I think something's wrong with Mom
pinchers-5697121 July 2023
**Mom gets possessed by demon**

**Entire family and room full of neighbors standing there watching**

**Spine contorts to impossible shape**

"Mom? You okay?"

**Crab-walks up the side of a wall and onto the ceiling**

"Mom? Is everything alright, Mom?"

**Projectile-vomits twenty gallons of blood**

"Are you okay, Mom?"

**Speaks ancient language in hideous demonic voice, eyes rolling around in their sockets**

"Mom, it's me. What's wrong, Mom?"

**Grabs shard of broken glass, proceeds to dig it into arms and face**

"Mom, listen. I hope you're okay. You're starting to worry me."

**"I WILL MASSACRE ALL OF YOU AND FEAST ON YOUR GUTS. NO ONE WILL SURVIVE THE NIGHT. YOU ARE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!!!"**

"Mom, are you feeling okay? It seems like something might be wrong."

**Bites through neighbor's jugular vein, cackles maniacally while covered in the arterial spray**

"Guys, I think something might be wrong with Mom. I don't know, she's acting weird. What should we do?"

I can't explain why I didn't like this more
FeastMode21 April 2023
I haven't seen any of the previous Evil Dead movies. I judged this solely on its own merits. It's well made in many ways. It starts with a really cool opening scene that had my jaw dropped. And an epic opening title shot that reminded me of Fury Road's.

The entire movie is so loud and bombastic. You could say the same about the violence. It's brutal. I love that they take full advantage of the R-rating. It doesn't hold back. I liked all of the kill scenes and carnage.

So why didn't I like this more? I have no idea. I was having a decent time. But I wasn't fully engaged or attached. My mind wandered a couple times. I didn't care about the wellbeing of the characters. It doesn't feel like something I will revisit. There are a few dumb moments but nothing too egregious. I just wasn't that into it.

Exactly what it claims to be - gory, constantly hard-hitting and devoid of any fancy storyline
harrycollins12 April 2023
I just saw the film in a preview screening in London which featured a Q&A from director Lee Cronin.

I had high hopes for this movie given it's current 8.1 rating on IMDb and 96% on rotten tomatoes (albeit with only 26 reviews), and especially because I actually really liked the 2013 remake (which was not the best received by fans and critics alike). I would say that generally, it didn't disappoint, but it certainly didn't smash it out of the park for me either.

The good:
  • Gory, gory, gory. Wow. A gorefest, but somehow not overdone. It features a few massive gore moments that are memorable.

  • Modern day special FX make Sam Raimi from the 1980s sad he was stuck with playdoh and experimental techniques. The characters all look damn scary.

  • Acting was generally good. Nothing groundbreaking but Alyssa Campbell was fantastic (both when normal and, especially, when possessed

  • Sufficiently different from the original Evil Dead that it felt fresh and wasn't boring.

  • Considering all of the Evil Deads were in a cabin in the woods, this felt like a tough ask to feature the entire film in an apartment block. But the new world that was created was dark and gloomy, and certainly fit the bill.

The 'bad':
  • It's not an earth shatteringly different movie to ones you may have seen, meaning it's not going to "blow you away". It very much sticks to its lane paying respect to the Evil Dead and even the remake in some parts.

  • It is pretty predictable, which can be forgiven by the fact that it's more of a slasher than any psychologically disturbing film (I'd say the 2013 remake was more psychologically disturbing).

  • You probably do need to see the original Evil Dead or at least the 2013 remake for a lot of things to make sense (such as how the characters can 'transfer' the demonic spirit), although it's not mandatory.

I think in many ways this reminds me of M3Gan - it's not trying to be a groundbreaking film and reinvent the wheel, it's just testing a moderately new spin on an old Horror trope that doesn't claim to be pretentious. It tries to be something a bit fresh yet familiar, and to that end it succeeds like M3Gan generally did. It's using a cult Horror classic in The Evil Dead (with its classic plot devices and iconic scenes) and reimagining it with a new location, new characters, and a sxxxload of modern day special FX, so it's never going to get the critical acclaim of the original nor get any brownie points for raw originality - and that's ok! What is lacking in originality or a riveting storyline is made up for in gore and in-your-face moments.

In the Q&A Cronin said that even if you didn't like the film, you certainly weren't bored. I would have to agree with that and say that this film definitely will not bore. It will make you squirm in your seat at some of the attacks/kills and it may make you laugh occasionally too. I'd give it a 7.5, which rounds up to an 8 on IMDb for me.

Over a week out from the proper release of this film, my guess is that it does very well. It will settle around a 7.1/7.2 on IMDb, and gross around $200m (and, in the process, gross out a few people!)

