Early promise becomes routine thriller
neil-47626 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Celine and Alice are affluent next door neighbours, best friends, and each has a son: they are also best friends. Celine's son dies in an accident: does she blame Alice? Anne Hathaway is Celine and Jessica Chastain is Alice.

The first half of this movie is very good stuff. The introduction is an exercise in exposition: it does the job slickly and quickly. Then, after the accident, the depiction of how everyone deals with grief in the context of their own relationships is complex, painful and entirely convincing.

Then the movie enters psychological thriller territory. Is Celine up to nefarious shenanigans? Is it just her dealing with her grief? Or is Alice manifesting unnamed issues which she apparently suffered from in the past?

This second part is a good deal less convincing than the first part, and is fairly disappointing by comparison with the start. We've seen it a hundred times, even if we're not sure how it's going to play out.

Simple Plot With Professional Actresses
Andikalix23 March 2024
Mothers' Instinct weaves a web of suspense, keeping viewers guessing about the characters' motivations. The film hinges on the captivating performances of its lead actresses, who deliver powerful portrayals of women driven by maternal instinct. Stylish cinematography heightens the tension, creating a palpable atmosphere of unease. Mothers' Instinct is a slow-burn thriller that explores complex themes of loss, fractured relationships, and the unwavering bond between mothers and their children. This thought-provoking film leaves audiences questioning appearances and grappling with moral ambiguity long after the credits roll.

👗 Man, the film was a Perfect Watch and then near the 3rd Act, the script decides to choose a completely terrible decision. 👗 Warning: Spoilers
Just got out of a Mothers' Instinct Screening.

It was Literally Perfect....... the Script was Firing and Working, the Sheer Paranoia of Alice and the Projected Shadiness(by Alice) on to Celine was Working so well as a Juxtaposition.

And built this Literal Rabbit Hole of Paranoia & Delusion playing on screen. It was such an excellent Watch......and then it Makes an Absolutely Disastrous Script Choice.

So here I am, sitting in the Cinema, I've just Watched that Excellent Balcony Scene with Alice, Celine and Theo and thinking "Man, this is a Perfect Watch".

We then get to the part where Celine and Alice are Having Cigarettes 🚬, Sitting Down and Smoking and Making Up and Forgiving eachother and I then thought to myself -

  • "This is the Film, a Film about Paranoia, Delusion, Bad energy and that these 3 things Destroy People Around Us, and Especially Harms the Kids around us seeing this stuff"

  • "That's it, End the Film Here, it's Perfect (add a slow pan out shot and fade to black)."

BUT NO! We get, in my opinion, an Absolute Domino Effect of a Disaster. It's not that the actual Films Ending didn't work, it's the fact that it was a weak as hell execution, Due to the fact that this Pathways' Ending wasn't built up strongly enough in that Direction to end at a Resolution like this.

Even when films are based on Novels, either build things properly to produce effective outcomes or make amendments to the script.

Anyway, Here's the Positives -

1. 👩‍💼👱Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastains Acting Ability was Top Notch. Correct Lack of Facial expressions/Facial Expressions at the right moments expressing that Given Emotion, Dialogue, Line Delivery, the Chemistry they had as Best Friends, everything. The Supporting Husbands and the 2 Kids were Fine.

2.👗Costume Design, Make-up and Hair, Perfectly done for the Time Period.

3. 🍭Production Design and Props, again, Matching the Time Period.

4. 🎵 Score, once again, Matches the Film Perfectly and is Used effectively at the Correct Moments

5. 🎥 Cinematography, Gorgeous Cinematography Coupling the Production Design and Colour Grading. It has this Bright Sheen to it. Beautiful to Watch.

Overall, it was a 10/10......and then Drops to a 7/10 roughly a little bit after the cigarette/Forgiveness Scene up to the Ending.

Mediocre thriller at best
sherly22115 March 2024
The beginning started out promising and the acting is superb as what you can expect from A-listers such as Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway. Kinda remind me of Fractured in Netflix as the premise is kinda guessing whether it is the bad guy and the hallucinating side. Sadly, those talents and concept are wasted in what started out as an intriguing story then turns into something dull boring with laughable ending.

There are plot holes here and there alongside with the SUPER PREDICTABLE storyline which makes the thrill gone by the end of the first half. With its 95 mins run time they can actually stretch it a bit and make it into something out of ordinary instead of this rushed B movie kind of story. Don't waste your time in the cinema for this.

A creeping , unsettling story, that doesn't quite deliver.
RaveReviewerzzz3 April 2024
"Mother's Instinct" is a psychological thriller that offers a compelling exploration of suburban paranoia, but ultimately falls short meriting a 6 out of 10 rating. Set in the 1960s, the film stars Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain as Alice and Celine, two neighbors whose idyllic lives unravel after a tragic accident.

The film's strength lies in its lead performances. Hathaway and Chastain deliver nuanced portrayals of complex characters, capturing the escalating tension with a sense of urgency that keeps viewers engaged. The production design and costume work are also noteworthy, effectively transporting the audience to the era with a meticulous attention to detail.

However, "Mother's Instinct" stumbles in its final act. The build-up of suspense and mystery, carefully crafted throughout the movie, culminates in an ending that feels both rushed and disappointing. . The resolution lacks the emotional payoff that the preceding narrative promises, leaving viewers with more questions than answers.

Despite its shortcomings, "Mother's Instinct" is a visually striking film with strong central performances. It's a worthwhile watch for fans of the genre, though it may not leave a lasting impression due to its underwhelming conclusion.

