Miss old time movies
gshrak16 September 2022
I'm so beyond high school but I really like to watch movies that makes me feel I'm young again and miss it high school is always high school over the ages. Regardless of students high straighten close in the movie.

The movie's Idea might not be new, but it's well made not like same " high school " cheap nowadays movies.

I like how they portrait hatred, and how being busy destroying someone, can actually ends up destroying you or your future.

I have to admit that the costumes were incredible and colorful well designed and well wore, even though they are not usual high school uniforms but I would love to wear it

Well done and was nice to watch I highly recommend it.

Started off as fun and ended on a very questionable moral
cschmidt-4344418 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
First of all: This movie is very cheesy and I kind of liked that. It really captured the vibes of the movies it pays homage to. The dialogue and the acting are both pretty weak and over the top at times but I still enjoyed myself.

I really liked the little twist that starts off the third act revealing Eleanor as this damaged revenge thirsty bitch and I thought that was great. But unfortunately that's when the movie took a very problematic turn in it's moral.

The end of the movie basically leaves you with the message that it's okay to destroy other people's lifes ... as long as you're a female. I mean neither Eleanor nor Drea have to face actual consequences for what they did. Sure that Max was an asshole and he deserved the hate he got. What bothers me is that he is the only one who actually pays for all his wrongdoings.

Drea and Eleanor drugged a bunch of stundents - no consequences. They leaked privat messages that exposed an asshole but also a lot of other people (who may haven't been all that innocent themself but still a pretty toxic action) - no consequences. They made a girl who laughed about Drea's video (like basically everyone else) look like a drug addict and completely ruined her future, sending her to therapy and literally destroyed her - no consequences. Drea crushed Eleanor's self esteem and accused her of being a predator sending her to years of therapy - no consequences (at least none that lasted very long).

After all this stuff Max really looks like the nice guy here but in the end he's the big baddie of course. While Drea and Eleanor live happily ever after. Eleanor gets her girl back for whatever reason, Drea gets her boy back although she destroyed the life of a friend of him and drugged him. But all is forgiven because she wrote him a big I'M SORRY and that's it.

Drea even gets her chance back to go to her favorite college but to show the audience that she really changed she declines.

I really wish that this movie would've been more mature besides all it's cheesiness. It's not a movie you shouldn't take serious but treating all the toxic behaviour like it's something you just talk about to make it disappear (although they don't even talk about it with some people and still get out of their problems just fine) leaves a very bitter taste.

This movie could've been much better if our main characters actually would've face consequences for their actions but they didn't. Ironic, since this movie pays homage to Cruel Intentions and even features Sarah Michelle Gellar (best part of the movie btw) but the writers didn't seem to have understand the ending which actually shows the consequences for revenge and manipulation in a very good and profound way. If the ending of this movie would've been more inspired by Cruel Intentions it would've been so much better.

So in the end it's a fun movie with a big let down in the end and it's really sad because this movie really had more potential.

Stop casting people in their 20s to play high school teens
atlastu216 September 2022
I wanted to write this review, not to talk about the film itself, but the fact that the two lead actresses are in their 20s playing girls in high school, which is happening a lot in all the teen films these days, and honestly it ruins the whole experience. I just need to understand why this happens, i mean there are new talents discovered everyday, why do film producers feel the need to cast much older actors for roles that are clearly not right for them. I didn't really enjoy that film, didn't identify or sympathize with anyone in it. It had way too many twists and unrealistic things, so it stopped making sense to me. But i did like the soundtrack. One more thing this film is way too long for a teen comedy, I mean two hours, come one.

