When Mike Cutter is in McCoy's office discussing Judge Malcolm Reynolds' competency due to his age there is a black and white framed photo on the wall behind McCoy, which is a shot from the show's opening credits, an aerial view of a man in the middle of a courtroom with his arm outstretched.
Ned Beatty and Sam Waterston worked together previously in Hopscotch (1980). Interestingly, Waterston played a character named 'Cutter'.
At age 71, this is Ned Beatty's first appearance on this series when he plays a judge. However, he played a homicide detective (a different character) on the sister show, Homicide: Life on the Street (1993) from 1993-1995, and again in Homicide: The Movie (2000).
Michael McCormick has played four different roles over the course of the series:
- Episode 19.7 Zero (2008) - Judge Mark Brannigan
- Episode 12.23 Oxymoron (2002) - Nicky Avakian's Attorney
- Episode 9.2 DWB (1998) - Dietrick's Attorney
- Episode 6.7 Humiliation (1995) - Marty Gerber