Cronin fails to rise to the occasion.
BA_Harrison21 April 2023
After all the hype, the rave reviews, the revealing trailers, and the silly reaction videos (God, how I hate those), Evil Dead Rise turns out to be exactly what I expected: a serviceable sequel, nothing more, nothing less. Like the remake before it, it delivers on the gore, but is lacking in originality and likeable characters.

The film takes place in a rundown apartment building, home to single mother Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) and her three obnoxious brats, Bridget (Gabrielle Echols), Danny (Morgan Davies) and Kassie (Nell Fisher). After an earthquake hits the area, Danny discovers a secret vault below the building's underground car park where he finds an ancient book and three old records. Playing the discs unleashes an ancient evil that possesses his mother and spreads to other people in the building. On hand to protect the kids and fight the evil is Ellie's sister Beth (Lily Sullivan).

Writer/director Lee Cronin conducts matters in a workmanlike manner, ladling on the blood and slime, killing off characters that might reasonably be expected to survive many a horror movie, and throwing in a few nods to the original movies to appease long-time fans of all things Evil Dead (I particularly enjoyed the EDII flying eyeball scene); unfortunately, the film wastes its promising locale by confining most of the action to one apartment and doesn't generate much in the way of atmosphere or genuine scares (I didn't jump once).

What the film sorely needed was more imagination and creativity (in both story and direction), and characters that I could actually care about -- exactly the qualities that still make the original film the best of the franchise.

5.5/10, rounded up to 6 for IMDb.

Eyeball-Popping & Jaw-Dropping
Ellie is a single mother living with her three children- Danny, Brigit and Kassie- in a rundown apartment block. Her sister Beth- a guitar technician for a rock band- comes a-calling one evening. She's just discovered she is pregnant, and needs her sister's advice and company if she's to deal with the news. However, after an earthquake splits the floor of the apartment garage open- revealing an ancient bank vault- all hell literally breaks loose. Danny steals a book and a record from the vault, unwittingly summoning an army of deadites to their door, one of whom possesses his mother. Will Beth and the kids survive Ellie's undead machinations, or will the evil dead win the day?

Written and directed by Lee Cronin, 'Evil Dead Rise' is a wickedly bloody horror that is a worthy addition to Sam Raimi's iconic series. Though not as funny or as bizarre as the original three films, it is a good deal closer in tone to them than Fede Álvarez's comparatively bleak 2013 version, benefitting from bits of humour throughout. The narrative- once the first twenty minutes of exposition is out of the way- is engaging and full of cleverly implemented and inventive gore. Confined to one location, Cronin's game of deadite cat and mouse is thrilling and chilling in equal measure.

Conversely, other than Beth, all of the characters are quite one-note, with little development or backstory. The children are basically just plot devices with forgettable personalities and those outside the apartment are hardly more than shadows; ill-defined when examined under the light. Furthermore, despite a couple of unexpected moments, narratively 'Evil Dead Rise' is pretty linear and predictable. Though Cronin approaches gore with the hand of an auteur, he doesn't make his characters feel special or give us many compelling reasons to care for them. Ash Williams, none of them are.

However, on the other hand, the film really is an eyeball-popping, jaw-dropping display of bloodshed and carnage so over the top you can't help but be impressed. Cronin shares Raimi's spark for creative violence, and 'Evil Dead Rise' boasts some truly grisly scenes, involving all manner of objects. Cheese-graters, chainsaws and electrical wiring are but a few of the cleverly implemented items of destruction Cronin utilises to great effect in the film. And as in any good 'Evil Dead' project, there's a ridiculous amount of blood on screen- the karo syrup and red food-colouring budget must have been in the millions.

Under Cronin's direction, cinematographer Dave Garbett makes the most of the limited space of the apartment, capturing the brutality and carnage crisply and clearly. His use of f-stops and wide-angle lenses is immersive, while his dynamic camera movements add suspense and excitement. Garbett had cut his teeth on 'Ash vs Evil Dead,' and so was well used to capturing deadite violence and gargantuan blood levels on screen; as his consummate and assured work in the finished film shows. Additionally, the film relies on practicality over C. G. I., which makes the incredible effects throughout all the more impressive.

'Evil Dead Rise' features a fine cast, though some make more impact than others. Lily Sullivan does strong work as Beth, although the role is ultimately one-dimensional and lacking in personality. Gabrielle Echols, Nell Fisher and Morgan Davies face a similar fate, giving solid performances as bland, forgettable characters- though Fisher should be commended, really, given how young she is and how well she handles the material. The real stand out is Alyssa Sutherland, giving an intense, wildly entertaining performance as Ellie full of a diabolical vigour and energy. Scary, funny, crazy- not even Ted Raimi could have played this deadite as well, and that's saying something.