Pretty good watch if you aren't expecting it to be
AfricanBro29 September 2022
So I wasn't expecting to watch this but apparently it was a really good Gen Z movie so I was curious. There were scenes that weren't meant to be funny that I laughed at a lot. Also, not a groundbreaking concept discovery but different generations really aren't so different, just use different language and gadgets because about an hour in it stops being a Gen z movie and just a gaudy high school movie. At some point thought the movie was over but there was still a chunk of time left and it only got better with the twists, the last one not so much but it needed a happy ended. This may not start out as a movie for everyone but it is way better than I expected. It's a pretty good watch especially if you're expecting it not to be, reminds me of late 90's early 2000's teen movies.

All about Max and revenge
dbuckshnis29 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is confusing at first and then becomes clear in the Max diatribe at near the end. The show is totally high school rich teen spirit bull and all the puppy love, cattiness, and social media aspect of life. It's a movie about plans to tear down people and the wealthy aspect of living on parents money.

The set design is great as is the costuming. I loved all the very colorful aspects of the clothing.

Maya Hawke looks just like her mom and I was drawn to watching this show because of her naivety... and then she wasn't....

Overall, enjoyable and just another chick flick that finally shows what pigs rich men or sons of rich men can be ....

Colder the Better Apparently...
Xstal20 September 2022
Double crossing, double dealing, all the way, with treachery and betrayal the mainstay, you'll be swindled and hoodwinked, no time to ponder, or to think, the tables turning, bridges burning, with a large kink.

The desperate and despicable depths the ladies of Rosehill Country Day High School go to in their quest for one-upmanship, presented in a far from inelegant way that captures your attention and leaves you transfixed at their propensity to cheat, trick, deceive and mislead - in the most spectacular of ways and with very little concern for the consequences. I only wish things had been this exciting when I was at school.

Like, gag me with a spoon, all that drama, grody to the max.
Top_Dawg_Critic4 March 2023
If you're older than 19, this probably wont be for you. This is a movie for, and seems like it was created by, a bunch of high schoolers. It was your typical pretentious obnoxious spoiled teenagers in their typical environment. As a comedy, I don't think anyone laughed, but there were plenty of eye-rolls and cringes. The story was predictable, and even the twists weren't anything unexpected. Even with the decent pacing, the two-hour long runtime dragged out and felt like three plus hours. This film felt like it was outdated and something we've seen before many times. It's a generous 6/10 for the decent performances and cinematography.

fun teen movie
insaneular-2118618 September 2022
I don't expect much from Netflix teen movies these days, but this one exceeded my expectations. It has a target audience, so if you're outside of that, you might not love it, but it was a lot more enjoyable and had more surprises plot-wise than I expected. Plus some fun homages to 90s/2000s teen movies. Definitely a notch above a lot of other Netflix movies. There were moments I rolled my eyes and THOUGHT it was going someplace stupid, but then it went in a new direction that kept things interesting. If you're in the mood for a (slightly) dark teen comedy then this movie is a very solid choice.

This was fun (surprisingly)
kellydenton18 September 2022
So, I'm old enough to have watched Clueless when it came out. And it's precedent, The Heathers. The GOAT. And then, SMG?!!! The CI reference isn't lost me, but you gotta be a certain age to get it. It was also a classic. And I mostly picked this movie late tonight knowing I could make it stop with the flick of my remote if it sucked. But this was surprisingly fun. It was smartly done. And PLOT TWIST! That elevated it. Poignant. VERY poignant. And even as I write this yet ANOTHER plot twist! And I authentically laughed out loud more than twice. And the soundtrack was fun + I was a Peace Corps volunteer so loved the shout out. And when I googled a little on the movie I learned some interesting history. So for once, I didn't ruin my own Saturday night by picking a crappy movie yet again. Yay me.

You almost had me...and then the ending happened
codytheway20 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I was watching the movie thinking "yeah this is alright for a Netflix movie. Entertaining enough." And then the ending happened. Drea randomly exposes Eleanor as 'Nora' to the friend group. They all make fun of her for a minute and then Nora runs off crying and Drea runs after her to apologize. Like...why are you apologizing to a psychopath? Nora literally hit you with a car and put you in the hospital. She destroyed your future. She destroyed your social standing. Yet you felt bad for exposing her? And then you make up and become friends in the end? This was....beyond unrealistic. Who the hell forgives someone who purposely hit you with their car? The movie should have ended with Eleanor ending up in jail or in a psych ward because she is a certified psychopath.

