A new perspective
joshuamathew-0343829 September 2023
A really strong start to a show that I had low expectation of.

The trailers for the show felt poor and I was particularly worried that the Boys brand was being taken in a direction I wouldn't be a fan of. But with Amazon consistently producing the best superhero content in the tv space with Invincible and the Boys, I should have had more faith in them.

Where the Boys was a play on the Justice League/The Avengers, Gen V feels like a play on the X-Men and the school for gifted youngsters. I really like how we're shown a different side of the Boys universe and this is a great way to build the world. I'm a fan of the characters and there's a central mystery that has me invested. Also I'm surprised how many powers we see showcased, more so than the Boys, all of which are visually convincing. I find it funny that people are mad at the character which turns into a boy and girl (they don't understand satire).

Something New

Warning: Spoilers
I must say that going into this series I thought I was gonna get a regurgitated story of how Vought is evil, corporate america, social media etc. Which I did BUT seeing as how it is a spinoff and those are some of the main themes/topics in the actual show I can easily write them off as worldbuilding. Which on the topic of I must say that I LOVE the worldbuilding in just this episode alone. I love how we get to figure out how Maeve, The Deep, and A-Train got into the seven. And how we got to learn about the rank system which I found truly interesting. Also side note I'm glad they didn't tone the gore down and the shrinking scene they did. Even though I find most of it disgusting I still appreciate them not being censored.

Great start to a spin-off
SlummyT29 September 2023
This episode had me engaged throughout with the plot unfolding in front of me. The characters were interesting, the setting in which the series takes place (godolkin university) was intriguing, I was throughly impressed by the new super powers that were introduced.

I have faith that this series will be just as good as the boys was when that series first started. I am hoping for a mix of sex education and sky high but it looks more like it's taking more of a legion meets the boys path.

If you are departing if you should watch after the lacklustre superhero series and movies as of late like the boys this series stands high above the other.

Strong showing so far
stevenmonkeydishwasher30 September 2023
Very good so far, just about everything you'd expect from a The Boys spinoff, crudeness, humour, and violence and just dumb supe actions/consequences. All in all really enjoyed the first episode, also like how they the whole "them" thing....if it's gonna be forced on us then at least this isn't too jarring or insufferable as other shows.

Too summarize the main point of the first 290 or so characters that was my review I will now use the remaining 310 in that summary because without this summary apparently the first 290 characters was not enough, so in summary oh wait only 20 more characters le.

It's 10:01 somewhere

A pretty solid pilot actually.

This isn't some cheap spin-off like The Walking Dead Beyond the or Planet Sheen. It feels like like with The Boys as far as tone, feel and raunchiness goes. I think they've set up enough in these first two episodes to have me invested. The mystery seems really dark and bloody, and I do genuinely kind of like the characters so far.

Jaz's opening and backstory was quite tragic and kind of strange. She's a pretty likable lead. I think I'm going to like Emma quite a bit as well.

I'm most curious to see how they handle any satire. I think the very idea of a superhero college is pretty interesting and so far it isn't cringey or generic. I will say I don't think it's super funny so far, but that could change as it goes.

Good opening, I'll keep watching.

PRETTY DECENT
realdamienwayne5 April 2024
Pretty good start to the series, bit slow in some parts but NOT BORING.

Has some very interesting characters, like MARIE she has a very compelling and interesting backstory that interests me quite a bit, it's a little sad and very engaging. GOLDEN BOY is also a very interesting character even though he does some crazy stuff at the conclusion to the first episode.

This isn't the boys so don't expect that coming into this after all it is apart of The Boys universe so it is pretty solid. But over all great first episode. Watch it with an open mind and don't expect too much and it's got a good story but doesn't give too much away with what's going to happen next, but definitely worth a watch.

8/10 Definitely could've done. Some things differently but still great and interesting to watch and quite funny.

Gen V manages to create its own sphere!
miseencinematic3 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Much like The Boys, Gen Vs pilot episode starts off with an incredibly strong cold open - an introduction of the main character that catches the viewer's attention right off the bat. Fans of the mothership already know how dark this universe can get: it's bloody, it's gory and not something for people with faint hearts. Pushing boundaries within not even the first three minutes, Marie accidentally kills her parents with her own blood, discovering her powers for the first time in her life.

The traumatic event turns out to be the catalyst shaping her story and builds into her strong character, determined not to repeat the same mistakes. After a time jump, we see her work on self control by training her powers. The first episode is solely focussed on introducing Marie. While we meet different characters throughout the episode, it feels like we are new at Godolkin University ourselves. We get vague ideas on who they are, solely seeing the other characters through Maries eyes.

The show offers an incredibly talented cast and much like The Boys, Gen V provides characters that mark for great representation (and backs away from stereotypical tropes). We have an incredibly strong woman of color at the front and center, non-token queer characters like Emma or Jordan, who is genderfluid, an identity we rarely get to see on mainstream TV. Action-driven, we are thrown into the story with remarkable pacing and build-up of what's to come. Although we don't really know where exactly the story is going, it keeps us engaged with scenes that hint at a dark secret that the characters have yet to unravel.

The boys tween edition.
MiloSuperSpesh29 September 2023
Plot wise it's a roller coaster of feels, intrigue, teen emotions, dark pasts and secrets.

But it's let down by more of the same, cheap gore, cheap sex stuff, woefull cgi.

Throw in more cliche tropes of teen angst and explotative media empires and moraly bankrupt ceo's/ board of directors.