Although 'Evil Dead Rise' might not be in the same league as Sam Raimi's original trilogy, it's a roller-coaster of bloody chaos that's entertaining and exciting nonetheless. While the narrative isn't particularly special, director Lee Cronin's inventive use of gore throughout should have audiences enthralled. Furthermore, Alyssa Sutherland's performance as the villain of the piece is giddily over the top and utterly memorable, while Dave Garbett's cinematography is commendably stylish and the practical effects on display are awesome. To cut a long story short, 'Evil Dead Rise' is a frenzied festival of blood and guts that should leave viewers everywhere hungry for more.

Blood pouring and flesh grating abound, the reinvigorated new entry into the evil dead franchise works in depraved imagery, but lacks at times in storytelling and characters.
tresm8718 April 2023
Evil dead 2013 absolutely shocked me to the core when I saw it opening day in theaters. I wasn't a huge fan of the original 2, but that one struck me to where I watched it multiple times in the theater. Needless to say I was very intrigued at what this decade later film could offer. Luckily I was able to attend an advanced screening in my city.

The gruesome brutality is clearly what people flock to see in this franchise. Maybe somewhat of the wacky dark comedy a bit as well. This film takes a classic franchise and tries to brand it to the younger generation and it can be to a fault somewhat . At times it meanders within the rather plain story that we've seen in other possession films. All the while still providing shocking and disgusting sequences.

A great blend of CGI and practical effects still being utilized really holds the film up imo. The SFX work is also top notch . Unfortunately I cannot say that I enjoyed the cast and the way their characters are written. Sometimes it felt like more of a Netflix horror film based on the mediocre acting as well as the cliche writing. There are some moments that I cannot believe we're even put in an evil dead film . This is where a few times I was displeased. I get trying to relate to a newer generation but it was overkill.

Overall this film brings the blood and the scares and at the end of the day that's what people are there to see. I just can't help but think it's a dramatic downturn in quality from the 2013 film. If you're a fan of the franchise it's definitely a must see but I think there will be some mixed reactions.

Personally, I thought they did a good job.
TheMelancholySpirit10 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not the biggest fan of the 2013 movie, but I do really like it, I'd give it a 7/10 to 8/10. Then there's Ash vs Evil Dead, which I love. Then, of course, the original trilogy - which I absolutely adore. Especially II and Army of Darkness. I think I'm one of those people who likes Army of Darkness the most, actually. Now, there's a fifth film, so how is it? Personally, I enjoyed it - it ranks fourth out of the five movies. I'd give it a score of 8.2/10 thus beating the 2013, which, again, I really like. This one was mostly enjoyable, I believe, thanks to the cast and the cinematography, and the third act, which in itself was very gory and had some startling moments. This is by far the most brutal of the five films, and I thought its use of humour back and forth was fitting, yet, not quite as good as the way it's done in the originals. The two lead women performances were excellent. The three kids, the oldest daughter and the son, they're pretty good actors, I'll give them credit. But the best performance of the three, to me, was the youngest daughter, she did a terrific job and it's admirable given I believe she's maybe only 10 years old, if that. She is gonna be a star. Going back to the lead roles, most people are saying the standout is El, but to me, it's Beth. They're both superb, but Beth was such a good protagonist. The cinematography was at times splendid and nearly impeccable. They did a terrific job there, very well done, some excellent shots. The film is straightforward and quite, considerably, short - merely 96 minutes. I'd have made it 110 or something, just so there was a few extra details and nuances and moments, but at 96 minutes, still, it's a solid entry into the Evil Dead universe.

Good directing, decent enough dialogue, tons of gore, tremendous camera work, and good acting all round. The opening is also awesome, and its title reveal, much like everybody else has already said, is magnificent. Only issues I have are the aforementioned runtime, which in itself is fine, I just sort of wish it were that bit longer, and the rest of the actors, or, well, lack thereof. There were so few people, it could have added some more and even a few more background characters just to give it that extra but if depth and presence. And the opening, well, afterwards when it takes us to Beth at El's home, it could have been 10 minutes less, focusing more on other things, or those ten minutes be rather, say, 20-25 and it being more action and struggles and such. But I have to say, I'm pleased with this overall and I enjoyed it. It's a very enjoyable experience especially if you're a casual fan but love gory horror, but the diehard fans will either love it or find it okay/dislike it. I expect division there. Most people will like it though, I suspect. Anyway, yeah, it's a good one. Go enjoy it.

Only spoiler: the scenes with the fused together end villain were very cool and quite freaky, well done. It is reminiscent of other good horrors or sci-fi horrors.

My First Evil Dead Movie
TharsheyN19 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I only now realize after watching the movie that it's the 5th installment in a franchise which even has a tv show and a video game, which I have actually seen on steam.

Evil Dead Rise, takes place in a single apartment building with a mom, her 3 kids and her sister. There are also a few neighbors but well you'll see what becomes of them.

