Let me get this right...
... Chris was somewhat BORED by Poltergeist?? Maybe not, he gave it a B+.
That thing scared the stuffing out of me when I saw it in the theater in 1982. I realize Chris was born six years later, so by the time he did see it I'm sure the special effects did look cheesy. But the fright factor in this film was the fact that it looked like a normal middle class home in which all of the horror is happening. Not some run down haunted house. And you don't know until the end exactly WHY it is happening in this home as opposed to any of the other normal homes in the neighborhood.
He talked about the couple in the film seeming like just a normal couple, having conversations and enjoying each other's company although they had been married a long time. I guess I was the most naive 24 year old on the planet in 1982, but it didn't sink in at the time that they had not been married that long. The two younger children were presumed to be theirs. The older daughter was the child of the husband and some unnamed person - dead or divorced? It is never really mentioned.
I guess I was just expecting something more on the light side given the fact that E.T. came out the same year as Poltergeist with the same director for both films. I slept with the lights on for a week after I saw it.
