- In National City, Querl is carrying a box and keeping in contact with the rest of his team via comm buds. He returns to the Tower with the package, which holds a "Welcome Home Kara": cake. Supergirl is resting in the next room under a red sunlight, regaining her strength after her sojourn in the Zone.
Supergirl has a nightmare of the Zone. When she wakes up, Alex assures her stepsister that she's safe and they hug. She takes Supergirl to their friends, and they welcome Supergirl home. Supergirl thanks Lena, saying that she wouldn't be there without her.
Zor-El comes in and says that their headquarters is impressive, and says that he's in all of their debts. While John talks about finding missing loved ones, Nia looks pensive and Lena notices. Zor-El says that before he goes to Argo City, he wants to see what his daughter has been doing on Earth.
The next day, Kara and Nia take a disguised Zor-El to CatCo. He's posing as Kara's uncle Archie from Midvale, and Kara worried about how she left William hanging. Nia assures Kara that William will understand, and that she's covered with Andrea for Kara's absence.
Andrea is waiting, and figures Kara will have a great story. Kara says that there is no story, and that the resistance leader she was "imbedded " with backed out. Andrew says that it's disappointing, and then snaps at Kara and walks off.
Andrea calls everyone to a meeting and notes that CatCo is ranked number eight. She says that their reputation took a hit after Lex's trial, but says that they need to get back on top or she'll get a new staff. After the meeting, Andrea tells Kara that she wants Kara to get an exclusive with Supergirl about how the heroine stopped the National City Phantom attacks. Kara is shocked at the news, and confronts Nia, who says that Alex didn't want to burden Kara with the news. Nia explains how the Phantom broke loose, and says that it was Lex's fault.
Zor-El is busy lifting a copier, and Nia goes to stop him. William approaches Kara, and she apologizes for leaving without saying goodbye and never calling him. He says that he understands, but tells Kara that he has other plans after work and can't go out with her for coffee. William finally says that he's met another woman, Mary, and is with her now.
Out on the balcony, Zor-El tells Nia that the powers are intense. She sympathizes, and Zor-El sees a satellite speeding toward them. Nia tells him to suit up and great ready to fly.
Supergirl and Zor-El fly up at the satellite. A piece breaks off and starts a fire on an island, and they notice that the former DEO logo is on the island and now a toxic waste dump, thanks to Lex's efforts.
Later, Kara returns to CatCo, where Andrea is in her office watching a newscast about how CatCo's ratings are falling. Kara says that she had a lead on a major environmental disaster story, but Andrea doesn't care if it doesn't relate to Phantoms. Andrea sends William to investigate, hoping they'll expose Lex. Kara wants to cover the story, but Andrea says that she wants to interview Supergirl and boost their ratings.
At her desk, Kara goes over news stories about the Phantoms, and has a panic attack. Zor-El calls her after analyzing the oceans, and says that Earth is going the same way as Krypton. Supergirl meets her father at the Tower, and explains that Earth has been having environmental crises for years, and it's complicated.
John comes in and says that a fuel leak is causing the fire, and it's coming from a Dominator Warp Drive. Zor-El says that Krypton had the same problem, and if he can look at Krypton's data he might be able to stop the environmental collapse. He asks to access the data in Supergirl's pod, and she takes him to the Fortress to access the data there.
Nia goes to the Tower and finds Lena, and says that Andrea is looking for Kara to finish her story. When Lena tells Nia that Kara and Zor-El are together at the Fortress, Nia looks pensive. Lena calls her on it, and Nia says that she'd give anything for another day with her mother. She asks Lena how she defeated the vision of her mother in the Zone, and says that she's there to help Len figure out what it really meant and how she defeated it
Zor-El and Supergirl look around the Fortress. She says that she avoided coming there for years so she wouldn't have to see reminders of Krypton, and Zor-El apologizes for not doing enough to save Krypton. He vows to not let the same thing happen to Earth that happens to Krypton, and accesses the data. Supergirl remembers Lex attacking her the last time she was there, and Kelex comes up. She tells the robot what Zor-El is looking for, and Zor-El tells his daughter that he knows how to save Earth's oceans.
Andrea reviews William's story and says that it's boring, and says that Lex used a third-party to dispose the toxic waste. His boss insists that Lex's toxicity is the reason for the fire.
