Scary but true
dollyanna-2271010 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Plenty of bad reviews but I get annoyed with the "go to the police" and other armchair and keyboard advice. It's not that easy. If it WAS then every domestically abused woman (or man) would do just that. And do they? Huge majority don't until it reaches danger point. In this situation you weigh up the pros and cons. Is it worth all the upheaval? Losing your home, kids, job, and fear of looking over your shoulder every minute of the day expecting repercussions. Its a hell that you get trapped in and the show demonstrates that. Would a husband go to all that trouble to set you up just because you left him once and he had to beg you to come back? A narcissistic one would, definitely. Narcissists like to feel you depend on them entirely, not the other way round. Is it believable? Yes.

Is Joanne Froggatt becoming type cast????
cdeanroane17 October 2021
I do think that Joanne Froggatt is a good actress, but it seems she always playing the woman who has been raped as in Downton Abby and Liar. Now with this she playing almost the same person this time just a woman who has an abusive husband. I would like to see her playing something different however. This show is not bad but the PI just seems off in couple ways, and I am unsure if he is a villain or a good guy!

Back To Black
Lejink18 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This six-part ITV drama started as if it was going to be a searing examination of domestic abuse, then morphed into a strange Harlan Coben-esque it's-all-in-my-head, reversal-of-fortune mystery before settling down to a seen-it-before revenge thriller where we learn in the final episode that the plot was based on a Patricia Highsmith / Alfred Hitchcock Hollywood collaboration from almost 70 years ago.

Thematically, I found these plot shifts just too contrived and incredible to digest but in the end, rolled with the flow just to see how it all panned out in the end and if just desserts were duly served.

Joanne Froggat is the put-upon wife and mother of two young sons who puts up with her high-flying husband's controlling ways and violent mood-swings which regularly see him turn to lifting his hands to her. With seemingly no-one to turn to about her plight - she and her dying mum don't talk and she fell out with her best girl-friend years before - she worries that he will take her kids away from her in any post-divorce custodial battle, but soldiers on in her situation while really living no kind of life at all, treading eggshells about what kind of mood he arrive home in.

Then a mysterious young black man randomly starts talking to her outside a bar in one of her rare nights-out away from hubby and reveals that he's a private detective in the employ of her husband. He then spins to her a fantastical-sounding plot of the husband's to murder her, just like he apparently did with a young girl at his office with whom he's alleged to have had an affair and that she has to get her retaliation in first to stop him. But the plan she and the apparently conscience-stricken P. I. hatch goes awry and it's she who ends up fearing for her own mental health, consigned to a psychiatric-help facility, allowing her husband a clear field to sweep up the kids, with her seemingly safely out of the picture. But as she recovers her stability of mind, she revisits the events which led up to her current plight, gradually piecing together the truth and naturally decides to do something about it.

I suppose it was too much to hope that the show would continue with the domestic violence angle and I almost gave up on it when Froggat's revenge plan was shown to be based on something as flimsy as a cheap paperback crime novel, which she's somehow imagined as real. It just about righted itself again as she bravely sorts out out her life and hatches her own plan to turn the tables, although it was underwhelming to learn of the unoriginal "Strangers On A Train" inspiration behind the husband's plan.

It was all a bit ramshackle at times but with good acting by a dressed-down Froggat, Michiel Huisman as the evil husband and Samuel Adewunmi as his accomplice, it was a pity it fell into clichéd, incredulous sensationalism when it could have been a much darker and more realistic portrayal of the very real societal problem of domestic abuse, obviously exacerbated by the recent isolation imposed on families by the Covid situation.

A missed opportunity.

Crazy but pretty good
antide-4237614 November 2021
OK, of course the plot is bonkers. Yes Angela is the most gullible person on TV and yes it is unrealistic. But for all that 'Angela Black' kept me entertained and made me watch till the very end. Joanne Froggatt is always watchable but needs to stretch herself a bit now as she does seem to play the same type of role. I reckon there is plenty to come from her.

Decently acted, just leave you sense of reality at the door.

