- A neglected teen takes refuge in the dreams that used to haunt her and orchestrates a shocking plan to prove her worth to her disapproving parents.
- Pauline, has a sister, Grace, who suffers from cystic fibrosis and occupies most of her parents' attention. Pauline is fascinated by surgery. This not only gives her nightmares, but also disturbs her mom and dad. However, compelled by a life with a suffering sister, she can't let go of this preoccupation, despite her fear. As her home life deteriorates, Pauline's grades drop and her mother becomes emotionally distant. She has no one to go to and her mental state veers far away from sanity until her nightmares no longer frighten her and surgery becomes more than an intense fascination, but perhaps a future and a way of winning her parents' attention and love. Pauline no longer looks at her sister as a human, but as an opportunity to steal back the devotion of her parents. Aware that Grace will one day need a lung transplant because of her condition, Pauline is convinced she can perform the operation herself. The story explores a strained relationship between a mother and daughter. It is a story of neglect, obsession, jealousy and loneliness told through a blurring of suburbia and terror.
