A new kind of Adult Movie
davidgee30 June 2022
A widow 'of a certain age', Nancy (not her real name) books a hotel room and a fit young sex worker, Leo Grande (not his real name). Nancy never had an orgasm during thirty-one years of married life, so she has some catching up to do.

Emma Thompson's performance and Katy Brand's crisp script convey very believably the awkwardness and nervousness Nancy feels. Take out the sex and nudity (please don't!) and this could have been written by Terence Rattigan to be played by Deborah Carr back in the 1950s. There is a degree of theatricality to the film, although Thompson gives her all and courageously bares her all.

Daryl McCormack matches Thompson for both bravura and skill as the young escort who's not as self-confident as he pretends. More explicit even than Netflix's SEX EDUCATION, this is not a movie for porn perverts, it's a serious study of desire, disappointment and desperation. Both its stars deserve to pick up awards next winter.

A courageous performance by Emma Thompson
sciencguy18 June 2022
Why did I have to stumble upon this movie on Prime instead of seeing critics tout it on their platforms? A bravura performance by Emma Thompson in a 'small' character-driven movie that makes every superhero or thriller film look amateurish by comparison. Maybe I'm just partial to intelligent dialogue and rational, original plots. I have to wonder what Thompson's thought process was in deciding to take on this role. It can't have been easy for her, at age 63. Courageous! Daryl McCormack turns in an outstanding performance as a sex worker whose gentle professionalism and sensitivity is meant to set the retired teacher at ease. Highly recommended!

An Empirically Fine Two-Hander Focused on Self-Love
EUyeshima18 June 2022
Emma Thompson gives a very brave performance as a repressed sixtyish widow who decides to hire a professional escort to make up for the unfulfilling sex life she had when she was married. Fueled by Thompson's spiky intelligence and keen timing, it quickly moves from a comic exploration of female sexuality into an honest depiction of self-love and what prevents us from getting there. That dynamic also includes the escort (portrayed with polished compassion by Daryl McCormack) who unapologetically does his job on regular time-stamped appointments. Except for the appearance of a minor character late in the movie, this is a two-hander (sort of speak) that runs only 97 minutes. However. Katy Brand's perceptive screenplay and Sophie Hyde's sensitive direction manage the brevity with ease by highlighting the two stellar performances at the movie's core.

The Therapeutic Gigolo...
Xstal9 November 2022
It's time to take the plunge, and try stuff out, for years you've been unable to, checkout, so you're hiring a man, a metaphorical kind of fan, to raise a flame of which you have, a little doubt. When you meet it all seems like a bad idea, you're quite anxious, with a little bit of fear, should he stay or should he go, there are things you want to know, so you talk a lot, it's all very sincere. Extra couplings are arranged over the weeks, finding more than what you thought you had to seek, it's a therapeutic weave, and you finally achieve, to walk away as if you've just started to peak.

An engaging and rewarding tale of bravery and honesty about who you really are, and what you want.

Amazing
quietneeded17 June 2022
I totally think Emma Thompson should win an award for this movie. This movie touches on very very delicate subjects that we don't like to discuss. Especially about older people who want to still feel sexual and alive. They're able to take a very delicate subject and turn it into an enlightening one. Especially about people over 40 who don't ask for what they want because they don't think we should. She is one brave woman to take on this role!!

Only Connect

So well acted. In the hands of clumsy performers, this script would be horrifying. But it wasn't and so it isn't. When we want sex there are always other hungers, other flavors that we desire. A widow seeks adventure, a sex worker seeks affirmation, perhaps praise that was never freely given. All in all a "feel good" movie in more ways than one.

Surprisingly Refreshing
HelloBlockbuster17 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, I've *never* seen a movie like this one. (Literally only five actors in it, and two only have like one line each. There are only two filming locations: a hotel room and a hotel restaurant with the five actors.)

The premise is refreshing. A widow to a 30+yr marriage who has never really had a positive sexual encounter-just very mundane and routine. Two years after her husband's passing she decides it's time to become "worldly" (as she describes it). There are many awkward scenes because of her serious and severe insecurities. The character Leo does an amazing job of redirecting focus to Nancy and only breaks to his actual real life person (Connor) twice. Once when he's infuriated with the fact that Nancy cyber stalked him to obtain his real name, and the second when they meet again for the first time after the blowup (which is also their last encounter sexually upstairs after this meeting).