Seems cliched for first 3 episodes but then.....
sarah_glassford26 November 2021
After episode 3 things start to get more interesting. This is not as simple a story as it may seem. Not a brilliant show but interesting. Plus with Joanne Froggett in it it will always be watchable. Put yourself in her shoes - what would you think / do?

Ep 3
snktrss8 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
My take so far: She should have known as soon as the plan was not carried out that this was his way to get evidence against her and real or not the hitman did the job he was hired to do. Only on episode 4 at this moment.

A slick series.
Sleepin_Dragon5 December 2021
Angela Black is a suspenseful six part series from ITV, it doesn't follow any of the conventional rules, it seems to take you in a particular direction, but has a habit in moving you somewhere else.

Its very dramatic, and full of twists and turns, it shows the darker side of human nature, and how cruel one person can be.

You'll have to wait until the last episode to learn what's happening, it may just surprise you, I urge you to stick with it, as the ending is very satisfying.

The question you'll be asking throughout, will she be believed?

Terrific acting, Froggat and Huisman are both fantastic, he is chilling in parts, a very sincere villain. A very good supporting cast here also.

8/10.

... takes awhile getting into
bjarias17 November 2021
... bleak w/o-many-smiles (actually-none) ... and it takes several episodes to really get going ... when it finally does it's pretty good ... could they have done it all in one season.. probably ... the wait better be worth it should it go to another season.

Slowly giving up the will
Casino-Royale19 October 2021
I had high hopes for this after initial moments of episode one but halfway through episode two I'm hoping Angela Black gets bumped off!

She has zero emotion especially in her voice not sure if this is intentional or even Joanne Froggat gave up herself.

She is not in the slightest bit a likeable character and I have no vested interest in if or how she survives.

Yet to even find one character that is appealing and why are so many child actors these days so poor? They need to stay away from acting school and be more natural.

Disappointing to say the least.

Would watch Joanna Froggart paint a fence
enquirieslearneforsyth25 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Joanna yet again is perfect in her role. As soon as I saw she was the star I knew it'd be good.

I did guess having been in her character's shoes (and work with both parties) a man like that wouldn't be duped and not only would have a back up plan but a narcissistic plan to show she was the crazy/abusive one. I saw one reviewer ask "why not go to the police" simple answer ep1 sheer terror. Men and some women slowly over time create such a hostile environment the victim fears for both their own and families lives. They can't admit their perfect life is a facade for fear of him doing more than knocking her tooth out. She would believe anything at this stage and unfortunately he knows that and it's her downfall. She plays the part beautifully being whomever she's meant to be in each part of her life, doting wife, caring animal welfare officer, great mum at the gates. All whilst knowing she sees no way out until a kind stranger comes along.

Give it to the end before you write it off. To me we were meant to see the double cross coming especially when he gave her the gun. I'm just surprised that house hasn't cameras in every room. She will be vilified but I see a twist coming. Great performance Joanna.

WTF??
evansp-3977715 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
WHat in God's name is the final episode about?? When was that CCTV footage of Olivier abusing Angela filmed? Did she know it had been filmed? How did she obtain it to show the police? Why hadn't the devious Olivier deleted it?? Am I going mad or is it the writers??

Don't give up!
igazova1 November 2021
I truly don't understand why all these bad reviews. This drama might start slow but I think it's the built up needed for next episodes. Plus it's all about physical and emotional abuse.

It has good twists and great cast.

So don't give up and keep watching.

I'm on episode 3 and was hoping it would be the last. Totally agree with other reviews, why didn't she just go to the police? Someone needs to die, and quick.

Suspense and surprises
ricoknight18 November 2022
Great character development, tight, suspenseful plotting and powerful performances all round. The lead actress sustains an intensity and authenticity across every episode, not easy considering what she goes through. Joanne Froggatt is so watchable- her detailed facial movements and presence convey subtle emotional pitches. I like the direction and use of location, the focus on the three of them creating a closed world that echoes the claustrophobic narrative. Nothing is wasted- no lull in the middle episodes, this builds to one hell of a climax that, true to form, avoids many of the cliches of the genre. Can you tell I liked it?