In terms of story Evil Dead Rise doesn't have much of one, it's very simple and straightforward and doesn't even give you time to formulate an opinion on the characters before they start dying off. That being said the rest of the story is earthquake happens, boy finds book of dead, opens it sees creepy images and decides to keep on going through it and even listening to old vinyls with creepy priest. Demon comes and people start dying and that's about it.

Still don't know why characters in these movies can never have any actual common sense or brainpower but will still sit there waiting and watching the evil entity or spirit or go into the dark, scary room. Like I get you need a story to unfold but I bet you can make a pretty good one even while have sane, rational, intelligent characters. Anyway enough about that, movie has a simple story but hell it works and it's enjoyable and that's whats important.

Casting was pretty good actually, even though I have no clue who any of the actors and actresses were. The mother makes for a cute mum turned demon possessed killer and the kids all do pretty well playing kids turned dead demon possessed bags of flesh. The sister probably is the most important of the human characters and she does her job pretty dang good. Even when you see her niece use a cheese grater to scrape her flesh of her arm. So props to the cast for a good job and the casting director for picking a good cast.

The VFX and SFX are where the movie truly shines, you will see blood and gore everywhere. There are heads being torn off, people being stabbed, an insane amount of blood being used and shown on screen, scalps being ripped off and every manner of sick, icky thing you can possibly imagine. Absolutely wonderful job on the special effects and the sounds.

Overall a 7/10 for me, I loved the special effects, the sounds, the massive amounts of blood and the cast. The story was enjoyable but really nothing special though I'm definitely interested in now going back to watching the other 4 Evil Dead movies and even trying out the game.

You get exactly what you pay for
ykjdh18 April 2023
Fans of the evil dead movies will love everything about this one. There's blood and gore along with some scary stuff thrown in there to creep you out.

I was a little bummed though there's still no Ash in this one but I still enjoyed it.

The evil dead movies have left the woods and bring their bloodthirsty spirits to Los Angeles in an apartment building where a woman is raising her kids alone. One of the kids finds the book of the dead and decides messing around with it is a good idea. Enter the younger sister of the single mom who plays pretty much the go between trying to hold the family together once the kid finds out things should be left alone for a reason.

There's some good, gooey make up effects and some thrills here. You've seen it all before but even fans of 1986's Dario Argento's Demons movies might even recognize a little homage here. Anyhow, you get your money's worth here but for originality I recommend Nefarious instead. Still, this is a bloody (literally) good time.

Escalating Evil...
Xstal14 May 2023
An earthquake opens floors to things long hidden, where a book that's bound with skin should be forbidden, but curiosity is a curse, the night progressively gets worse, as the residents of this block become quite stricken. It's soon apparent that a demon's been released, for naïve souls the evil's risen and will feast, as it possesses and retains, takes all your mind, controls the reigns, as it conjures you into, sadistic beast. To be fair, against the odds, a fight is given, as apartments are sprayed red, with blood they're riven, a chainsaw you'd expect, deployed with passion to dissect, although most living at the start, go to perdition.

You've seen it all before.

I can't explain what's missing here...
jkanecoleman24 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I hate writing this review, because I feel like maybe I missed something here, but I didn't love Evil Dead Rise

The film starts off with a great opening scene then goes back a day prior to explain what is occurring. I really like the setting of this being in an apartment, as it gives the film more dread. I also love how the children give a back story/urban legend explanation then find the hidden book in a really cool way. I guess I wanted more if this back story, as it's really cool.

The movie then goes pretty break neck and carnage ensues. The character development isn't great, so I didn't really care that they were all in this awful situation. The acting is good for sure, especially the mother, she makes the film.

There's a lot of blood in this flick, and maybe I watch too many horrymovies, but I wanted this to be more brutal with gore. Blood and gore are different to me, just to clarify. Anyway, when I found out this was initially made to be released via streaming, it made more sense.

I think there's a good movie in here, but it fell flat for me. I loved the 2013 reboot, so maybe my expectations were off. I guess you could do way worse for a fun time in theaters, but to end "I'm not mad, just disappointed".

Pretty good for the most part
jtindahouse19 April 2023
The older I get, the harder I find it to buy into these supernatural style horror films. I just don't believe it basically, and so I sit there and don't feel any kind of fear or tension whatsoever throughout the movie. Robert Ebert once said however, it's not what the film is about, it's how it is about it. And looking at the film through that lens, it was pretty darn good.

I say that I don't find these types of movies scary, but I can confirm the woman sitting beside me in the theatre certainly did. She was sitting right forward in her chair, audibly gasping throughout the movie, covering her eyes and even gently rocking herself at one point. It's a small sample size, but if she represented the general public then I would say this movie has the ability to deliver some tension.