The only part of this movie that was "expected" was the ending where she has her first orgasm of her life-but the symbolic part is that she gave it to herself while looking at him (oddly enough he had just scratched his ass lol)

This was almost like a coming of age movie, but not. There was something so seriously raw and real about it.

It could have been shortened or less re-hashing situations (as others have mentioned in their reviews), but I think that would have made it less relatable to the viewer. It was SUPER AUTHENTIC to how I imagine this sort of situation would go. Nothing wrong with it following along the lines of reality.

BRAVO to the writers and actors alike. VERY WELL DONE.

Nancy's checklist
ferguson-616 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Greetings again from the darkness. Normally when we see a movie where the focus is almost entirely on two characters conversing while in one room, we expect it to feel like something better served in live theater. But director Sophie Hyde does succeed in keeping it cinematic, despite the dialogue-centric script from writer Katy Brand and a setting that is 95 percent within the confines of a single hotel room. An extraordinary performance from two-time Oscar winner Emma Thompson and solid complimentary work from Daryl McCormack keep us interested in the characters.

Nancy Stokes (Ms. Thompson) is a middle-aged woman fidgeting in a hotel room when Leo Grande (Mr. McCormack) knocks on her door and asks if he may kiss her on the cheek. It turns out Nancy is two years a widow and has hired sex worker Leo to assist with knocking a few things off her to-do list of unfulfilled intimate activities. See, Nancy has only ever had sex with her husband, and now she longs to feel young and excited again, and hopes this pay-for-it adventure will scratch that itch in just the right way.

Their initial meeting is fascinating to watch. Nancy, a former religious studies teacher, is a planner, list-maker, and steps-follower. She's also filled with nervous energy and a bit embarrassed by the situation ... clearly wanting to move forward, while trying to convince herself she doesn't really want it. On the other side of this would-be tryst, Leo is the master of calm demeanor and smooth talk. He's a professional who takes pride in the "service" he provides, and he recognizes what to say (and when) to try and put Nancy at ease. It's clearly not his first rodeo. In this initial meeting, Nancy and Leo literally dance around the sex, and instead focus on conversation. She wants to know all about him, while he just wants to the job he was hired for.

Subsequent meetings (jobs, hook-ups, trysts?) between the two occur in the same room at The Duffield Hotel, and Nancy continues to poke the personal boundaries that Leo tries to uphold. As happens with human nature, barriers begin to break down. This intrusion changes the dynamics and causes quite the mood shift as personal lives and relationships open wounds that are probably best left to a situation where one hasn't contracted for the sexual services of another.

Most of the dialogue seems believable and true to the characters, and Ms. Thompson does much of the heavy lifting. The only exceptions to this would be Nancy offering to talk to Leo's mother (What the heck? That's ridiculous even for a former teacher.), and when Nancy recalls asking her class about the impact of pay-for-sex ... a discussion that seems a bit too on point for the film. A truly annoying song plays over the opening credits, but later an Alabama Shakes song plays with perfect timing. When Nancy's real name is revealed, that too produces a cringe, but mostly we are reminded that the perfect fantasy sex partner will always be just that - a fantasy. Ms. Hyde's film leaves us with this thought ... will "empirically sexy" become the go-to compliment for romantic partners?

Opens in theaters on June 17, 2022.

Let's talk about ... sex(?)
kosmasp25 May 2022
This played at the sneak preview the other night. And it was a delight. Not sure what people were expecting, but the fact that no one left the theatre is a good sign. You never know what you get, but there is always someone who will walk out at these events.

Having said that, who in their right mind is not in love with Emma Thompson? Platonically and otherwise that is. Such a great actress and personality overall. I can only imagine what went through her head playing this uptight role. But she has a great counter part to play off with. A man who seems to know what he wants - or rather what his customers want.

Do not expect this to be too revealing or too sexual though. Having said that, also do not think that it will pull punches or refrain from showing skin. But it has to be earned - it has to make sense. It is the game, the playfulness, the serious talk, the getting to know each other ... before it makes sense to fully bare oneself - pun intended.

And as we get to know the people - we do root for them in a weird sense. Because we know this is an arrangement. This is not your usual love story, where you expect the main characters to end up together in the end. Even so, certain things happen that will shock you to a degree. Because while this is light and funny ... it also provides us with a darker side. There is drama - and that feels necessary too.

