Jaeger is great as the leading woman, but it's tedious, badly written, and the twist is too too clever
secondtake27 November 2012
Solitary (2011)

The lead actress here, Amber Jaeger, might be the only real acting talent in this fairly small cast. But she's really good, as she was in he husband's recent movie, "Take Me Home." In a way this is a suburban middle class version of the Ashley Judd look at insanity, "Bug." And like "Bug," this recent movie is low budget and deeply flawed.

And there is also a huge twist near the end that is very clever, and you can see a much better movie in it all by rearranging the clues to the twist so the audience can build some expectation. I can't say more without ruining that part of it, but I can point out the obvious that any viewer will discover in short time--the movie is slow, redundant, and confusing. It's highly improbable (or so it seems). If it had been even more improbable, so that you didn't just think it was bad writing in a bad movie, you'd start to wonder why it was improbable, what kind of weird "Memento" like trick is at work.

No such luck. Instead we have to see Jaeger's fighting her mind, and her fear of open spaces, and ignore the weird facts. Once you realize what is really happening (in the last ten minutes) you'll wonder why the whole movie couldn't have been an extraordinary mind trip, a fanciful game of invention and imagination. But that would make sense (like it does, in a weirdly parallel way, in the Robin Williams romance, "What Dreams May Come").

This is an indie production made in 2009, but in one of the common and frustrating aspects of that world, it sometimes takes really long to find a distributor, and so it's out in 2011. The director, Greg Derochie, is a special effects guy from Hollywood (everyone wants to be a director, you see), and in a huge irony, the special effects here are clunky. (I'm going to guess he didn't transfer to a low budget world very well.)

Anyway, I love movies, and I rarely say this, but unless you're an Amber Jaeger fan (there must be several of us in the country--we'll see more of her), I'd skip it.

OK story, good lead performance
rhefner200223 December 2020
Solitary looks like another damsel-in-distress Lifetime TV movie, but it has some decent tricks up its sleeve. The mystery is enough to keep you interested. The apparent resolution is cliched, but it turns out to be a red herring, and the actual reveal at the end is...well, not very original, but I bought it anyway. Maybe I was just in a charitable mood. Amber Jaeger's performance is really what knits things together. I'd like to see her in some other films with better scripts. Entertaining, and worth a watch if you're not feeling too critical.

Not a great film, but I don't regret watching it
Bastette549 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Warning: It's not that this review *might* contain spoilers, it *does* contain them.

Because the Amazon Prime blurb about this said that the main character would have to face a "mind-bending truth," I was expecting something science fiction-y. What was in that locked room? Was her husband a multi-dimensional traveler or something? Was there a portal to another universe in the locked room? Well, that was my initial theory, anyway. But then it just got annoying and frustrating. Why was this woman so unresouceful about getting that door opened - how hard could that have been? And why was every human being she interacted with so weird? Well, the answer to the second question is probably that the acting pretty poor. It had the quality of a subpar TV movie. Not as bad as some Amazon movies whose actors aren't even professional, but not up to the standards of the Lifetime channel, either - and that's saying something.

As the movie progresses, she starts to think that her husband and sister are trying to drive her crazy by gaslighting her, so they can rob her of a large inheritance. They already had a head start with that, because she was severely agoraphobic and couldn't leave her house. I really didn't want that to be the answer to the mystery, because it's been done so many times, and I hate seeing sleazebags destroy a perfectly decent person. I was still holding out for the parallel universes.

I won't reveal the "mind-bending truth," but it did take me by surprise. I've seen a lot of this type of movie, where a big twist at the end changes everything you thought the movie was about. This movie does a good job of misleading the viewer, setting them up for an unexpected ending. And in this case, a lot of what went on in the movie makes more sense in the new context.

So it's a B movie, and it looks pretty low-budget, but it worked for me as escapist fun.

A great movie about Agoraphobia
lionman1315 April 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This movie had all the makings of another cheap low budget thriller, but it was much more than that. The acting was spot on, and draws the viewer into the mystery. Leading star Amber Jaeger is suffering from Agoraphobia, and her husband comes up missing. She has a vulnerable sexiness that keeps you on you hills the whole movie. There are police officers, a shrink, and an estranged sister in the picture that could be in on a plot against her. Even though it becomes evident from the start that the the husband may be dead or playing a trick on her, there are still some twists and turns that make for an interesting watch. If you are the emotional viewer get the tissue ready for this ending, because it packs a punch. This may be one of the better "artsy" films have seen in awhile.