I thought the setting for the movie was well done. It's pretty hard to pull off an inner-city apartment building and make it feel isolated and like help is a long way away, but the film achieved just that. These people really do feel stuck where they are and escape is not an option.

There's a trope creeping into horror movies more and more which is to make one of the lead characters a pregnant lady. The theory of course being that a pregnant lady is going to have the audience extremely worried about her fate. Ironically, I think it drags a lot of the tension out of the movie. There isn't a major studio in existence that would let something truly bad happen to a pregnant woman. I'm always very disappointed when I see a horror movie introduce a character this way.

There's certainly plenty of gore. Apparently 6,500 litres of blood were used to make the film and when you see it you won't be left wondering where it all went. For what this was I have to say I had a pretty good time with it. 8/10.

Evil dead has lost its identity.
ghalion_rabbit26 April 2023
Good as a horror but!

If your expecting an awsome horror comedy.

Then this is not the movie for you.

Like the evil dead remake. They did away with the comedy for a more serious take on the evil dead formula. And as a result they missed the mark.

And sad to say as an evil dead the movie fails.

And offers almost 0 laughs

But it is a decent demonic horror gore fest.

And as a lover of supernatural horror I can appreciate that.

But I went hoping for an evil dead. And that's just not what I got.

The characters are OK, the effects were great. The story slightly better than generic.

Lighting good.

In short it is a good movie. But!

In the end evil dead is a horror comedy franchise. And this was all horror with little to no comedy.

Rise but no Shine!
Darkside-Reviewer21 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I went into this Evil Dead film with low expectations especially after being disappointed by other recent horror movie sequels like Halloween Ends, Scream VI and Hellraiser (2022). My expectations were apparently not low enough though as I was thoroughly disappointed by this movie.

This new addition to the Evil Dead universe is easily the most tame and least frightening of the franchise. The original Evil Dead trilogy starring (Bruce Campbell) was the perfect mix of horror, dark humour, excessive levels of gore and a likeable lead character who tied it all together with the help of his chainsaw and boomstick. Even the (2013) Evil Dead reboot movie had some fun and interesting ideas which while not anything particularly ground breaking still gave fans a ton of gory kills and passable enough characters that don't leave you with a headache between their deaths.

Evil Dead Rise fails to bring anything original or even of any value to the Evil Dead franchise. The main cast of characters are mostly teenagers who are written as mere plot devices to move the story forward. A good example of this is one particular character wants to become a DJ so he has a record mixing turntable set up in his room. This is the characters defining characteristic which exists so he has an excuse to play a record of a priest reading a passage from the book of the dead raising the deadites. That's all the character development there is for this character until he dies. The other main characters have very little back story or defining characteristics other than they are all related to each other.

The deadites in this Evil Dead movie are tame in comparison to the previous Evil Dead movies and the TV series. The lead deadite shown in all the trailers for the movie is the mother of the child characters in the movie and we watch as she becomes possessed and hunts her family down to turn them into deadites aswell. Unfortunately however the lead deadite spends most of it's time on screen screaming incoherently, falling over or saying cheesy one liners. When the killing does begin there are some moments that are fun and gory such as a deadite eating a guys eyeball out of his eyesocket only for it to be followed by something as stupid as her spitting the eyeball out and it just so happens to land in another characters mouth choking him to death in a shot that looks less Evil Dead and more Tales from the Crypt. This was clearly an attempt to copy a similar scene from Evil Dead 2 only without the dark comedy that made the scene work in the first place.

The special effects range from practical effects mixed with CGI that look surprisingly well done if not entirely original in design to a CGI mess that looks so unrealistic and fake it takes you right out of a scene that's supposed to hook you in with its suspense.

The absolute worst thing about this movie however is that it takes place in a run down appartment building filled with other tenants but only the people on the top floor of the appartment building are attacked by the deadites or are even aware of the chaos that goes on in the building over just one night. In the span of a few hours the building is affected by a significant earthquake that literally cracks a hole in the buildings foundations, the elevator gets filled with blood and destroyed flooding the elevator shaft and the ground floor with mass amounts of blood, the stairs in the building are completely destroyed, there are screams and even gunshots in the building at least ten people die and through all of that the other people in the building just simply don't let it interrupt their fine evening at home. This might seem like an odd thing to point out but the movie even shows a character who lives in the building the morning after the massacre saying they had trouble sleeping due to a thunder storm that night nothing else just the thunder not the mass murder or anything.

I really don't recommend paying to watch this movie in cinemas it really isn't worth the price of a ticket to watch a movie that is only worthy of being on a streaming service like Hulu or Shudder at best. The movie insults Evil Dead fans by simply doing just the bare minimum necessary for it to qualify as an Evil Dead movie.