We are all humans, we all have needs. Maybe we should not shame each other - especially those who try to explore them. Everyone has different needs and wants - and everyone goes on different about obtaining them. Just remember: life is precious and time is even more precious. Make the most of it - sounds cliche, but if you get something out of this, hopefully it is the positive messages it sends out. Well done, even if touchy for some (again pun intended)

Love yourself before you can love others
stevelivesey6719 June 2022
This movie is at its best when the two leads are talking and revealing their innermost selves to each other. The acting is very good, the writing generally good with sensitive direction.

There are some points that are questionable though. It feels like a play and not a cinematic experience with the action taking place in one room. Emma Thompson blurting everything out at the waitress at the end felt ridiculous. And lastly, if you reverse the sex of the roles, is it still valid or just tawdry?

Actually original!
dirk_and20 June 2022
A truly original movie in a day and age where formulaic crap dominates. If you are prudish, this is not for you. The whole movie is about an older woman's interaction with a male sex worker so it is certainly not appropriate for all viewers, but such a well written and well acted movie that I actually came here to write a review. Well worth taking the time to watch this.

My Dinner with a Prostitute
Jblum523 January 2022
Good luck to You, Leo Grande is the story of a lonely and aging woman who hires a prostitute to fulfill her mental and sexual desires. She is quite wound up woman who doesn't quite know what she is looking for or what she needs, and it is implied she has only ever been ashamed of her body or wanting physically.

The movie is essentially a character study of Emma Thompson's character discovering on how to become one with herself as she gets older. The majority of this film is conversation and most of the film is not sexually graphic... as it isn't the focal point the film maker is going for. Think if "My Dinner with Andre" and "pretty woman" had a baby. Both our leads are quite good here as you may expect. Production design is great despite its limited setting and scope. This was seemingly made with very little money but it doesn't show.

The beginning and end of the film are really quite satisfying.. and they really nail the end here it was really powerful. The middle is such a huge drag it detracts from the film immensely. I felt like many things get rehashed and it almost needed a bigger scope to justify the runtime. This movie would have been better at 75 or 80 minutes. There is just no momentum going into our final act that if I turned it off I would have been okay (but again the ending was very good.)

The movie's humor is really good when it uses it but most of the movie seemingly almost takes itself too seriously. However there is a lot of chew on here especially if the concept sounds interesting to you.

Prince Charming as a Prostitute
casablancax24 June 2022
The only man with whom a woman can have an orgasm is Prince Charming as a prostitute, who also happens to be the "king of the jungle" with a large endowment - Leo Grande translates to "Big Lion". Seriously? This film lacks truth and spews the same clichéd baloney Pretty Woman did over 30 years ago, and this film is just as offensive.

Just like Gere's character in Pretty Woman, Thompson's character is white, upper-class and uses a posh, expensive hotel suite as her sexual playground. The filmmakers invoke the female gaze through the depiction of the male character as perfectly toned, without body hair, and six-pack abs much like Julia Roberts' character who was depicted with a perfect body to the point in which a leg model was used as a body double to appeal to the male gaze.

Despite living through the sexual revolution, the proliferation for sex-tip articles in glamour magazines, and HBO series such as Hung and Sex in the City, Thompson's character is a sexually naïve and clueless woman unable to find her own clitoris.

However, the Big Lion prostitute is kind, funny, confident, and STD-free - like most well-educated and emotionally secure prostitutes. He doesn't even look at the clock. He speaks with perfect grammar and can dance at the same time. His Arthur Murray lessons are paying off and can double as a tax write-off.

Study after study has shown that the majority of women, about 60%-80%, do not have vaginal orgasms, which proves male endowment does not have the importance many want to believe. Thompson's character agonizes over her body dysmorphia, yet the screenwriter emphasizes the importance of Big Lion's body with the euphemism.

If female storytellers want to change the perception and acceptance of the female body, then they need to lead the way in changing the perception and acceptance of male genitalia.

In addition, are we really to believe the male prostitute is a well-read pop psychologist who has the listening and empathy skills of every Harlequin dreamboat? Yes, we are supposed to believe it, which makes this story even more pathetic.

And, why are we wishing the man good luck? Shouldn't we be wishing Nancy Stokes (Thompson) good luck? Why can't Nancy meet a non-prostitute to have an orgasm? How come Nancy's girlfriends haven't taken her to see "Fried Green Tomatoes" with a handheld mirror in tow? Let's hope Nancy has found her clitoris by the time the credits roll.

