Superb buildup, let down by a simplistic climax
nidhunmoviebuff1 April 2021
In yet another tale of what could have been, Irul builds up a superb premise consisting of an intricately woven set of characters in a delightfully macabre setting, only to end in a simplistic fashion that denied the climax the narration deserved.

The film excels in every technical department, especially the exceptional sound design. I was given jolts at many junctures and the depth effects given to the noises of water leaking had me look around to see if in fact some pipes were left open in my own washroom!

But alas, the superb making style and the intense performances of the three leads is undone by a culmination of events that left a lot to be desired.

A one time watch, purely for the classy making and the phenomenal performances. But if you are looking for a truly well-rounded whodunnit, this isn't it.

Failed attempt
SPHariSP1 April 2021
Many loose ends thru out the story.

First half is like stage drama standard , especially the dialogs are so artificial. Even great artists like Soubin and Darshana couldn't save it. Fahad was charming and that helps some what. The jumb scares were also artificial.

There is no brilliance in making everything weird!!

Good Plot. Flawed Execution.
grarunkumar19942 April 2021
Irul involves three characters played by Fahad, Soubin and Darshana inside a house where the discovery of a dead body creates tension among the three.

Credits shows writers list include 4 or 5 people. They did end up having decent dialogues included uet couldn't seal the plotholes.

Fahad as usual, did a wonderful job where he created curiosity in the beginning and tension post an hour. Darshana seems to have done a good job yet was irritating at times which is pretty fine.

The technical department and production set of the film is amazing considering the Covid protocol mediated limitations.

The only con apart from plotholes in the film is Soubin who not only struggles to keep up with Fahad and Darshana but also fails in conveying proper emotions when needed. He is unsure what to emote during scenes with Darshana in the car, the annoying "electrocuted by calling bell" scene, his appearance which ill fits his young character ( he does show his 40yrs of age) and worst of all his dialogue delivery which is apt only for 'Saji' from Kumbalangi Nights. Soubin is not able to improve his voice and dialogues even after failed performance in Ambili, Trance, and Android Kunjappan. Even Nivin Pauly who stayed in comfortable comic romeo typecast proved himself with Moothon after classes from Mumbai. Soubin should either improve or should reconsider his acting career. Even his monotonous comic roles has become irritating after 5 years.

Overall a good directorial debut, decent writing, great performances and cleverly cut down run time.

Srinath Bhasi/ Roshan Mathew could've replaced Soubin and it would've been a good thriller.

WHY? WHAT? WT#!
luckylukein4 April 2021
After watching this movie I had a lot of questions on my mind.

-Why did someone make such a horribly flawed movie?

-Why did Fahad act in such a waste of time movie? Did he not read the script before hand? Who would choose in such a movie?

-Why would someone take his girlfriend inside his own house when an intruder is present who opens the door claiming it to be his house.

-Why would some strike a conversation with an intruder and then sit and have drinks with him?

-Why would you have a dungeon as your basement in your house?

-Why would you not run away or call the police after seeing a dead body? Does a crime writer not know the implications of not calling the police after a witnessing the crime. I mean, you have a credible witness with you who by chance also is a lawyer. The house is yours and there is an intruder claiming that it is his house. Quaintly dressed like he has been living there for some time.

-Why did Fahad's character claim that it was his house when he knew that the person standing outside the door owns the house.

-Why was the lawyer/girlfriend so stupid? Someone claims to first own the house, acts intelligent and strikes an "Intellectual conversation" with you. Then claims to be a petty thief who from the looks of things has gone through the belongings of the house, even gone through the books in the house but has not seen the body? You were handed the gun, you are a lawyer. Run away from the CRIME scene when you know there is a killer in the room. What the heck...

HOW? WHY? WHAT? WT#!

-Why did I watch this stupid movie.

  • Why are people rating this movie 10/10. Humm. Neurons not firing?? Brain dead??

Soubin was spectacular with his comedy . His acting made me laugh! The comic relief was intentional right?

Woah...great
karthikhari-646691 April 2021
There is nothing much to say about the film, but FaFa is lit. He done his job brilliantly. But soubin shahir's acting was not much good compared to Android kunjappan and sudani and his other movies. Had a thought that he is not the right person to that role. Darshana's performance was really good. In a nutshell the story revolves around the question who is the real killer. A real cat and mouse play. A must watch thriller mystery craft.

Starts like a mountain... Ends like a molehill
soumyamenon1 April 2021
Irul is a movie where you sit on the edge of the seat and predict the outcomes. Because the total set and vibes of the movie feels great to begin with. But as it progresses you realise that there are unnecessary drags just to build the anticipation. There come in moments where you feel like 'Ok... Move on now..' There are some cliche peek-a-boo moments in the movie as well.

Though it's been a success in building anticipation... The whole movie does not leave you quite satisfied. This movie could've been turned into something much better.

The film tries to indulge the audience into the dark and confusing premise of the film....but fails to do so due to many reasons.

Positives -Cinematography -FaFa,Dharshana Negatives -Soubin's role(it was neither convincing or captivating) -Bleak storyline -Plotholes The film is of course a one time watchable.

I wished the movie were only 20minutes
harisarz2 April 2021
Boring movie. From the beginning to the end the movie was very slow and it felt like the writer wants to extend the timing of the movie for no reason. It would be better if they had gone with short film. The story line is so bad and you can predict what will happen. Only the actors did their part well and only because of that i gave 3 stars for 3 of them.