Waste of a good actress
andrewfirth-7558918 October 2021
Totally implausible, more holes than a fishing net in the plot. Joanne Froggatt is a really good actress but even she can't rescue this dire script, not a single believable character, giving up after the second episode, can't believe they've dragged it out to 6.

Good series lots of unexpected twists...
cherrybloomsales7 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I feel like Joanne Froggatt is great at playing the role of showing how people can be naive and afraid to leave relationships.. when they love someone. It also portrays how the man can easily lie and twist the truth. Great series and it's good to help and guide other young people or people of all ages its ok to leave when you're in an abusive couple.

Slow, so so slow
swkybyff25 October 2021
This could have been a 3 episode series and all the better for it. The idea is OK if a bit done to death, but the writing is just dull, unrealistic and assumes the audience are dull witted.

TV dramas seem to be getting more and more plodding at the moment.

I genuinely can't understand the bad reviews! I am a tough audience when it comes to TV shows like this, but this story line is gripping! Based on the first 3 episodes, I'd recommend it!

Stylish but so slow ...
sarahjetley27 October 2021
Is this the slowest drama on television? Three episodes in and still no further forward than episode one. Joanne Froggatt is a good actress but it's too similar to Liar. Overall it's too dull for its own good.

Fab Psychological Thriller
laurensette15 November 2021
Angela Black is a great, binge worthy psychological thriller that isn't what it initially appears to be with suspense and plot twists throughout.

I'm seeing a lot of bad reviews, but I'm honestly unsure as to why so many people hated it so much and found it so boring. It's definitely a slow burn, but not all shows need to be all action, all the time in order to get you in.

Angela is a woman in a physically and mentally abusive marriage who finds herself terrified to leave her husband or report his abuse to police (many people experiencing abuse don't disclose to anyone). One day she is approached by a mysterious stranger who informs her that he is a PI hired by her husband to follower her, and now her husband has gone one step further and wants her dead as well, in order to be rid of her and take their children. Out of fear for her life and due to the years of physical and mental abuse she has suffered, her next steps really make the plot thicken..

I shan't add spoilers, however I will say that this show is definitely worth watching til the end - especially if you enjoy a good psychological thriller.

I gave up caring about both characters early on
viviendostine29 October 2021
As much as I wanted to have sympathy for the main character I just could not get past her stupidity. I struggled on to episode 2, but when she said she was staying rather than walking away with nothing (err hello, heard of matrimonial property and or alimony?) Only to then conside4 murder...sorry, I'm out.

Well off, seemingly literate and well connected socially she is not, as the synopsis would have you think 'trapped' in this toxic relationship, she chooses. Then there's the eyer olling 'tension' as she creeps about the house at the most ridiculous times to catch her husband out, or make a pathetic attemot at leaving...spare me.

Angela may not be able to make good decisions, dont be like Angela. Dont invite this nonsense into your home.

Warning: Spoilers
Enjoyed this series. I really felt for the lead character with all of the emotional agony she went through. A lesson to all nasty husbands, so bloody well watch out if you are a cruel piece of work. The children were a bit annoying though. Don't understand all of the pompous reviews.

Not sure what the deal is...
TalulaGrey19 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'm two episodes in and I am wondering why she didn't automatically go to the police when Ed told her that her husband was going to have her killed. If a stranger came up to me and started telling me things about my husband, I'd go to the police. By the end of the first episode she's been told that her husband has already done away with one mistress and that it's Angela's turn to get bumped off. Why isn't she recording her conversations with Ed? Why isn't she going to the police? I'll give this one more episode but if she doesn't pull up her socks, I'm done. ** I've just finished the third episode and I knew that by the end of the second episode there was something wrong with Ed. In the third episode the husband forgot his briefcase at home when Ed had previously told her that "it never leaves his side." I knew that this whole thing was going to blow up in her face and it did. I can't give this series any more of my time. I give this a 2 for the atmosphere and the production values. Yes the acting is okay but the story is just so terrible.