The reviews for Evil Dead Rise say things like "Overwhelmingly scary" and "The best Evil Dead since the original" whoever wrote these reviews have either been paid to praise this movie or they have never seen a horror movie in their entire life and are the kind of people who would get scared watching a Paranormal Activity movie.

Creepy and Gore Night
claudio_carvalho1 July 2023
When the sound technician Beth (Lily Sullivan) finds that she is pregnant, she travels to Los Angeles to stay a period with her sister Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland). When she arrives by surprise at night, she learns that Ellie has divorced her husband Jay and is living alone with her three children, but they need to move from her apartment since the building is condemned. Ellie sends the children Bridget (Gabrielle Echols), Danny (Morgan Davies) and Kassie (Nell Fisher) to buy pizza for dinner while she talks to Beth about the news. When they return, there is a severe earthquake that opens a hole on the bottom of the garage. Danny finds a creepy book and three vinyl discs in a vault and brings with him in his backpack. When he listens to the two first records, he summons an evil force that possesses Ellie in the beginning of a creepy and gore night of terror.

"Evil Dead Rise" (2023) is a good horror movie from the franchise "Evil Dead". The plot returns to the first two movies by Sam Raimi, with violence and gore and no jokes or funny situations. The atmosphere is frightening, in an abandoned building with a few dwellers, and the make-up and special effects are horrifying. The beautiful Alyssa Sutherland is seeing without any glamour and scary make-up. The beginning of the film indicates that the franchise will not stop and a sequel will come. My vote is seven.

My least favorite Evil Dead movie
catherinemalvin22 April 2023
While my least favorite Evil Dead movie, not a bad movie. I think this movie is pretty ok. I liked the cinematography, the setting, the two female leads are acted very well. The practical effects are pretty good and gory, but not as creative or used as much as previous Evil Dead movies. The pacing was a bit slow in some places. I felt it took too long in some places were I felt more should have progressed a little quicker. More should've happened between the characters a bit more so the emotion connection between the characters and the audience could've been stronger. The ending was the best part for me.

Im scared of the family now!
AvionPrince1620 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Im pretty surprised of the movie to be honest. Yes the plot is kind of predictable, sometimes too much jumpscares, pretty classic overall but..... the ambience, the atmosphere, the work arround the lights, the mood, some camera movements really made us uneasy. The movie start in a normal way and make it pretty clear from the beginning: there will be blood and not a little. The gore didnt really bothered me and really just feel natural because of the paranormal event and that sister who turn into a monster. Like i said the plot is pretty classic: they discover a book and after they opened it with listening to an audio about demonic stuff the monsters will appear. I really loved the transformation of the sister into a monster and find the make up really effective and really make us scared by her look. The movie its more a survival horror than a psychological horror. The characters are not that deep in term of background but there are interesting enough to make us want them to succeed for sure. I enjoyed also the story behind the ritual and that man who explained what happened after they opened the book: it really make us want to understand and how they can deal with that problem. The end let us think that it will have maybe a next movie? It really look like they prepared something else for a next movie but not sure for now. Like i said i really enjoyed it and found it pretty entertaining and the shots, the mood, the ambience, the plot really entertained me during the whole movie. A nice surprise.

A Worthy Addition To The Evil Dead Legacy
watch_or_not20 April 2023
As a massive fan of the original trilogy along with the 2013 sequel and the Ash Vs Evil Dead series. I was quietly holding my breath that this would be faithful to the storyline while having the gore and tension of the sequel.

I was not disappointed, once the book is found, it's non stop. The makeup and sound department went above and beyond to bring fans a hell of a bloody ride.

I can understand that it won't be for everyone, but if you are a fan of old school body horror you will have a great time. In a world full of CGI and green screens, it was a pleasure to sit and watch practical effects and sets used perfectly. A great addition to my favourite franchise and I hope they get to make more.

Okay on it's own but disappointing compared to earlier Evil Deads
leiram453 March 2024
I really liked Evil Dead 1 and the 2013 version. The acts/sections were good, overall they were solid, and had scary moments especially the 2013 one. I was expecting this to be the same level or near it, but it was not. It's okay on its own, but just break-even compared to the films in the franchise I watched.

Maybe I just expected much. Some of the kills/gore were good but it isn't really a big criteria to films that aren't slashers, and to me personally. Some of the acting were wanting, too, and the main characters weren't presented in a way where you'll really root for them. The kid was cute and I wanted the lead to survive because of her baby but there was just something missing with these characters. I think I cared for the neighbors more, actually.

The setting also was kinda weird. Cabins and the woods just match seamlessly with these types of stories. How and where they discovered the book and recordings were questionable, too, but that was something a viewer can let slide. Like the other reviewers here, there was just something missing for me, or maybe it was just insufficient in a lot of areas.

It's not bad. It may even be good for someone whose first film in the franchise is this. It was just pulled down by high expectations.