I did NOT see this one coming!
HpyCmpr15531 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Wow.... I just happened across this yesterday on the Direct TV channel "Chlller" and I thought.....Oh Ho hum another boring movie to fill in two hours..." This one blew me away. I did NOT see the surreal twist at the end coming and it was totally off the charts. It was confusing and convoluted and you actually had to follow the plot......but they payoff at the end was well worth it. It left you scratching your head and wondering what was real and what wasn't...and what you would do if you were faced with that same situation...Locked doors, empty rooms and frightening scenarios from beginning to end. My biggest complaint about the movie?? The title does NOT do it justice. It needs a better title, a hook that will catch your attention. This one is worth watching, paying attention to and will leave you wondering what is real and what's not.

This was awful
beckaction27 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I guess I couldn't say much without adding a spoiler warning - so ... I don't know how many movies they can do and keep spinning off The Sixth Sense plot twist crud. I am SO over The Sixth Sense. I want to watch real movies about feasible characters with real plots that can happen in real life. These type of "we're going to play with your head and warp reality" movies are a cheap, untalented way of producing a product. I also think they are bad for people's mental health: If people want to have their head mucked up, watch this nonsense.

**I'd also recommend that anyone who has recently lost someone or is in a depressive state stay away from this movie.**

Other than that, I'm sorry I wasted two hours of my life on it. There should be some type of warning on films like these - the synopsis is - for instance - a LIE. This isn't really about a doctor treating a woman with agoraphobia. It's a series of made up illusions that have to do with a woman in a coma who lost her husband. It's way beyond the realms of reality. I don't even know what flipping genre it falls into; but they should have a particular genre for this type of Sixth Sense movie so those of us who hate it can avoid watching it. The whole "surprise" factor turned into "who gives a rat's bum?" for me a long time ago.

Based on A Short Story
robertllr27 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This film belongs--more or less--to the genre of the, "I'm already dead" film; probably the most well-known of which would be "The Sixth Sense." (See my review of "Donnie Darko" for a fuller list of moves that use this device.) What makes this movie a bit different, is that our protagonist is not exactly dead--she's in a coma, fantasizing her entire life and it's seemingly inexplicable oddities and terrors. Moreover, her psychiatrist in her fantasy is in reality the doctor presiding over her life support. The movie goes in for a bit of sci-fi, in that the doctor has some kind of techie wizardry that allows him to witness and participate in the patient's subconscious. The point of this "mind reading" is for the doctor to bring the patient to an understanding of her situation, so that she can choose either to stay on life support and live a dream life for the rest of her biological existence, or to die and move on. The rationality here is that it is the patient--not her loved ones--making the choice.

Sort of cool. But it's a dead steal from a science fiction story written at least 40 years ago, which used this exact same idea. The film makers could easily be sued for plagiarism if the original writer ever found out about the existence of this film. I don't remember the name of the story or it's author or even whether I read it in a magazine or a book all those years ago. But it just goes to show there is nothing new under the sun.

Total waste of time
flmovie24 June 2012
I watched this movie based on the reviews from IMDb. I totally disagree with most of the reviews I have read. This basically B movie trying to give you a psychiatric drama. What you actually get is bad acting. The production value is less than that of a made for TV movie on one of the low end cable networks. The film really only has 2 main characters the woman trying to figure things out and her psychologist. Almost everything takes place in her house. The plot is pointless it doesn't make you want to watch it to find out what is really going on. I am sorry for rambling but they force you to write 10 lines if it the movies is a waste. The out come of this movie is that it makes you feel angry that you wasted your time watching it. Do yourself a favor and skip this movie.

Heart, at its right place.
baunacholi-8615915 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Solitary? Never heard about it and accidentally stumbled on it... a completely unknown and rather quiet movie. No horror or crime and in my POV also no sci-fi . But what I can say is, it got me as a drama. Despite the obvious limited budget solitary manages to evolve a catchy little story (which is not necessarily brand new) but it shakes and gaslights the audience very well. What i particularly liked and what separated it from other movies with a similar premise was the underlying, almost philosophical question: would u choose to live a life in a golden cage or do you choose to let go & move on...

Absolute worst movie I have seen this decade
mdraper-861-64625124 August 2015
I spent 2 hours trying to make sense out of a story that made no sense. It misleads the viewer over and over again and makes the characters look as stupid as it makes the viewer feel. It is poor science fiction but is not labeled science fiction up front. The director helped write the story so I understand why he was involved in the making of it. What Ican't understand is how he found some apparently talented people to work on it. I was left with the feeling that I had wasted my time and that there must be more to the story. I want to say something good about the movie. I guess the actors did a good job with what they had to work with and it was free (with my satellite TV package.) If you are not a science fiction fan, skip this one.