IGNORE The Negative Reviews.
MandalBros-52 April 2021
As I was glued to my seat throughout the film I loved this movie. The suspense buildup in the 1st half is done brilliantly. And the BGM worked very well for this suspense. Loved the camera work during the conversation scene of three. What to say about acting when Fahadh, Soubin and Darshana are sharing the same screen together. Fahadh was great BTW.

Now although the killer has been revealed it's a open ended story as there are so many questions unanswered. And that's the reason this is NOT at all A ONE TIME WATCH. I only didn't like the last slow motion sequence in the rain. Climax may disappoint many but overall it's a Perfect EDGE OF SEAT THRILLER.

Available on Netflix.

Frustrating experience
firozmohammedmi2 April 2021
Easily the worst fahad faasil movie in the last 5 years.

Film starts off very well. With fahads entry, excitement reaches a peak. But after that it becomes an extremely frustrating experience. The characters stop making any sense. One scene where they are arguing feels like mosquito buzzing in your ears and is very torturing.

Towards the end, you just stop caring about the characters completely and just want this torture(of watching this movie) to end.

There are tons of plot holes and loose ends which the movie dont care to explain. This is probably the worst character (not performance) soubin has ever done in his career.

A one time not so thrilling watch....but worth watching.
nknithishpillai3 April 2021
First and foremost a huge appreciation to the sound team of the movie for bringing in even the minute sound effects into the picture with the nuances of the same and making it a mesmerizing movie experience.

The initial build up of the movie was breathtaking add to it the style quotient which stays steady throughout the entire length of the movie.

The cinematography feels crisp and the colour toning just adds more layers to the story telling and character build up, the dialogue deliveries are absolutely perfect owing hugely to the acting prowess of actors involved. Although the character Alex could have been protrayed with a bit more edge since it falls behind significantly in the later parts.

The plot premises is a huge let down which suffers more because of lack of continuity in switching between the scenes and seems to drag it out till the very end making the movie quite predictable. The cinematic revelations which would ideally serve the purpose of plot layout only drags down the movie because of poor execution in incorporating it to story telling following after it.

Half Baked Cake
tvedukr3 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The first 20 minutes shows us Soubin (Alex) and Darshana (Archana's) profession, their relationship which is problematic due to the workload of Archana.

Director Naseer Yusuf Izuddin places us audience in the shoes of Archana; making her the pov we don't know the story Alex has written in the book; she only learns about it with the conversations that happen between Alex and the guy (fafa) in the mansion, it brings in confusion to who is actual the killer. She is also just like the viewers confused of whom to trust between the two man. As the stories told by both are equally convincing.

There are lot of Jump scares here and there, some comical elements too. Overall set is designed very well and it's just amazing how they shot everything in a mansion(due to this pandemic) still managed to execute this well.

But I felt that Soubin was forcing emotions, it was not up to the mark as his old performances in Sudani andAndroid Kunjappan. Darshana was perfect and Fahad did an excellent performance, truly justice to his role.

One standout scene from the whole movie is when the three characters are shouting which is creating a lot of confusing to the viewers, it was actually executed very well.

Some dialogues had a artificial feeling to them, didn't get that natural feel. Mostly in the exchange of Alex's part.

I thought that they should have extended the runtime and explained the fog ending a little more, it was not that extraordinary ending. And if only half of the attention was given on dialogues and script as it was given on Art direction and sound design it would have been a perfect OTT crime thriller.

expected a better show
rajeshtiwarirt4 April 2021
Good story. But a good story need some interesting expansion. You may use a single camera but that is no more artistic to keep moving thta camera often. This was never a thriller in any length of frame. Good thing - a short film.no guys do it better next time.

As usual Fahad shines and its not Soubin's cup of tea. There are lot of loose ends in the movie and so many things are left unexplained.

I am glad I decided to watch the movie despite of many negative reviews. Yes it had it flaws, but overall execution was good. Good performance by all (and the only) 3 characters in the movie .! This movie (at-least for me) gave me a feel of watching a Hollywood movie..

Not a movie for everyone!
vistri10 May 2021
I am rating this movie only because of all the negative reviews flying around this movie. It's a sombre movie and Fahad pulled out a spectacular performance. Not every day you get a psychological thriller. As many of you might agree, Soubin wasn't the best cast for the role he did. Nonetheless, it created the tension and the doubts in the neutral person present. I admire the attempt made by the team. The director cannot add the gore you might see in Korean movies of the same Genre.

NB- If you're not one for psychological crime thriller and is looking for a family movie this is not a movie for you.

sujith789_reviews3 April 2021
  • The story is good and felt a good thriller untill the last 10 minutes. Really enjoyed the movie till the last 10 minutes.

  • Climax was ok, but the slow motion scenes before the climax were totally unneccessary.

  • Watched in Netflix, Running time about 1 hr 30 minutes, Uses some language so may not be advisable to watch with kids.

  • Overall, its a good horror thriller to watch after a hard days work.

Wrong bet
bananasonata9 April 2021
I see some similarity to Ittefaq. Not my usual style, but I will try to avoid spoiler in this review. Good in terms of creating the suspense and slowing building to the climax, yet, do lack of some closure. I still remember where the boyfriend pull out a blank page of page 394 from the thief's pocket, what does that mean? It had a full one second shot. The way the boyfriend presents throughout the movie raised many questions especially after watching the ending. For this kind of movie, every word the actor said, every scene that was shot need to be meaningful and paved a road of clues to the ending. Obviously, I made the wrong bet and not feeling great at all. Overall, still a good movie to watch and would watch a second time.