Tedious
jfgibson7321 May 2023
I was disappointed. The Evil Dead movies always had simple stories, but this one feels like there is even less going on than usual. A family gets trapped in a building and deadites stalk them. Nothing really creative or memorable happens. I didn't even feel any tension, let alone actual fear. It really seems like the wrong person made this movie--I don't think they know what makes a good horror movie, and they definitely don't deserve to helm an Evil Dead movie. It's more like a low-level slasher sequel than an entry in one of horror's more consistent series. Also, the callbacks were lame. And as for the big finale? It was done better in the recent Color Out of Space. Very skippable.

As a horror movie fan this
lovesoulmusic11120 April 2023
This is something I haven't seen in years! It's exactly what a die hard horror movie fan needs. The exorcist, The Exorcism of Emily Rose just w/o the priests. This movie deserves all the hype! I didn't experience this type of scary in a very very long time! It keeps you on the edge of your seat and makes you want to look away till you just want to get out of the theater and go home, highly recommend just be prepared to take it home with you haha.

If you're just looking for a horror movie to watch and you aren't used to it be careful because this movie is just insane in every way possible!!!!!

Some creative elements but missing something
bwkuettel5 March 2024
The much-anticipated new Evil Dead film finally arrived a full 10 years after the surprisingly decent remake starring Jane Levy. Rise features a new characters and setting, essentially being another reboot with the unfortunate absence or even acknowledgement of her character, whose fate remains unknown after surviving her possession and escaping the dreaded cabin.

For the first time, an Evil Dead story does not take place in a cabin in the woods but in a creepy LA apartment building. Despite most of the characters having a suspicious trace of Australian accents and brief shots of some shrubbery that I don't think grows anywhere in the United States.... But anyway, while the prospect of a new setting for Evil Dead shenanigans seems like a fresh idea, I don't find the ancient supernatural demons and zombies being summoned to invade this drab, modern building succeeding as well as it might've seemed on paper. It could've worked better if it was a sleek, clean, modern apartment complex instead of having the usual flickering lights, dingy areas, and collapsing structures that many horror movies utilize. But on the positive, it does provide some neat horror sequences that would be otherwise not possible in the tried and true cabin in the forest setting.

Despite no continuation of Jane Levy's character from Evil Dead, the leading lady, Mia, gets possessed and serves as the main antagonist and highlight of the film. The actress fully commits to embodying the essence of a scheming, unrelenting deadite gleefully chasing her poor family throughout the general area with various found weapons and nasty taunts. Despite these positives and some very creative sequences and camera perspectives, including one which all takes place through the view of a doorhole, the first half is kind of a slog. The typical setup of how the deadites are conjured is essentially the same as always, with an unassuming character coming across one of the cursed books, curiously opening it, and innocently reading its contents, thereby opening the door for the demons to come through. Cue the unhinged freak show of carnage and gore that everyone paid their money to see.

Director Lee Cronin turns out to be a solid fit for the franchise, despite his debut feature being a wholly different affair: the atmospheric, slow-paced, gothic horror film The Hole in the Ground. While he brings a fresh visual flair to this latest Evil Dead, the unimaginative script is limiting. These characters are hardly any more interesting than the mostly bland cast of Evil Dead 2013, and a misguided and ultimately pointless wraparound story that shows the infamous cabin with unrelated characters who all end up dead anyway that just shows the curse spreading from the apartment building back to its original setting? I think? In any cause, it's pointless and diminishes the overall experience. There is also a lack of surreal sequences that were present in the original trilogy, such as when Ash put his hand through a mirror and it's water, or the lightbulb filling with blood. They attempt one or two half-hearted comedy antics like in the Sam Raimi ones, which stick out when the rest of the movie is so grim and menacing.

With the announcement that the producers are considering making Evil Dead a consistent franchise with a new movie every few years, this doesn't really make a strong case for that idea. Despite delivering on the characteristic gnarliness and featuring excellent directing with some truly impressive sequences on a technical level, Evil Dead Rise at the same time feels too stuck in its ways to stand out or surpass previous entries in the franchise. If they are going to make a follow-up, I would say it really needs to reinvent the wheel beyond just changing up the main setting and actually incorporate some bizarre qualities and more humor in the spirit of all the Ash-starring movies and recent series. Evil Dead Rise may not succeed on all levels, especially regarding the plot, but is still impressive in a number of ways and lives up to the mighty Evil Dead mythology. If they do make a follow-up, it should star Mia, Ash, and Beth teaming up!

A Disappointment
statuskuo21 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A valiant effort was given to reboot a franchise to which I stopped watching after the original 3. People would consider that canon and the rest just derivative. I've not seen the others though I've seen clips and they seem very anemic. When the original popped onto the screen, it was done with such low rent glee and raw force by director Sam Raimi, that the audience felt the craft behind the filmmaker. Here, the movie is polished to a gloss.

