Lena suggests she use her mother's book of spells to find Nxyly, and Nia offers to help Lena figure it out starting the next day.
Kara tells them that William is going to be embedded at the Tower covering the Super Friends. Alex agrees, saying that they need the public support, and J'onn insists that William will have to abide by their strictures, including keep Lena's presence on the team a secret. Kelly says that she'll be having a home check with Esme's new foster family. Kara starts laughing, and says that it's Nxyly and she's really happy.
On Mitch's ship, Nxyly laughs and says that she's used her orb to track another Totem in National City. Mitch warns that when they leave the ship, the Super Friends will be able to track them. Nxyly isn't impressed.

At a martial arts festival, older fighter Igor Starros tells his young opponent Frank Creed that there's no shame in fear and Frank should become one with his humanity. Igor shows Frank the Totem and says it once belonged to a monk, and it keeps Igor focused. Nxyly blasts her way in and tells Igor that the Totem is one of the seven keys to unlocking the power of the universe. She tells him to give it to her, and Igor tosses it to her and she activates it. The Oracle tells Nxyly to use the Totem's power wisely, and it transforms into a red crystal.
Supergirl flies in, and Nxyly blasts the fighters back. The heroine tries to shield them, but the fighters are hit by the blast of energy and start gleefully fighting each other. Nxyly has Mitch teleport her up to the ship, and Supergirl calls in the other Super Friends for backup.
Later, Lena and Dreamer are going through the spell book and watching the news about the chaos. Sentinel, Guardian, and J'onn are there, and Supergirl arrives and tells Lena and Dreamer what happened. They figure Nxyly got the Humanity Totem and drained the fighters of their humanity, and Dreamer uses an app to track outbursts of violence.
Lena says that they found a spell to locate what once was lost, and they have to use the energy from the Totem to power it. Lena says that they need a sample of the ionized air from the Totem' use to locate it, and Dreamer goes to get a sample. William comes in and asks to talk to Supergirl privately. They got out on the balcony and William figures the strange events of the last few weeks are related to Nxyly. He wants to write about Nxyly, and Supergirl says that he could give away to Nxyly that they're tracking her, and endanger the people further. William concedes that she has a point.

When William says that there are certain things he can't write about, Andrea reminds him of his reputation and tells him not to hold out on her. William says that they're his sources and it is bad for CatCo to "burn" them so early. Andrea tells him that he's not one of the Super Friends and they're not his friends, and he should either come back with a story or not come back at all.
Dreamer is analyzing the sample, and Lena is trying to cast the spell. She releases an energy spike, and reverses Dreamer's handedness. Supergirl comes in and tells them that the violence is spreading, then "feels" Nxyly and says that now the imp has compassion rather than rage. The heroine tells Lena that they need the spell to work.
On the ship, Mitch hurts his hand and Nxyly worries about his injuries. He wonders if she's okay, and Nxyly chuckles and says that she's fine. They detect the next Totem at The Hague.
William goes back to the Tower and watches Lena as she works on the spell. He assures her that her knowledge of magic is off the record, and she explains what she's doing. Lena says that she's done everything from the book, and William suggests that she's being too technical and she needs to put her heart into it. As William goes, Lena thanks him for the advice.
The violence continues through National City.
At home, Dana assures Esme that they have plenty of food. A neighbor attacks them, and Esme screams and breathes fire at him. He runs off, and Dana hugs Esme and checks on.
At the Tower, Supergirl and J'onn confirm that the violence is spreading. They admit that they "borrowed" some satellites to find Nxyly and the Totem, but have come up with nothing. Lena comes in and tells them that she needs wild seeds for the spell, but the botanical garden is near the arena what the violence broke out. She says that she has to gather the seeds herself, and Supergirl and William insists on going with her.

Lena, Supergirl, and William go to the botanical garden and find the seeds. As Lena gathers them, people attack and Supergirl and William fend them off.
The guard gets a call, and Nxyly sneaks up behind him.
Lena casts the spell and the magic is released. Nxyly's eyes glow blue, and she can't kill the guard. Meanwhile, a woman William is helping becomes violent and attacks him, and Lena figures that she's made things worse.
The trio go back to the Tower, and Lena figures that the spell amplified the Totem's power and drained the humanity from more people. Supergirl suggests Lena try another spell, saying that magic is their only option.
On the ship, Nxyly considers why someone would hurt people for gain. Mitch figures something is wrong with her, and Nxyly suggests that the Totem is the gauntlet, and flooded all of the compassion and humanity from its victims into Nxyly. He suggests that they get the other Totem without hurting anyone, and Nxyly hugs him and thanks him for always thinking about her.
Supergirl flies back to the Tower and tells the others that Nxyly is overwhelmed with the humanity of her victims. They figure that using the Totem is the gauntlet, and Supergirl suggests they take more humanity away from the original victims and flood Nxyly with it, forcing her to return the humanity to the others or at least draw her out.
Lena says that she won't do it, and starts to argue with Supergirl. Dreamer leads William off, and Supergirl says that she believe sin Lena and is terrified because Nxyly makes her powerless. She begs Lena for her help, and Lena says that Nxyly is manipulative and cruel like Lex, and Supergirl beat him by doing the right thing. Lena doesn't want to hurt anyone with her magic or deceit, and Supergirl agrees that they can't cross lines. She then figures that they can use the light of day for a spell against Nxyly.
William complains to Alex and J'onn that they aren't letting him report on what's really going on, and that the situation has changed since they proposed their original deal. William says that they don't have a plan to deal with the violence, and Supergirl comes in with Lena and says that their plan is that Lena amplifies the Totem's power, overwhelm Nxyly with the stolen compassion, and force her to undo the Totem's effects. Alex warns that the plan will cause even more chaos, and Supergirl says that they'll have to spread out and try to contain the violence.
William asks what Lena changed, and she says that he changed. He has to write about what's going on, and Supergirl says that the time has come for transparency so people can make up their own minds. Williams sets his own rules for writing his own story, and the others agree.
Lena and William go to a park and Lena casts the spell while William takes notes. When Lena casts the spell, the people become more violent. The Super Friends do damage control as best they can, while Nxyly feels the stolen compassion and concentrates on fighting off the Totem's effects.

Supergirl stops a mugger, letting his bullets bounce off her, and flicks one back into his head knocking him out. When Nxyly uncloaks, J'onn tells Supergirl that they've detected it.
Nxyly returns the humanity to everyone, then drops the Humanity Totem. She's tells Mitch to fly down and get it, but Supergirl arrives and Nxyly has Mitch fly the ship away. Supergirl catches the Totem and smiles in satisfaction.
Later back at the Tower, the team locks the Totem in one of the negation boxes. Lena says that she can use some of the ionized particles to find the other Totems, where Nxyly is heading. However, there's only enough particles left for one, and Dreamer suggests that they go after the Dream Totem.
William shows Andrea his story, and she's thrilled with it. She asks where the Tower is, and who has the magical power is, and William refuses saying he's going to cover the story his way. Andrea can either take the stories he gives her, or he'll take them to the Daily Planet. Andrea gives in but says that she's moving his desk next to the bathrooms.
Later, Kara finds Lena reading William's story. Lena thanks Kara for encouraging her to embrace her magic. They share take out together.
Kelly goes to help Esme move out, and Alex arrives and Kelly introduces her. Going to talk to Alex privately, Kelly says that the Fords said Esme isn't a right fit for their family. Kelly told the Fords that it was their job to protect Esme, not hers to protect them. The two women turn to Esme, who figures that she's never going to have a real home. Kelly and Alex look at each other and then make the same decision and take the girl in.
