace Moretz performance.

Glad I watched till the end.
henk-811-25873710 January 2022
Yes, this was a slow movie and I watched it in two sessions. Still, the last half hour was thrilling and had an unexpected turn. It stuck with me after it ended and that's a good thing to me.

excruciatingly slow drama
Horror_Flick_Fanatic19 December 2021
Terrible movie, terrible screenplay excruciatingly slow and a movie with no point. Come on! Chloe, You're way better than this! You have too much talent for this kind of garbage. You really should be making much higher quality, higher caliber films. Please find someone to steer you in the right direction towards legitimate good screenplays.

Lacks tension and suspense
Gordon-1110 January 2022
"Mother/Android" is a post apocalyptic science fiction film, but it manages to be quite slow and uneventful. It lacks tension and suspense. I was rather bored by it.

A menagerie of classic Sci Fi themes
Jack_C_19 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
1. Android uprising, a la Terminator lite, check.

2. Running through a post apocalyptic world with a pregnant woman looking for a boat, a la Children of Men, check.

3. An EMP that only works once even though it is possible to stock multiple bombs, check.

4. D*ckish soldiers abuse their power and only use machine guns despite being part of the most powerful military in the world, check.

Chloe more than carries this film with sheer talent and grace despite a lack of chemistry between her and Algee. A somewhat predictable script doesn't help. Her acting is top notch. It's just too bad she is surrounded by wooden spoons.

Chloe Tries
billcr1231 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Chloe Grace Moretz tries her best to save Mother Android but she should have read the script before taking the role. A pregnant woman, Chloe, must survive in a world of an AI robot revolt. She and her boyfriend travel the desolate landscape while being attacked by unhappy man made machines. For some unknown reason, they need to make it to Boston. The storyline is horrible with a ridiculous ending. Watch The Children of Men instead.

Them doggone kids
stevenswig21 December 2021
They should find a way to market this kind of scifi because it seems the title attracts the wrong audience, and the wrong audience gives it low scores. You tell people that this movie is by the guy who made an action packed superhero movie, so kids watch it expecting more of the same.

The movie had great atmosphere, good acting, and a good story. If you think all scifi should be like a marvel movie, keep away from this. There's nothing wrong with marvel movies, and there's nothing wrong with this.

It's not about the androids.
jshanafelt20 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I think this film gets so many low ratings, because it's expected to be about androids and it's not.

I'm not saying there aren't short comings in the realm of "these are the things that make a *good* film" because there are. The script is a little weak in parts but it's not that bad. Theres some plot holes and weird movie logic. There's not a lot of development about the androids as to why they're acting like they are, where they come from and how.

But, it's not about the androids.

In similar films, there's some bad ass character wanting to know how everything happened. They're former military, cops, scientists, etc. In this movie, they are regular people who just found out they made a baby and the world ended.

The film is about Georgia.

The casting of Georgia and Sam was a great move. There is some real chemistry between the characters that works well on screen. It's easy to believe they love each other.

It's refreshing to see the main character and "hero" be an average woman, in these kinds of films.

This movie drew me in pretty quickly with some subtle foreshadowing in the first few scenes. This is not a high action film, it is a slow burn.

There is very little CGI and Special FX and what is there, is pretty well done. Visually the film isn't ground breaking but it's a good aesthetic that works.

You can very clearly see where the writer draws inspiration from: iRobot, AI, Terminator, and arguably Wayward Pines. Where the writer deviates from the troupes though, is by not making it about the robots.

Is the film super impressive or overly unique? No. It's not the greatest film ever made - but it's also not that bad. I found the ending heart wrenching and appreciated that not everything was a pretty bow.

Pointless slog
rmmil19 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Wow, you can really tell a pandemic is going on with films nowadays. This was just relentlessly depressing. That's "okay" in film, but not if there's no other point to it. Please tell me, anyone, why did film exist other than to watch Chloe Grace Moretz cry a lot?

