Quotes

  • Dr. Howard : Looks like you recently underwent a full preventative screening here. Yeah, we got physical, cognitive and full labs. Don't usually do the cognitive without a request.

Dan Chase : Yeah, I requested it.

Dr. Howard : Oh, okay. Um... are you experiencing any symptoms?

Dan Chase : Mm... isn't that the nature of cognitive impairments that you aren't cognizant of them?

    Dr. Howard : Not always.

Dan Chase : [exhales]  Well not never, either. No, I've not been experiencing any symptoms.

  • Dr. Howard : How are you feeling this after...?

Dan Chase : Dave and Carol.

Dr. Howard : Who are... ? Ok, ok. I get it. Dave and Carol are your dogs. I got a little confused for a second there.

Dan Chase : Why? Because they have names?

Dr. Howard : Well, because they have people's names. Those are... those are people's names.

Dan Chase : Not in this case.

  • Harold Harper : Hello, this Harold Harper. Listen, there are a couple of things that we need to get clear. First, I am not running this op. I was asked in strictly to consult. No one here knows that I'm speaking with you right now. There's a good chance I am violating several laws by doing so, which should earn me a little latitude. Does it?

    Dan Chase : No.

Harold Harper : All right. The second thing, then, is that I need you to go to your car. Right now. I need to explain to you how I just called you on a phone that you believed was clean and untraceable.

Truck Stop Waitress : You haven't paid yet.

Harold Harper : When you get to the car, take a look underneath. Passenger side, rear wheel well. Apparently, we can match the transponder's location to the location of the phone moving with it, and then reverse engineer the number. That one surprised me. I didn't know that was a thing we could do. I tell you this partly to remind you that you have no idea how different the game is than the last time you played it. And partly because you've got about three minutes before they're on top of you. I'm not looking at the transponder feed, so let me know when you're driving. We can talk further.

  • Dan Chase : Is he there?

Raymond Waters : Harper. It's for you.

    Harold Harper : [bewildered]  Yeah?

Dan Chase : That's three. Any more you send at me, I'm sending back in bags. Anyone you send at my kid, I'm sending back in pieces. Do you recognize me now?

    [call disconnects]

Raymond Waters : Who the hell is this guy? Sir, what am I dealing with here?

  • Officer Richmond : You received any kind of threats or anything lately?

Dan Chase : No, no, I'm retired, so...

Officer Stevenson : What'd you do before you retired, if you don't mind me asking?

Dan Chase : Oh, real estate, mostly, uh... down in Manhattan. I kept the family up here, though. I never had any kind of problem. Figured we were far enough away from the city to be free from all that.

Officer Stevenson : Yeah, well, you'd be surprised. Happens everywhere these days. The silencer that's weird, though. That you don't usually see.

    Dan Chase : Oh?

Officer Stevenson : But then again, you had that guy last week that held up a mini-mart in Lyndon with an...

Officer Richmond , Officer Stevenson : [unison]  AK-47.

    Dan Chase : Ah.

Officer Stevenson : So I shouldn't be surprised by much of anything anymore.

    Dan Chase : Yeah.

  • Angela Adams : [voice over, woman on phone]  When I was a little girl, I imagined there was nothing you were afraid of.

Angela Adams : [Dan sighs]  You were indestructible. There was no one and nothing that could ever hurt you. There was no one and nothing that you would ever let hurt me.

Angela Adams : [Dan groans]  When I was a little girl, you were a king. And everything I knew was your kingdom. I guess what I'm asking is where did that guy go?

Dan Chase : [groans]  Well, I hate to break this to you, but you weren't very bright as a kid, Emily. I could've told you anything and you would've bought it.

Angela Adams : Oh, I think we both know that isn't true.

Dan Chase : Uh... and what makes you think that I wasn't afraid of anything when you were a little girl? I was afraid of everything that wasn't nailed down when you were a little girl. I just got good at lying to you about it.

Angela Adams : Yes, you did.

    [Dan chuckles]

Angela Adams : Until recently. I've noticed. You don't sound like yourself. You're preoccupied when we're talking. You're not sleeping. I'm just asking you what's the difference now.

Dan Chase : [resigned uncertainty]  I don't know. Something, you know, just off.

    [Dan exhales]

Angela Adams : Listen, if this is about what I think it's about, then I understand why it frightens you. But I think you're fine. Unless there's something you're not telling me. Is there something you're not telling me?

Dan Chase : [dodges query]  Oh, sorry. No... no... of course not. Uh... I got to run, sweetie. I'll call you when I can.

    Angela Adams : Okay.

Dan Chase : Okay. Bye-bye, love you.

Angela Adams : Bye. I love you.

Dan Chase : [sniffs]  Uh... she's pretty sure everything's fine.

    Dan Chase : [grunts]  Huh.

[tosses burner phone in microwave and starts microwave]

Dan Chase : [whistles for dogs]  Well let's go.

    [exits]

  • [Dan calling early in the morning from his SUV after the break-in/assassination attempt]

Angela Adams : [line ringing, Emily answers groggily]  Hello?

Dan Chase : Hey, kid, it's me. Sorry to be calling you at this hour.

    [sighs]

Dan Chase : Uh, they found me.

    Angela Adams : [perplexed]  What?

    Dan Chase : Yeah.

Angela Adams : Are you okay?

Dan Chase : Yeah, I'm fine. The dogs are fine. But if they found me at the house, I can't go back.

Angela Adams : Are you sure it was... it was them?

Dan Chase : [sighs]  Yeah, I'm sure.

Angela Adams : Just because after all this time, you know, it seems pretty unlikely.

Dan Chase : Emily... Emily, I'm sure. I've been feeling it for a few weeks now. I thought maybe it was my imagination. My head making up ghosts to remind me I'm getting lazy. I still have things to worry about, but No, this is not a drill. This is happening. I got to go get ahead of it now.

Angela Adams : [exhales]  Okay. What can I do?

Dan Chase : [sighs]  I'm, uh... I'm thinking that, uh... we're gonna have to stay off the phones. You know, I'm gonna lay low for a bit, just to be on the safe side.

Angela Adams : Okay. How long?

Dan Chase : I don't know. A week, maybe. Couple of weeks.

    [sighs]

Dan Chase : A month, maybe.

    [chuckles]

    Dan Chase : I'm sorry.

Angela Adams : No, don't say that. You've... you have nothing to apologize for.

Dan Chase : All right. I'll call you as soon as I can.

Angela Adams : Yeah. Right. Okay. I love you, Dad.

Dan Chase : I love you, too. Bye, kiddo.

    [hangs up, dog whimpers]

Dan Chase : [looks at dogs in rearview mirror, Dave is panting and Carol's head is cocked]  What? I didn't lie to her. There's no reason to worry her right now about things we don't know.