Great homage to 90's teen movies
chelmold18 September 2022
We loved this. Like Clueless meets Cruel Intentions with some 10 Things I Hate About You and She's All That rolled in. They get backstabbing sabotaging teenaged girl relationships very right. All the crazy outfits were so much fun. The soundtrack was full of a great mix of modern music and 90's music. I loved that they included Sarah Michelle Gellar as the headmaster. Sophie Turner has a fun small part. I wasn't familiar with the younger actors, but I thought they all did a great job, no duds in this cast. I would definitely watch this again and I'd recommend it as a good time to anyone who has 90's teen nostalgia!

Not bad. not bad at all
ccrisss16 September 2022
I had very low expectations from the get-go considering most of the teen garbage shows netflix churns out. I also can't seem to tolerate high school movies or shows anymore. This one was surprisingly done right.

Teen tropes turned on its head, not so predictable, not so vulgar, plus excellent soundtrack and a great cast. Less cringey than most teen woke shows out there.

The whole revenge angle is also really cathartic at times and I was rooting for them the whole time. Not without flaws but hey, for what it is, I had a good time!

90s teen movies were really superior, but this almost has that same vibe, and it pays homage to some of my favorites. This to me is possibly one of the best teen movies in years.

Started like fun fluff...
ranwulfs24 September 2022
...but turned out so lost. Plot twist after plot twist, characters changing constantly, and I'm still not one hundred percent sure what finally happened in the end. This makes Sixteen Candles and a host of other 1980's movies look like high art. Adults playing teenagers is nothing new, but this time it was too much. Some of the scripted references were far too old to be even recognizable by the "kids" in the story. And let's talk about those kids for a moment, and how most characters were entirely miscast. The tall, gawky girl from Stranger Things should thank her lucky stars she's getting roles, because she's completely unconvincing as the newest hot girl in the high school. Not happening for a millisecond. And what's her name from Riverdale is certainly hot, but 10 or more years too old to play the role. And who's the short shrimp dude who's supposed to be everyone's dream come true? This guy is supposed to be the most popular boy in school? Does this day school have no jocks? Or perhaps no boys over 5'3"? Casting, people - casting. And it goes without saying that - of course - every bad person in the film is a man, and all of the good people are women (even if they did begin as borderline psychotics). The level of wokeness at first seemed tongue-in-cheek, almost a parody of Netflix's current political push. It wasn't. It was all over the place, as usual. Honestly, this film could have been 60 minutes, and it still would have gone on too long. It didn't know what it wanted to be, so tried to be everything. Hard pass, people - a hard pass.

Colorful teen movie with a twist
style-4277516 November 2022
Do Revenge is a solid teen movie that has some depth and intelligence while still being fun. Although not perfect, it's a great choice for a girls night or whenever you want something light-ish to pass the time.

The sets and costumes are really well done with some great color that I think make this movie a little more shiny and captivating than others. This is not a girl/boy next door teen movie, but focuses on privilege, revenge and friendship. There's also a bit more of an edge to this move that teen movies of the 90's and early 2000's don't have (it seems like everything has to be dark and edgy nowadays.) Nevertheless, Do Revenge is still light hearted with a 'good guys win' vibe where everyone learned their lessons.

Overall the acting and writing were solid, and this is one of the better teen movies that Netflix has come out with. There was minimal cringe and the script and plot were smart. Maya Hawke in particular did exceptionally well.

The story follows two girls who team up to ruin the lives of the people that wronged them. Do Revenge is full of twists though, and not everything is quite what it seems.

