- A living legacy of evolution is alive and well in arctic America. For generations, Alaska's eastern Beaufort Sea has sustained the health of its hunters: polar bears and Inupiat Eskimos. Truly home only in the Arctic, both are adapted to thrive in the harshest environment on the planet. With respectful conservation of the Arctic Ocean, the timeless balance between land, sea, human, and animal may endure indefinitely.—Arthur C. Smith III and Jennifer A. Smith
- Imagine that what you think you know about American polar bears is wrong. Imagine that most of what you hear about polar bears and climate change in Alaska is missing the point. Imagine a film that irrefutably documents the cognizant and social nature of polar bears, redefining the popular misconception that they are hostile and solitary.
ICE BEARS OF THE BEAUFORT witnesses the truth of polar bears never before seen on film.
To understand this truth is to understand that industrialization of Alaska's eastern Beaufort Sea would jeopardize the home and future of US polar bears, along with the people who live here.
The coastal and nearshore region documented by ICE BEARS OF THE BEAUFORT has been established as crucial polar bear denning habitat. Its a maternity ward. Its a de facto American polar bear sanctuary. In the face of climate change, adding the insult of industrialization to this habitat could represent the polar bears unthinkable death sentence. With development-- on and offshore-- widespread across northern Alaska and Canada, and more lease sales scheduled, these American polar bears have nowhere else to go.
Created by an Alaskan filmmaker living among the hunters of the Beaufort Sea-- the Inupiat Eskimos and the polar bears-- this non-narrated documentary bears witness to the precious and unprotected home that supports a thriving yet threatened way of life.
Do Americans have the will to preserve this natural sanctuary? Witness ICE BEARS OF THE BEAUFORT and decide for yourself.