John and Brainy return from putting out the fire. Zor-El and Supergirl arrive, and Zor-El describes the problem. Kelex, modified by Zor-El so that it's "Oscar" and can clean up the garbage. Oscar can use Coluan technology to shrink the trash, convert it to energy, and absorb the energy. Zor-El admits that Earth has alien technology that Krypton didn't, and John warns that some alien technology doesn't interact well with othe4r type. He also saw Kryptonite on the island, and warns that they should investigate further. Zor-El warns that by then it will be too late, and John agrees but wants Oscar recalled at the first sign of distress. Zor-El agrees and sends Oscar to the island.
Oscar evaporates the chemicals, and the others watch on the monitors. Brainy admits that Oscar is working better than Zor-El predicted.
In her office, Andrea earns that her sponsors are pulling their advertising. She takes her amulet medal from her safe, and then as Acrata goes to Luthor Manor and finds evidence that Lex was directly involved in the toxic waste dumping.
Oscar begins attracting garbage instead of converting it, and it doesn't respond to Zor-El's transmitted return command. Oscar falls into the ocean, and Brainy is unable to find him even without satellite imaging. Supergirl and J'onn fly out to find Oscar.
Alex and Lena return, and Zor-El discovers that the DEO had Daxamite cloaking tech. Lena uses her knowledge of the technology to locate Oscar, and they discover that his core is overheating and could explode with the power of an atomic bomb. Brainy has an idea and suggests they give Oscar a computer virus and shut it down. He needs to get a drone close enough to Oscar. Zor-El insists that he can use Oscar to save Krypton, then hastily corrects himself to say "Earth".
Lena prepares to decloak Oscar, and Alex tells Zor-El that they have to shut the robot drone before it explodes and kills thousands. She tells Zor-El to help Brainy with the virus or step aside. Zor-El helps Brainy.
A now giant-sized Oscar emerges from the ocean and goes ashore. It opens fire on a junkyard, and Supergirl, Sentinel, J'onn, Dreamer, and Brainiac-5 arrive to fight it. Oscar continues absorbing trash, and protecting it at the same time. Sentinel and Dreamer go to evacuate the civilians, and Brainiac-5 launches the drone but loses control of it. Lena tries to recall it but can't gain control of it.
J'onn confirms that Oscar is protected by a force field it acquired from the DEO technology, The field is keeping Lena from accessing the drone, and breaching the field could create a backlash.
Brainiac-5 insults Kelex, needing to get close enough to the drone to activate the virus. He grabs a piece of trash that Oscar is absorbing, and he sifts through the trash while a suited Supergirl and J'onn attack Oscar to distract it. It fires an energy blast cracking Supergirl's suit and its protection against the Kryptonite in Oscar.
Supergirl has more flashbacks to the Zone, and Sentinel runs forward and shoots at Oscar. Dreamer joins her and blocks Oscar's energy blasts, and it knocks them all back. Brainiac-5 reaches the drone and activates it, and Oscar collapses. At the Tower, Zor-El says that they did it, and Lena tells him that Brainy couldn't have created the virus without Zor-El's help. Brainiac-5 emerges from the giant creature with Kelex, and Supergirl picks up the creature and throws it into the sun.
Back at the Tower, Supergirl tells Zor-El that the others are taking Kelex back to the Fortress. Zor-El tells his daughter that now he needs to return to Argo City and see his wife. He didn't think he could see his mistakes reflected in her eyes. Zor-El thought that if he could save Earth, he could earn his way back to her. He was so focused on the past, he made new mistakes. Zor-El assures Kara that he wasn't one of his mistakes, but she doesn't need to carry the weight of the world on her shoulders.
At CatCo, William talks to Andrea and points out that she published her article. She says that it was a good article, and the real story is Supergirl and her "Super Friends" stopping all the attacks on National City. Andrea figures that they need to think bigger, and she wants a full profile on the heroes. She tells William to track all the superheroes moves so they call CatCo first.
At home, Nia gets a call from Lena. Lena tells Nia that she's realized she doesn't have to feel guilty about her mother's death. When she faced the Phantom, it let her finally let go. Now Lena is going to learn who her mother really was by going home to where she was born. Lena thanks Nia for her advice. Once Nia hangs up, she looks at a photo of her mother.
At her apartment, Kara tries to work on her story about the Phantoms. Alex is with her, and Kara tells her that it was cold and empty in the Zone. She says that she needs to talk about it, and doesn't want to be alone anymore. Alex assures her stepsister that she has Alex, and Kara wonders if her fear will ever go away. Considering, Alex says that they'll get through it together.
Kara figures that she needs to write her story about how National City came together to face the threat against it. Alex agrees, saying it's a courageous thing to do.
In her bed, Nia wakes up from a nightmare and says Nxy's name.