The story is of two sisters, one who returns back to Los Angeles to meet up with a distanced sister who has three kids. L. A. Sister supplements her living with presumably tattoo artistry (how hipster of them). The three kids are aged 14 to 6 (I think). They have their own idiosyncrasies. One seems to want to be a DJ. One is a gothy girl who seems to have questions of her sexuality. The youngest is a tow-headed blonde who is movie adorable. All seem to be oblivious to their lot in life. Which is fine, since L. A. Sister is about to be evicted from her re-purposed old bank home. The production design here probably requires another look to see the neat former bank things.

Clearly this isn't Los Angeles, since it rarely rains. Here, it is pouring.

Any way, the building also seems to house random oddballs but kind ones which seem to fit L. A. Sister and her sleeves of tattoos. Groupie Sister who visits has been away following a band of some kind. Not sure the estrangement and you never get a sense of why their distance, but it doesn't play. Never mind that, because there is an earthquake that opens the Earth to a hole in the ground in the garage. Where the Son (presumably the oldest) goes down and finds...The Book Of The Dead! Seems this should be the reveal in which legacy viewers, such as myself, throw up their hands in excitement. Nope. Fell flat. And also, what ultimately happens to them doesn't have that sense that they deserve such brutality foisted upon them. It felt cruel. There should've been a pause of humanity between sisters before the chipper took her out (what's that doing in an apartment parking lot in L. A.?)

The incantations are read through some vinyl that the Son finds. Since he is a DJ, naturally he plays it which awakens the book. Chaos ensues. And...boy was I bored.

The L. A. Sister is possessed. And then attacks her family. I want to believe that the moviemakers here wanted us to feel the dread. Not really. I felt the people were too dumb to figure out that the grey skinned person is obviously out to kill them. Most notable irritating person is the littlest Blonde kid. Man was she obnoxious. Having seen her Mom die, resurrected THEN kill everyone in the hallway, naturally she wants to open the door. Ugh.

The Groupie Sister sustains horrific violence on her and yet...things like having a glass shard through her hand doesn't have her react that much. Or having a cheese grater across her calf just gives her a limp. If this were done as camp, I would love it. But the music and their reaction doesn't indicate that. It falls flat. The characters reactions to ANYTHING seemed misplaced or just flat out wrong. You see supernatural things, you expect the characters to run. So many stick around and you just wish the demons would just end them all.

The Goth Daughters multiple deaths and attempts to kill seem like it should be more fun. Having the broken end of a wooden pole go through her throat seemed like a good idea, but they linger on her removing it that I grew bored...again.

Perhaps I'm just more charmed by the low-fi version of the originals. And the terrific mugging of Bruce Campbell that this felt less like a "Evil Dead" flick and more like a standard Blumhouse B. S. To be clear, I also didn't watch any of the television series. Any and all of them.

I wanted to feel a tinge of nostalgia for the Sam Raimi touch. You saw a little of that in the last "Doctor Strange" flick. Here, they elected to go very by the book.

While it's true they can't keep doing "Cabin In The Woods" level nonsense (in fact, they fool you into believing that is what was going to happen). The ideal of a metropolitan area where the entire building has zero foot traffic is a hard leap of logic that is too much to bear.

The concept was good, but it doesn't surprise me that this was originally suppose to be straight to streaming. It felt like it. While the effects were solid and the gore was plentiful it still felt REALLY cheap. Perhaps not having any stars gives that impression.

I knew what I was expecting going in, and purposely lowered my standards ahead, but it still did not prepare me to be so disappointed.

Was really let down
wolfhawk-8231123 April 2023
I waited for nearly 2 years for this movie and was very excited going in. The intro was fantastic, so I had high hopes. Then the first half of the movie was a slog. I was getting exhausted by it.

The second half was pretty good, but I was checked out at that point. The Mom and Aunt were great, but the younger actors weren't very believable. The Mom was so good, though, that she basically saved the movie.

The CGI was obvious and the movie could have relied on more practical effects. I loved the first 4 entries in the franchise, and this one doesn't live up to them.

Side note: there are quite a few political statements that grinded my gears as well. May or may not annoy you.

Not terrible, but not great either.
jwpompeii-6512521 April 2023
I blame myself for having such high expectations for this one. I thought with it being in an apartment complex in stead of the woods I was really hoping for a Rec moment of them fighting from floor to floor trying to escape, but the setting really didn't do much for the story at all. That and the gore seemed to be dialed back a bunch from the last Evil Dead. Like instead of a slow painful burn, things just happen so quickly and in quick succession that it doesn't hold much impact. My only other gripe is there's no real memorable or quotable scenes unlike all the other Evil Dead movies. Just finished the movie and can't remembery favorite scene.
