character driven espionage polit thriller tv show at the high level
Shadowboy_25cm19 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So, this is episode six and if you've watched this show thus far, you know, it's not action-packed Mission Impossible or Bourne Identity material, it's not James Bond or his siblings like 'Kingsman', it's not Marvel, DC or any Star Wars related tv show.

The story is rooted in the Cold War and in afghanistan, where the U. S. and the former U. S. S. R. (or Soviet Union, Russia) were the two atomic powers that kept a hold on the world and fought out their political and military conflicts in other countries.

The present time of this show takes place in the aftermath of the Cold War; there is no black vs white, no Good U. S. vs Evil Soviet Union. It's not that simple. It's more complex and the different sides are grey.

This show is more about the characters and it's a very character driven show. Meaning, any development in the show, any action and reaction, roots in the characters and results in their development. So, yes, there are a lot of dialogues, sharp written and excellently executed by the actors, and with each dialogue there is deepness, characterization and motivation, resulting in the development of the story.

Nowadays, I have to say, I think it's very brave, to produce a thriller show, that is not aimed at light entertainment, not filled with action, shoot-outs and fight scenes in each episode to keep the audiences' attention and interest, but filled with characters, their inner conflicts and their understandable motivations.

This said, this episode is filled with suspense, tense dialogues and further character development, still slow burning, not going the easy way to solve a conflict by rushing from one action-packed scene to the next till the final 'battle', but weaving a spy story arc inspired by the classic spy games of the '60s and '70s (p.e. Authors like Robert Ludlum, Frederick Forsyth, Len Deighton and John le Carré).

Enough said: I like this espionage polit thriller tv show, its characters and the slow suspense. Finally, we get to know, who the titular Old Man is and finally Harper and Chase meet each other. Now it's not only their espionage past, they have to settle, now it's getting personal.

I'm hooked and can recommend this tv show to any fan of old-fashioned espionage thrillers.

First episodes were great, but in decline ever since
jeroen-10619 July 2022
The show started out strong with a few great initial episodes, but has gotten weaker once Zoe entered the scene.

Now I am watching a woman who apparently wants to learn finding the 'cracks' in people, however she can't just get into character after all these episodes and she just starts to annoy me. I never liked her as an actress before because I'm always seeing the actress and not the character she's portraying, and unfortunately the writing doesn't help her either.

Despite some good dialogue, I don't enjoy the constant flashbacks.

Jumping around in time with flashbacks can make it hard for a reader to get oriented and settle into one particular story, in a specific time frame. Here it's just used as a cheap trick to reveal why things are the way they are in present day, but I'm constantly thrown out of the current timeline. A story is most compelling when the main character has something significant at stake, and is engaged in a struggle whose outcome is still in question. Whenever you cut to something from a previous time period, you're essentially dramatizing something that is already OVER, meaning its outcome isn't a question anymore. And there isn't the same sense of stakes, because no matter how the flashback ends, we know the character is going to end up in the present day situation that we previously saw, with some new and present problem - which it usually would have been better to have just stayed with, and developed further, rather than bringing its dramatic momentum to a full stop with a flashback.

No matter how good the scenes from the past are, they tend to not have the same sense of emotional import. They tend to play more as information about how the character go to their current place. This can be important to do, and it's certainly better to see these things in dramatic scenes than hear them described in dialogue, but what's even better is to see dramatic scenes in the present, when the outcome is still unknown.

The Episode Has Some Positives
Mike_Yike15 July 2022
I wrote a review on the last episode. I said that I thought I might be done with the series. I decided to watch VI. The whole series is simply too complicated. The characters keep telling the viewer what is going on via asking each other some of the same questions the audience would have. ("Why are we on this airplane?" "Why do you want to meet with that man?" Etc.) The technique means it is all simply too complicated.

Personally, I would like to hear some jokes thrown into the dialogue. The Jeff Bridges character joke with his lady companion from time to time. Would that be too hard?

Anyway, I said that the episode has some positives. The photography is good. Unlike the first series Jeff Bridges was in (Sea Hunt), this one is in color. And there was a nice, sightseeing ride on a motorboat. I could almost feel the wind in my hair as the boat bounced along the waves. I didn't even know where the boat was going. Like I said, the plot is too complicated.

Can't wait for the finale
chrishob-0576615 July 2022
A well acted episode that leaves you at the edge of your seat for the last 15 minutes. The episode ends on a cliffhanger, excited to see what happens next. The season finale should be a bang.

Slow action but okay
azizalmzyad-4463418 July 2022
Episodes of the series are slow. The first two episodes were great and the events are fast.. Then the episodes move slowly, but by the end of the sixth episode, it becomes clear that the events will accelerate with the upcoming episodes.

My first review on the initial episodes was a 10, relishing the slow unraveling of a terrific story like an onion with great actors.

Now, it's like watching great actors watching paint dry.

That's why I'm giving it a five, for the actors. Not for the story.

Zzzzzzzzz.

Once Zoe entered, my interest left.
flixpicks15 July 2022
Can't watch anymore. Should have had Dude kill Zoe when she threatened him. Can't get into her character. Does he really need her for her ability to see cracks in people? I'm lost. Too boring now.

my Lord
Lythas_8512 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I was skipping forward when everybody was on the plane.. when chase was blabling with zoe.. my dear Lord, why did they bring this zoe character? Not necessary.. take the terminal list for example.. they killed off his family real fast and dude then had only some old veteran partners and that is more like it..

they should have made chase a lone wolf trying to fix things and going for vengeance or whatever.. struggling in a world he does not understand well.. all that back and forth with the past.. dude, it should have ended in episode 4... at most.. too much chatting and action make it boring..

The show is not improving...
mwen001-216 July 2022
Episode six was the weakest episode so far! Directing felt like stage theater. Heavy dialogue scenes even made heavier to the point of being pretentious by the the way they were directed! Plus a few of these sense are simply too long. Slow burner turns into boring episode. I hope the come back to the quality of the first couple of episodes!

Im done with this series no more
alvaroacevedo21 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Everything was going well. Until they stupidly integrated Zoe into the plot, it doesn't make sense, I thought it was going to be one of the best series in years... I'm done with this series, too bad it had a lot of potential.

Unwatchable
nastasijevic117 July 2022
Not a single character or part of the story is making any sense. The show is not working on so many levels. Truly amazing!!!!! It is as if the writers did not have much to beging with, maybe just a premise - the old guy who is a bad ex CIA motherf..er living off the grid. Everything that followed was as an ugly and bizarre mess of an improvisation which is hard to watch. You can skip this one without looking back.

Episode 6

Warning: Spoilers
Some of the scenes are just so ridiculous on this show. We go from 0 to 100 from no action to absolute chaos.

I think the writing, the pacing, the dialogue all need to improve in season two.
