Season One Review
southdavid21 July 2021
I'll review this as season one, even though, at the moment a second season of the Channel four sitcom seems in the balance - as it's hard to say whether the well-received show has actually been well watched. Certainly, I enjoyed it enough to hope that there is more.

Amina (Anjana Vasan) a nerdy student agrees to join a punk band "Lady Parts" despite her physical aversion to performing in public. The band consists of Saira (Sarah Kameela Impey), Bisma (Faith Omole) and Ayesha (Juliette Motamed). Though musically talented, and with a line in witty songs, the band are struggling to find chances to perform and the women are individually struggling to match their passion for the band, against religious and cultural norms, as well as their personal lives.

"We are Lady Parts" is one of those sitcoms that in a years' time, I'm either going to be enjoying a second season, or will have forgotten about entirely. I enjoyed it, though if I'm honest it's the characters and the music that I found more memorable than any of the actual humour of it. The musical performances are really good, if I'm honest, they play too well to sound like an actual punk band and the music is a little more in the realm of indie rock, though with a punk sounding vocal.

The performances, whether singing or not, are really good. There is no real weak link amongst the main or supporting cast, though I'd like to single out Shobu Kapoor, who plays Amina's mother for particular praise.

As I said, I enjoyed it. If your concerned that the show is going to be particularly issues based, hand wringing about the plight of the modern Muslim communities, for example, then don't be. Religion is only a factor really when someone tries to use it against them. It's genuinely an amusing, character-based comedy, with the band having some sincerely good tunes (and one awful Queen cover). (Queen suck).

I found this program to be wonderful and feel good. I like the characters and diversity. Especially I appreciate the supportive parents of Amina. Deserves more notice. Glad to see a season 2 is coming.