You can definitely see this as a Gen Z teen move, maybe. There are a lot of politically correct buzzwords- things are 'problematic,' 'misogynistic' and the villains are being 'fake-woke allies.' Lots of identity labels are thrown around. I guess if that makes a movie Gen Z, then so be it, but that's the main thing that made this movie feel like it was definitely made in the 2020's. It sometimes comes off as a bit overkill but it seems like in some sense the movie was being a bit ironic in its usage. Either way, I didn't mind it because the movie wasn't taking itself too seriously.

My main complaint is that some aspects of the ending gave me some whiplash and I think things were resolved a bit too easily. The movie isn't dark but there's a shocking moment or two but by the end those moments are swept under the rug which left me feeling a bit confused.

A good fun watch
gangeshgnair3 November 2022
This was a nice movie. I really loved the performance by both the leading actors. This is the first movie that i am watching staring maya hawke, and God she looks so much like her mother uma thurman. The movie really touches on some social issues in schools and of life in general, but saying that would be a spoiler. Amazing camera work and production design. The movie gives a 80s retro vibe, I liked it very much. The writing was nice, especially the plot twists were revealled very smothly and also impacts us to an extent. The music was nice, gave the movie a youthful vibe and was also fun to listen.

The issue I had with the movie is the climax. Felt a bit rushed. The issues got solved pretty quick. They could have improved the writing in the climax.

Delicious fun
exceladeogun9 May 2023
Do Revenge

It's been quite a long time since audiences have been served a high school comedy with so much style and sass, and Do Revenge quells that hunger adequately.

Paying homage to classic teen movies like Cruel Intentions (1999), Mean Girls (2004), 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) and Clueless (1995), Do Revenge paths down familiarity albeit with a fresh and colourful take. Do Revenge knows what it's about and doesn't stray away, it's all about delicious and dark fun, with several plot twists scattered around. The acting is spot on and the score just makes everything better. Should go on to become a teen movie staple

Rating: 7.5/10.

A 2022, 2000s vibe
madisonquince-4556116 September 2022
I actually loved this movie! It's very much a modern day clueless, cruel intentions and mean girls kind of film. It doesn't take itself too seriously and it's fun for a girls night. Everyone gives such a fun performance! Camila Mendes really delivered on carrying the movie and the rest of the cast did such a great job creating the world. Don't go in expecting a cinematic masterpiece but just enjoy a fun revenge movie with a glass of wine and some chocolate. I've been waiting for a fun movie to watch on a Friday night and I've found it! It's cinematically cool and gives a fresh take on a modern rom com/ revenge film.

It's all about La Maya
A_Different_Drummer16 September 2022
While millions of viewers worldwide were enjoying Netflix' top property STRANGER THINGS for the content, the movers and shakers in Hollywood were watching something else entirely. They were watching Maya Hawke, daughter of "La Uma" (Uma Thurman), demonstrating a mastery of comic timing and deadpan humor far beyond her years. This film is the result of that observation, a throwback to teen comedies of decades past, with "La Maya" getting a chance to strut her stuff. So how did she do? Pretty good overall. Maya held her own throughout, keeping in mind she got no help at all from a script so soggy it made MEAN GIRLS look like Oscar material. The trope where one student embarrasses another by making a public announcement was done to death. Austin Abrams was seriously miscast as Max; by the time the overlong 2 hour runtime is over, every viewer will have come up with at least three actors who could have done the role better. And the STRANGERS ON A TRAIN plot twist just added gravitas to a film that already had gravitas to spare. The future? More Maya. And better writing please. ((Designated "IMDb Top Reviewer." Please check out my list "167+ Nearly-Perfect Movies (with the occasional Anime or TV miniseries) you can/should see again and again (1932 to the present))