Most of the cast seem to act well, some might even be doing a better job here than on the boys, feels like it's well directed and clean shots with minimal janky cutaways.

Music and sound fits well, tries to tug at the heart strings.

Don't believe the trailer as the pilot shakes things up.

Bottom line, fans of the boys will love it, casual / curious fans who aren't fully invested will still find things to enjoy.

S1.E1 - What a Disappointing First Episode! [5/10]
panagiotis199327 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(S1. E1) My Reaction / Review for Gen V Season 1 Episode 1 ''God U.'': The episode starts in a really gory way, I like it. This girl has the power of controlling her own blood? That's kinda lame. So this show is all about a university full of horny, selfish and immature teenagers, I don't really know if im into that but I will give it a chance and I will watch a few episodes for sure. Its very different compared to The Boys though. Marie seems to be the main protagonist, I don't know if she is interesting enough to be the main protagonist though. This guy's power is that he can become a woman and then become a man again? What kind of dumb power is this? Also what about the main ''cool'' and ''powerful'' guy, he has fire powers? Really? Fire powers? Why not find something original? This sucks. Golden Boy killed Brinkerhoff? Interesting, I didn't see that coming. Finally some action. Is Golden Boy supposed to be a Homelander cheap copy? He killed himself so probably not. Wow, overall this episode is a freaking dissapointment. My rating is 5/10.

"Can we try something new?" Yes, we can baby!
moritzherz8 October 2023
In 2023 finding a good television show is like digging up gold in your garden. It's almost impossible.

This friday The Continental concluded in a lackluster, overlong and boring finale and we got the next disappointment. But fortunately Amazon has another show to serve us for dinner and thank God it is delicious!

The first episode introduces us to the main characters and they are all interesting and three-dimensional. They have background stories and understandable goals and motives.

This is refreshing if you are coming from garbage meals like Ahsoka.

They also managed to keep the soul of the franchise by using the same degree of violence. The sex scene was great and tops the ones from The Boys season 3.

I also want to adress the inportant topic of wokeness in this show, so you do not hurt your stomach by devouring this show:

There is some implemented, that is non discussable and it bothers me, but it is not on the same level as in Disney's productions so it is a side effect. There is also a bit satirisation of the topic, but it is too early to judge on this case.

To sum it up, they took all the core ingredients that made The Boys a 5-star michelin meal and gave it a new touch. The result is a fresh, delicious meal that will hopefully take us through the fall.

Pretty good start.
saurioffagotta-3590829 September 2023
The first episode of Gen V presents a promising start to the series. One standout element is the character of Marie, who possesses super creative powers and exhibits intriguing motivations and a cool backstory. Marie's portrayal as a true hero resonates with me, and her dialogue is notably unique, adding depth to her character. Additionally, her chemistry with Golden Boy is a highlight, demonstrating a strong dynamic between the two characters. However, I note that to form a more definitive opinion, further character development is required, leaving room for potential growth and exploration.

Gen V impressively captures the essence of the older section of Gen Z and young millennials, representing them in a way that feels authentic and true to life. It manages to navigate the fine line of depicting this demographic without succumbing to stereotypes or criticism, particularly with its realistic portrayal of modern college campuses.

The episode introduces a new layer to the Boys, setting the stage for potential developments that could spice up the storyline in a positive way. This injection of fresh perspectives and characters adds intrigue to the show's overarching narrative.

While the show occasionally veers into a tone reminiscent of CW series, I express my preference for it over that style. This suggests that Gen V successfully strikes a balance between familiarity and originality in its presentation.

However, the portrayal of Marie's relationship with Emma receives criticism from me. I find it unrealistic and reminiscent of fictional bonds like those in Harry Potter, lacking believability. The chemistry between them feels forced and not reflective of how individuals like them would interact in real life.

The side cast, including characters like Golden Boy and Andre, shows potential. Golden Boy's concept is intriguing, but I acknowledge the need for further exploration. Andre's character and powers are appreciated, but his likability is in question.

Despite some shortcomings, the episode sets a compelling stage for future developments in the series. It leaves me excited and eager to see how the story and characters will evolve.

In terms of humor, while the comedy in Gen V hasn't fully resonated with me, I recognize its potential and room for improvement. It may not have reached the comedic heights of other series, but there's hope for growth in this aspect.

Clancy Brown's character stands out as a potential compelling villain, provided the show continues to develop his character effectively.

The final act of the episode is a strong point, as it effectively sets up the overarching narrative of the series, leaving me with a sense of anticipation and curiosity.

In conclusion, the pilot episode of Gen V earns a respectable 7/10 rating from me. It showcases promising elements, including intriguing characters, an authentic representation of its target demographic, and a setup that piques my interest.

Finally a sci-fi series about Yound Adults!
allnewsuperfake10 October 2023
I'm so glad that there is finally a series out there that shows us young adults in school, with all their terrible problems and the hard choices they have to make. Can you believe that a woman who needs a knife to cut her wrists so that she can use her blood as a knife has to fight to become a A-grade-superhero celebrity? Well, here is her story.

I have no doubt that the creators of the original IP are sitting at home and wonder: Why didn't I think of this? Why did I make the one true success story with superheroes since End Game by doing something different if I could have just used archetypes involved in story lines that feel like meme formats at this point and create something entirely forgettable?

I wonder if someone is going to fall in love?! Or maybe even have to potential boyfriens, like, in a triangle?! And will we ever see anybody doing actual, you know, school stuff, like reading? Can't wait!