First of all, the title of the film was a miss. Could they just not think of anything else? Second, as is often the case in films of this type, there is little explanation as to "why" it's all happening. "Androids don't like people anymore." Got it.

But the real problem with this film was the pacing. The glacial, quicksand pacing. There were about 5 endings to this film, each a long shot of people just staring. The climax of the action happens with 15 minutes left, so we literally get 15 minutes of Chloe staring into the distance wondering what her kid's life would have been like. It's the entire end of the film, what were they thinking?!

Awful script, awful writing. What a waste!

Pointless
aarpcats23 February 2022
Humans play God and make androids. The androids turn on humans and try to destroy them. What began as Frankenstein is in this film a feminist fable about a pregnant mother determined to save her baby and her man from the android apocalypse.

Although the movie has some anxiety provoking moments, it doesn't sustain the tension in the way a good horror or science fiction movie needs. The pace of the first three quarters of the film devolves into a romantic soap opera at the end of the film.

Hint: Buffy has a similar plot where she fights against android/monster Adam during a season of the series. She vanquishes Adam at the end of the season with the help of her friends. The point of the season is that human connections sustain us, even when we fight monsters.

The point of this movie seems to be that human connections make us weaker and miserable, but we fight with them because we can't escape the monster.

What's the difference? Good writing. Buffy has a character arc. No one in this movie does. Even selfless acts are punished by more pain. Who wants to see that plot?

Chloe needs a new agent so that she doesn't have to make craptastic movies like this one. She is better than this.

Don´t waste your precious time!
frank-liesenborgs17 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"Mother/Android" opens with a Christmas party, where Georgia (played by Chloë Grace Moretz) finds out that she is pregnant. But she's not even sure if she wants a baby or to stay in a relationship with Sam (played by Algee Smith). And then immediately all hell breaks loose. Chaos starts and the androids turn on the human race so suddenly, without any warning. To cut to the chase, this movie is a survival story of a young couple. We are now in a post-apocalyptic world and I got kind of lost in the storyline. The plot and where the story is going is still not clear to me. The one thing that stood out was the acting performances of Chloë Grace Moretz (Georgia). Algee Smith´s acting was watchable but Chloë really stood out. Overall with a run-time of almost two hours, it was a very boring movie with a few moments where all came to live and where you could feel the tension. But too less and too late. Felt like four hours watching and was happy when the movie was finished. And I did not like the ending. If you have a choice, forget this movie. Don´t waste your precious time.

It felt like a poor man's clone of Shadow in the Cloud
siderite10 January 2022
So Chloe did this film called Shadow in the Cloud a year before this one. It features a woman with a small baby, trying to survive things that are trying to kill her in a misogynistic world while ineffectually protected by a weak man. In the end she rises to the occasion, saving her child. This film is basically the same, only seemingly on a much smaller budget and really falling flat. Instead of gremlins in a plane it's androids in a forest. Instead of manly but stupid flyboys she gets manly but stupid army guys. Similarities aside, I liked Shadow in the Cloud, yet I was completely unimpressed and bored with this film. And what the hell is that title? Couldn't they think of something better?

Bottom line: the movie feels amateurish and under budget, like a student film. The effects are few and far between, while the story is full of holes and completely uninspiring.

I truly don't understand the negative reviews.
kaylee-nelson2118 December 2021
Okay yes, this is a story setting that has been used time and time again. We've seen the apocalypse/survival thing in so many movies and tv shows over the years. BUT, that being said, I thought this was a pretty good movie. Was it a 10/10? No, I wouldn't say that. It wasn't even close to being on the same level of say, A Quiet Place. But I thought it was good. I would describe it as like, A Quiet Place's cousin that lives out of state or something. I thought everyone's acting was solid, the storyline had some loopholes but nothing that made me want to completely stop watching. I enjoyed it! Watch for yourself and give it a chance, you might be pleasantly surprised!

