Better than I expected
Schrodingers_Cow8 May 2024
Good performances from Julia Roberts and Sean Penn. It was better than I expected from the IMDB rating so I think a lot of people are rating this lower for political reasons. Mostly told the story of Martha Mitchell, John Dean, and Gordon Liddy, which I didn't know too much about from watching other stories about Watergate. A lot of the the people are portrayed as incompetent buffoons. I don't know how much of that is realistic, but the comedic slant it added definitely added something to it's entertainment value that a more serious look would not have, so I liked it for that aspect of it, but also the storytelling aspect of more minor players I wasn't too aware of.

The Watergate scandal is revisited by exploring some of the minor players involved.

Martha Mason's (Julia Roberts) husband John Mitchell (Sean Penn) is the attorney general to President Nixon. Martha is a personality in her own right. The mouth of the south who is never short of gossip or an opinion.

John Dean (Dan Stevens) gets embroiled in a conspiracy to get Nixon re-elected. A murky operation with some flaky characters.

The first episode introduced the characters. Nixon and the Watergate scandal is a well trodden path. This offers Julia Roberts with Sean Penn under heavy makeup.

The first episode lacks the verve and agility of the recent Winning Lines which charts the rise of the LA Lakers from the late 70s onwards.

I thought the script was dull. The acting was good but it really needs to perk up the story.

Not an accurate portrayal!

Watergate was not as colorful as this series portrays, the G Gordon Liddy perspective is meant to belittle a man who may have had his faults but was a true American icon who isn't accurately portrayed.it appears this is based on a liberal bias and not factual circumstances!