Worst movie I have seen in a while...
Tulip8822 September 2022
I have been searching for a no brainer movie to watch and relax not having to think much about it, saw Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke and thought why not.. Where to start? A 28 year old Camila playing a 17-year old, that just doesn't work, I like Maya but honestly if her parents weren't Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke ( one of the best and most famous actor of our time) would she really have a shot? To be in Stranger Things? To get any roles? I think not... Lets be honest: she is not a good actress.. Austin Abrams as the hottest and most popular boy in the school? I think not.... Couldn't remember where I saw him before, then googled and realised he plays the looser kid in Euphoria, seriously? A really small role for Sophie Turner, why did she accept this? I find it hard to believe that after Game of Thrones she isn't being offered better roles, it's just sad... the plot is all over the place, 10 times worse then Riverdale, the girls are really evil then good then evil then good again, the makeover for Eleonor (Maya Hawke) just isn't working... overall, a really bad movie. Netflix please do better, this is getting ridiculous ....

Mean Girls X Clueless X 10 Things I Hate About You.
chloecameron-576229 November 2022
I went into this film blind and Ive got to say it's so clearly inspired by Clueless, Mean Girls, 10 Things I Hate About You, and more teen comedies.

It's incredible. As a kid born in '96 the vibe of this film was SO cozy and familiar. It was like rewatching all my favourite teen comedies with the added bonus of hightened and modern aesthetics

I'm also so down for the queer rep and commentary on toxic masculinity and fake feminism. C'mon the 'cis hetero men championing female identifying students' committee. Hysterical.

As someone who loves to illustrate pop culture moments and movie scenes I am dyinnnng to take some from this film. The pastels ugh.

Also - what a plot twist.

Lacking..
ts-000020 September 2022
Could of been a decent premise, but felt rather underwhelming especially in spots.

Basically two teens, help get revenge on those who did them wrong.. But plot twist(one of the girls actually wanted revenge)on the girl she was helping.

Than soon after.. They make up,all is good in their world.

The end!

The revenge portions wasn't anything huge,or in your face.. Obviously this movie is geared towards teen to younger adults, maybe why didn't appreciate it.

Casting was fine, acting average & the cinematography was well done.

Unfortunately not a movie that leaves a positive impression,so won't be watching it again.

Unexpectedly cute on the side of Revenge
aislin247425 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Went in expecting at least a cheap version of Heathers but got the Cruel Intentions 2.0 vibe but without any deaths added in. Loved the croquet scene settled in the middle but the unexpected twist (there were several) were awesome if not a bit expected at times. I thought Drea would be the eternal mean girl. She was but she did it for the Revenge. Eleanor I thought would be the downfall but surprisingly saved the day. Camilla Mendes and Maya Hawke were amazing. The clothes were over the top and channeled Cluless. Short skirts, bright colors and sweaters even took me back to the jocks and cheerleaders in Revenge of the Nerds, a bit much. Overall not bad and filled with nostalgia.

Drivel
Shefhammer14 October 2022
Badly acted. Appallingly written. Complete and utter drivel from start to finish. They put 25 different ideas I to a blender and came out with this absolute train-wreck of a movie. The plot and tone of the movie veer violently from sentence to sentence, let alone scene to scene. Character motivations are non existent, nothing is real, the acting is absolutely atrocious - I know I said that already but it bears repeating. Do yourself a favor and skip this utter bore-fest. I think the budget went mainly on the soundtrack, which is quite good, but everything else is inept and I honestly think this is one of the worst things I have ever seen.

Too much Clueless for me
Fjlovie22 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I had a hard time getting into this movie! The similarities to Clueless was just too much and it felt like it was mocking all the movies I liked during my teenage years.

There was so much I disliked and that didn't work; I don't know where to begin! The movie itself felt mean and degrading & so much of the humor fell flat.

I went into it with very little expectations, yet it still only delivered on a couple scenes. One hour in is the best scene with Sophie Turner and I don't even think you need to watch the prior hour for context!

Maya is great. She carried the plot and all the emotions. Can't say I was impressed with the movie and my opinion is one of indifference.