Dull movie...really dull. Zzzzzzz
hunkazine18 December 2021
I really like a good android versus humans story. This is not one of them. The beginning is dull, the middle is dull, the ending is almost laughably silly. Yes, go watch The Terminator again. I am going to do just that. I won't be back.

6.5/10 not an exceptional story but you want to keep watching
Hellooo123432110 January 2022
The acting is on point, Chloë Grace Moretz is such a great actress. There is also action in it this makes it a little bit more exciting to watch further even though at times the movie is slow. There is a clear beginning end goal, so that is why you want to see this movie until the end. Overall score 6.5/10. Hoping for a sequel.

This felt like an overlong TV series episode. Wait, hmmm... 🤔
Top_Dawg_Critic26 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Writer, producer and director Mattson Tomlin's experience is short films, and you can tell after seeing this one. The 110 min runtime felt much longer with all the filler, little substance, and slow pacing. However, even though there's nothing groundbreaking in his story, it was still told in a suspense-filled way that it held my attention, and the added twist was actually brilliant and a refreshing change in the otherwise dragged-out forest camping excursion. Tomlin's directing, the spot-on score, and the excellent cinematography, successfully created a chilling atmosphere that felt eerily realistic. I only wish it had more substance, more apocalyptic action, more thrills, and less depressing melodramatics. I feel this concept and the way it was filmed, and the excellent performance by Moretz, could be a successful mini-series. Imagine the story continuing in Korea and it's not what you expected, and only then does the film's title start to make sense. Hulu, are you listening? I feel the critics also went a little hard on this one; considering the clearly low budget used extremely well, and the eerie feel Tomlin created, along with Moretz's stellar performance, this is deserving nothing less than my well deserved 7/10, but could've easily been at least an 8 and above with simple proper changes.

broken by the last act
SnoopyStyle15 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Georgia (Chloë Grace Moretz) is concerned about her unexpected pregnancy. Mostly, she's concerned about her boyfriend Sam (Algee Smith). Then the robot apocalypse happens.

This is a Hulu film. I actually really like the first half of the movie. The film has reduced the very familiar post-apocalyptic film to a relationship film. With the introduction of Arthur, the film threatens to take a big swing and it does exactly that. I completely foresaw the twist but that's fine. The problem is the execution of the twist. It's highly unlikely for so many reasons. Firstly, there is no way that they could have gotten in without being found out. Secondly, one would think that the robots would have some EMP weapons or nukes themselves by that time. Thirdly, why not escape to Europe instead of Asia which is on the other side of the world? Better yet, why not travel to Seattle in order to escape to Korea? Finally, is the film trying to make a point about the recent border issue in America? If so, it does it in the most clunky way possible. Add that all together, the last act is a mess of false notes and it breaks an otherwise interesting take on the familiar.

Who is writing the reviews????
rzyzpgc24 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I can't understand how awful movies get great reviews and how great movies get bad reviews?? This was a great movie! The beginning is a little disjointed but it does clue you into the fact of what is going on and what happens next even though you don't find out why it happens. The actors are giving great performances and in the end it pretty sad and a very realistic approach to a thriller/horror futuristic movie.

A Very Good Intelligent Movie
marcusdavis407 January 2022
Whats with all the negative reviews ? I thought this movie was very good .It was intelligent and Chloe Grace Moretz is such a good actress with a very strong body of work behind her . This is not a bubble gum movie with alot of shotem ups that only appeals to the subpar IQ types. I very much liked this movie. Chloe Grace Moretz definetly displays her acting chops in this.

Uninteresting old story
supermellowcali17 December 2021
I don't think this movie was as bad as other reviewers said, but definitely nothing new and clearly there was a lack of thought about some things that could have been much better. I think it was saved by chloe's acting but the basic idea of human-like robots that turn against their masters and murder is unsophisticated in itself, and doesn't work as a story the way it did in the 50s- before there had been time for anyone to think it through. Reminds me of an Orson Welles movie... innovative at the time but silly today.