Totally Unique and Fascinating
rbirge-113 May 2012
This is not a great film, but it is far, far better than the 5 average it has received. It is a mystery with a bit of science fiction added, and I suspect it is the science fiction part that is bothering some of the viewers. But even if you hate science fiction, you should give this movie a view because it will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time. Who is good and who is evil? You will not know until the very end, and the ending will be nothing like you have seen before. You will be left breathless and it will make you think. The acting is very good, and the timing and discontinuities are very well designed to keep you guessing. Don't miss this movie if you have a chance to see it.

Lugubrious Melodrama
lavatch19 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
"Solitary" is an overly manipulative film that misleads the viewer to a jaw-dropping extent. Alfred Hitchcock, the master of suspense, always liked to talk about the "mcguffin," which is a key detail at the heart of a plot on which the action turns. The viewer is tricked by the mcguffin, but the twist makes sense in the overall logic of the film. But in "Solitary," the mcguffin is big enough to accommodate a Mack Truck

The protagonist Sara Ballard's situation is that she has agoraphobia and severe panic attacks that keep her confined in her home. She meets an odd assortment of characters, all of whom are sinister. The film's mcguffin is that Sara is to inherit $2 million in a trust fund. The obvious implication is that she is being set up to appear insane, whereby she will lose her trust. And then...the filmmakers shamelessly pull the rug right out from under the audience.

While the actress did a good job with the role of Sara and there were some interesting camera angles, the film was nonetheless a stinker, due to the inherent dishonesty in the screenplay. Such characters as the two police officers made no sense in the greater context of the coma story.

A film that is 90% thriller and 10% maudlin melodrama does not achieve a coherent whole. It was disappointing that the pieces of this jigsaw puzzle could not have been arranged in way to give "Solitary" a uniform film style that built suspense and had an ending that followed logically from the action.

Oh Wow....Craptacular.....
wandernn1-81-68327412 June 2020
-1 Star The guy is the movie his accent seems horribly faked. If it isn't faked, I apologize, but maybe you should never ever use your real accent again if it isn't faked.

-1 Star for our 'first date' being a trip to the top of some mountain?? Seriously???

This is just too much flipping around. In the room, in a crash, outside, inside....annoying as hell.

-1 Star really? The payoff was pure utter crap. Crap Crap Crap.

Made it to the brutally bad ending tho... 2/10

I was more than amazed . . .
charles00025 April 2012
This was really a surprise, a film I had not really heard about, but just took a bit of a chance with it, not knowing what to expect.

I was more than amazed . . . certainly one the most original concepts for a story I've seen yet in a film, and incredibly well delivered via Amber Jaeger's character.

This is probably her best work, at least that I know of, and a bit of a risky role to experiment with, but she pulls it off about as perfectly as could possibly be done in the context of the story.

I'm not even going to give a hint at what eventually evolves out of this story as it unfolds . . . you'll just have to sit down and absorb this yourself. This is not an "action" thriller by any stretch of the imagination, but it is absolutely thought provoking.

I'm not even sure if there is anything I would try to compare this to, but no worries. I doubt you'll be disappointed . . . definitely 10 stars, and then some.

Low Budget Mystery
kosmasp9 February 2021
Agoraphobia ... but is this what this is about? Does the mind of our main character play tricks on her? And is that a pun considering what the story later reveals to us? Yes there are twists and I understand that some watching this may feel offended by how the movie evolves and develops. But if you don't have love for low budget movies, than this may not be for you from the start anyway.

This is about the intriguing story and how it is told. Does it have flaws? Yes! And too few also. But is it able to grip you and hold your attention until the end with the story and how it unfolds? Also yes - if you let the movie of course. Taste in movies is something that makes us discuss and also disagree a lot. I expect this to be the case with some who feel very strongly (negatively) here ... but that does not change what I felt while watching this. It is good for the budget it has and for mystery it serves the viewer. And the reveal is more than fine enough (with me)

Good Story
sanclan5 May 2019
I won't provide spoilers, but they are good to read after you watch the movie to see what everyone else thought. It is a good movie, with a good story, and a good level of suspense. Watch it closely. The acting by the main actress is good, in my opinion. I can't say that about the other actors in the movie. Also, the production is not the best, but it is very well worth watching. I recommend it.

Under the radar film that's worthwhile
SgPepr19 May 2019
This movie held my interest from start to finish. It was part Hitchcock, with a light touch of David Lynch with an ending I did not see coming. But one thing that really helped create the vibe of the film was the very good music score, which I don't think no one here has mentioned in reviewing this. I'm surprised I had not seen or heard of this movie in the 10 years since it's release...I feel it's better than a lot of films of a similar genre. Catch it on Anazon Prime if you can.