Pretty woman without the criticism
rcuttill18 June 2022
It's good and it's fun but I can't help feeling it's "Pretty Woman" but without the criticism. Whilst it's not a mirror image of "Pretty Woman" one can't help feeling it would get criticism if the sexes were reversed. Essentially it's a frustrated woman hires a male prostitute to help sexually liberate her. She's a retired religious.education teacher who apparently has had a very unsatisfactory marriage and adult children she loves but kind of doesn't like. None of this is really explored. It's just a backdrop to the central story. This woman needs to try out and be comfortable with things she should have tried out 30 something years ago. The nudity and the sex are not over-emphasised but appropriate to the plot. So it's her sexual journey and it's well done and it's enjoyable. Enjoy the romp.

Emma Thompson is just brilliant in her role, while Daryl McCormack is superb
r96sk15 February 2023
What a terrific film!

If you had told me the general gist of 'Good Luck to You, Leo Grande' out of context, I'd have predicted a dull and dreary 90 minutes or so were ahead of me. Thankfully, the film itself is a delight. Before watching, I only knew of the poster and thought it was strictly a sex comedy, so was expecting a silly, fast-paced, if forgettable, age gap romcom.

The film is, thankfully, much more than that. Emma Thompson is just brilliant in her role, while Daryl McCormack is superb from beginning to end - cool to see him in a larger role than in (the awesome) 'Peaky Blinders'. It's perfect casting, the two absolutely nail their performances and are a joy to watch onscreen together.

The one location (for the most part) doesn't hamper things, if anything it only adds to events. I was particularly impressed with the dialogue, especially the more comedic moments. There is one line involving Rolf Harris which was, perhaps, a misstep but all in all it's pretty sharp. It has a story to tell and one that I think it portrays very nicely.

What if the Gender Roles were reversed?
ringhiogattuso14 June 2022
Heart warming film about a middle-aged woman who hires a male escort for some adventure.... All good, but a thought kept creeping in my head... What if the gender roles were reversed? The movie would be Vilified and the main character would be considered a predatory Ghoul.

Strangely surprising
Bgappl0718 June 2022
When I first read what it was all about I wasn't impressed I thought it would probably be ridiculous or boring or both Then comes a big surprise I would say the first half or a bit more of the movie is actually hysterically funny I laughed a lot maybe that's because I too am of a certain age and it's relatable For me personally the last third or so of the movie was a bit of a letdown it's kind of preachy putting everything in its proper place whereas this movie has nothing to do with proper places it explores things that are quite normal but not perceived by society or even the people themselves as such sometimes it needs to be brought to peoples attention this film does it with great fun and Emma Thompson is a delight and so is her partner who I'm not familiar with but is quite good in this role.

I do think if this was a different time people would not be so extreme in their reactions you get conservative versus woke etc. Etc. I think just take it for what it is and enjoy it!!

OMG, this was amazing
dlsaltzberg19 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
People who write, "Emma wasn't sexy enough" are missing the point. EVERYONE should love their bodies and the pleasure that can be had, physical and emotional, with or without other people.

That sounds pretentious, but--I'm sorry, Emma T is an onion, peeling back layer upon layer of an older woman, a woman who's never had satisfying sex. How brave her character is, to hire a sex worker...how brave Emma-the-actress is, to bare both body and soul for the camera, for US.

A breathtaking performance. Am I the only one who related to every sigh, to every single cringe of insecurity, of calling yourself "embarrassing" or "pathetic" before someone else calls you that first?

I think not.

And Daryl McCormick was a fantasy come true--built like a Greek god, sensitive, giving, and aware that he was a fantasy.

Their give-and-take, their off-and-on...I have a feeling I shall be reliving this in my mind for a long, long time to come.

And for those who say, But if you reverse roles, it's creepy: It has ALWAYS been men, older men, more powerful men, younger women; the men have power, and the women trade their beauty. In this story, she is older, but she is vulnerable. I rarely see men as vulnerable in other stories.

This is something I have never before seen on film. When the minority up-ends the majority, when the weaker overcomes the stronger--that is a story. Male privilege, we've seen. Turning the tables, especially with extraordinary actors like Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack, is here a revelation.

Interesting that the film's title is wishing HIM luck--she has found her happy ending.

