MaharathiMoser Baer, Rs 149Rating: **** Bollywood rarely succeeds with screen adaptations of plays. Even rarer is the genre of chamber-drama-as-thriller. The film version of Maharathi, a Gujarati play led by Paresh Rawal that's been staged since the late 1980s, is that exceptional effort which succeeds brilliantly on both counts. The plot twists around six characters – producer Jai Singh Adenwala, star-maker of a bygone era; small-time crook Subhash Sharma, who happens to save Jai Singh's life; Jai Singh's young wife Mallika; his selfish advocate A.D. Merchant; part-time house-sitter Swati; and assistant police commissioner Gokhale. To spite his gold-digging wife ‘Malli', Jai ...

Television channels are competing with each other these days. There's a scramble to acquire the Satellite Rights of feature films. The market, which was down till a few months ago, is piping hot right now and lucrative deals are being signed left, right and centre. The film producers/right holders, obviously, are smiling from ear to ear. In several cases, the price offered by TV channels is correlated with the performance of the film at the ticket window. If the theatrical business is fantastic, the returns are bountiful. In certain cases, the films are sold prior to their release, which works well for a film-maker since he recovers a big chunk of the investment much before the film has hit the screens and the verdict is out. Note the kind of money paid for the Satellite Rights:- Raajneeti - Rs. 25 cr. Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai - Rs. 10.5 cr.

Recently, a publication reported that actor Neha Dhupia had undergone botox treatment to get rid of laughter lines and other finer lines on her face. When asked, Dhupia flexes her facial muscles and says, “Look! I can move my face in seven directions! I’m a very organic person. I don’t even get hair extentions and fake nails — let alone Botox.” Asked whether she has finally switched from ‘oomphy’ to ‘meaty’ roles, Dhupia admits that making the transition from films such as Sheesha and Julie to Ek Chalis Ki Last Local and Maharathi hasn’t been easy. “But, ...

C grade skin flicks producer-director Yogendra Konkar was exposed in the court of law over his fake claim that he held the filming rights of Maharathi, the Gujarati play on which the Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision’s film by the same name is based.
Sources inform, “In the year 2000, Yogendra Konkar had sought permission from Uttam Gada, the writer of the Gujarati play Maharathi to use some scenes from his play in the film he (Konkar) was planning to make back then. It was a different matter altogether that Konkar never made any such film till today. In the meanwhile, Gada registered.

Paresh Rawal filmed his famous play Maharathi in a namesake movie and released it earlier this year. Now Manoj Joshi, his counterpart from the world of stage, too is bringing his own Chanakya back. However, filming for the play may just have to wait for a while as currently he is concentrating on reviving the play that was first staged close to 15 years back. Neha Dhupia is certainly on a reinvention spree. She had two successful films to her name early this year in the form of ‘Mithya’ and ‘Singh Is Kinng’.
Now soon after the release of ‘Dasvidaniya’, where she had a relatively smaller role to play though, she recently appeared in ‘Maharathi’. With the kind of films she is currently associated with, the ones where there isn’t a conventional hero-heroine pairing, does it indicate bye-bye to lead roles?
“Tell me if you see actresses anyways doing something special in.

Maharathi may have flopped but Paresh Rawal has always stood by the film's director Shivam Nair whom he believes has a 'modern approach towards story telling'."Though his Ahista Ahista hadn't done well, all those who watched the film had liked it. I too had seen the film along with some of my associates and we liked the way Shivam had treat the subject. Woh ek thehrav leke chalta hai rather than making things frivolous", says Paresh Rawal who had not just conceptualized but also got the entire project together....