Extremely manipulative film on elder sex and improbable male lead
laura_macleod22 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There are a few ways to view Good luck to you Leo Grande; see it as a kind of comedy with dark humour or some preachy know it all lecture on sex and generations but I found it very voyeuristic and shallow. First of all it assumes that most women of Emma Thompson's age would have led practically sexless lives - how far from the truth. Most women of her generation were extremely active when young in the sexual revolution and would be the opposite of her lack of experience. Yes, there is the aspect of growing older and having less sex naturally and not having the beauty of youth to acquire desirable partners - but this film goes a step too far. It suggests that older women are in fact sexless and with major hand ups - this all portrayed with a female script writer and female director. Astounding!!!! A male director would have most probably put a far more complimentary spin on an attractive older woman - look at Anne Bancroft in The Graduate. Instead we are presented with an extremely handsome male 'prostitute' so kind and nice and intelligent and a total fabricated stereotype - what an insult to male sexuality. Leo Grande character is unrealistic as portrayed in this film. He is portrayed with a massive mother complex (of course!! Why else would he be seeking sex for money with matriarchs?). An absolutely unrealistic script and scenario painted over with a luxury hotel room and of course bringing in one of his client's ex pupils in the coffee shop? ( she is a teacher) YEAH RIGHT - completely ridiculous . The film is a manipulation of reality - sorry but older women are having hot sex naturally and most male prostitutes are not going to be doing it for free like at the end of the film because this is sell out - film makers today in this woke generations can't handle the truth . Emma Thompson is a great actress no doubt about it but the baring of her totally naked body and its flaws at the end was just pure voyeurism and a cheap shot to convince the audience that after this improbable scenario - she suddenly accepted herself? No way - as usual we are spoon fed saccharin and tosh.

Two remarkable performances, particularly Daryl McCormack
vincentlynch-moonoi18 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The good news here is that if you take the time to watch this film, you will see two remarkable performances. Most people are raving about Emma Thompson...and she is good here...as always. But I'm going to tip my hat to Daryl McCormack for a truly remarkable performance. I was not familiar with him until watching this film. I think he is a young actor to watch.

However, on the negative side, the movie is a bit too long...particularly the middle. And, taking place almost entirely in a hotel room, it is almost entirely talk, talk, talk. It's great dialog and well presented...but any film where you have basically one setting can begin to feel very closed in.

I don't want to sound like a prude, but are there really "sex workers" that are this sensitive? I don't know, but I find it doubtful that someone this caring would choose to be a sex worker.

The romantic side of me (as in 'suggestive of an idealized view of reality') wanted the end of the film to find our two main characters deciding to have some type of ongoing relationship...in my hopes more an almost mother-son relationship...although I knew that wasn't likely in the cards.

This is a film worth watching even if it does drag in the middle.

Amazing Performances and Message
mrjeffmoore20 June 2022
What a wonderful film-- but it's definitely for a certain audience (thus why I took one star away).

This movie is for anybody who is starting to feel older. We all age, and our bodies change and our hair gets grey. However, this movie is all about embracing those changes and accepting them. It is sex positive and body-image positive.

Hats off to Emma Thomspson who gives the performance of her career. At the beginning, she plays a woman who has never had an orgasm. Sex for her was a routine she did with her husband, but it gave her no pleasure. When she first meets Leo, she is exhaustingly nervous. She fidgets, says all the wrong things, and just can't get comfortable. As she continues to meet with Leo, she begins to rediscover love-- not for another, but for her herself. At the end when she stands alone, looking at her naked body in the mirror, she doesn't seem nervous or sad anymore. She touches her belly and radiantly smiles at her reflection. It is an amazing moment for anybody who has started to see the affects of aging on the body. If we could all have a wonderful moment of self-acceptance and love it would be a better world.

This is not a love story between two people. It's a love story about loving your body, your desires, and yourself.

It's Been Grande Stoking You
NJMoon19 June 2022
Yes, talky and single-minded in concept, but Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack bring something special to it. The scene between Nancy, Leo, and the Waitress is well worth waiting for. On the surface, the film is about body positivity, but there's more to be discovered during Nancy and Leo's not-so-brief encounters.

Good movie that quickly fell off the rails
chattenoire-120 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Darryl McCormack was a delight to watch...but the delight ends there. Although I imagine it was quite unrealistic for a sex worker to be so patient and compassionate with a client, I loved seeing Leo's suave skill at his job. Unfortunately for me, the film became preachy in its sex positivity message and also quite unrealistic. Nancy admits she rejected older potential lovers in favour of Leo's youth, beauty and sexual prowess. As other reviewers have pointed out, if the sexes were reversed, the same message would be distasteful and unacceptable. An interesting side note is the drama that ensued when Nancy breached Leo's boundaries by cyber-stalking him and later offering to intercede with his mother!!! The last scene with the former student/waitress was just embarrassing to watch.