It was all great, aside from the ending
george_spree30 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Really enjoyed it till the ending, it was probably an 8/10 most of the way through. Then the last 15 minutes the rest of the film goes out the window.

Before this it was enjoyable, great acting all around. You aren't quite sure which of the two leads to believe, who's nuts and who's not. By the time you find out there are so many plot holes popping up that you start to laugh. For example the blonde housewife all of a sudden panically checks the medicine cabinet of her neighbour (why all of a sudden panicked? She wanted to go in there and check before anyway) then when she does, OMG - once box of chloroform - her husband worked for a pharma company, couldn't that be relatively normal? It wasn't a huge quanitity?

Anyway even this aside the ending was pretty disappointing 😢

Mothers' Instinct
CinemaSerf28 March 2024
"Celine" (Anne Hathaway) and "Alice" (Jessica Chastain) are neighbours, and their sons "Max" and "Theo" best pals. It's when a tragedy ensues that the family's dynamics are profoundly altered and the two women's relationship is quickly underpinned by feelings of resentment and mistrust. In the end, it's "Celine" who appears to offer the olive branch, but it doesn't take long for "Alice" to begin to suspect that she has an ulterior motive. For quite a while, director Benoît Delhomme manages to keep the apprehensive and tense atmosphere going as the pair quite cleverly challenge us to choose whom to believe. Sadly, though, that is all rather abruptly clarified for us and we are presented with a rather disappointing denouement that really is full of holes. That said, there is an effective chemistry between these actors who quiet successfully imbue their characters with quite a potent mix of determination and as the title suggests, a protective instinct for those closest to them. It's well paced throughout and is certainly worth a watch - though the television will do fine, cinema doesn't really add much by way of visuals or photography to this quite quirky at times thriller.

Epic! Anne x Jessica = Epic!
desiurads13 March 2024
Breathtaking!! Again, Breathtaking!!!!!!

This is even much better than Exhuma or any other horror movies! It's not horror movie, but ir scared you!

When I knew Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain shared screen, my heart said this will be epic and yes it is! Both have played very well as mother who loves their family and you're brought into the movie to feel how as a mothwr

You will hold your breath for the entire 100 minutes, and you will keep guessing who is the right mom and who is the bad one. You sometimes will go for Anne, then you swift to Jess, and so on..

Plot twist keeps happening and boom! You know the answer!

Love Love Love it!!

Solid But Not The Best Version of Itself
cdjh-8112510 April 2024
The biggest issue this movie has is that it seems to be much more focused on pay off than it is set up. The inciting incident of the whole thing comes way too early before the characters and dynamics have time to be properly established. It also has a pretty bad habit of bringing up plot elements right before they come into play so it makes some of the twists and turns less impactful. At 94 minutes things do feel a bit too rushed through for it's own good but I always felt as though I was feeling what I was supposed to.

Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain are outstanding and make this thing almost constantly riveting to watch. It's also a great vehicle for tension and the filmmakers did such a good job at creating situations to get the most anxiety inducing results. It surprisingly manages to blends it's grief themes and thriller elements extremely well and even if some of the reveals feel as if they come in the wrong order nothing felt out of place or jarring.

Knowing this film is based on a novel does make me think there's a more sturdy execution of this story available but it's still not without impact. It's got 2 phenomenal performances at it's centre and when these character are sharing scenes is where this movie feels the most effecting. While it's definitely a flawed experience, it's something I can absolutely see myself recommending.

Well acted but forgettable film
burntoutboy27 March 2024
Mother's instinct, starring Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain, is a film set in the 60's about two mothers who are neighbours and great friends. Their children are best friends too. All seems well when a tragic incident happens.

This sets the tone for the film however what follows is a thriller that's pretty forgettable.

It is well acted, especially by the two leads which helps emphasize the emotions both of them go through throughout the film, but that's really it. It just seems so generic with nothing really to shock you.

The overall quality of this film reminds of films that should be on streaming services.

Overall, you aren't missing much.

A thoroughly engaging thriller with two incredible lead performances
ethanbresnett25 March 2024
Mother's Instinct is a really solid dramatic thriller that will draw you in and keep you hooked.

It follows suburban housewives Celine and Alice, whose lives are plunged into turmoil when a tragic loss throws doubt over their relationship with dramatic consequences.

From a story perspective the film is really solid. It has great momentum throughout and accelerates towards a thrilling final act. I do think that maybe the middle could have been stretched out a touch. They perhaps sold themselves short with only a 90 minute runtime as I think there was more scope to develop some elements of the story. That being said what they do have is all good so this isn't a major complaint.

Really though this film is all about the two lead women who are incredible. Jessica Chastain in particular is sublime and her performance alone gives this film an extra star. Anne Hathaway alongside her is brilliant and the two characters are just so well put together. Even if nothing else about this film appeals to you, it is worth watching to see these two fantastic performances.

If you are looking for a solid thriller that will draw you in and give you some fantastic performances then Mother's Instinct will most definitely deliver.

Good Enough
PennyReviews1 April 2024
'' Mothers' Instinct '' is a family drama-thriller. The story escalates from dark to darker.

The pace of the story, moreover, was smooth, though the ending was more intense and rushed compared to the rest of the story.

Also, the performances were really good and enjoyable, and that aided the movie a lot, as the story was leaning to much on its characters and it centered on them.

In addition, the costumes and cinematography was enjoyable and created the right atmosphere for the drama. The makeup and hair were good enough.

Finally, the child actors did a good job with their performances.

So, overall, seven out of ten.

Great acting but a contrived and laughable story
stu-miller-353-32989329 March 2024
I've just been to the cinema with my wife to watch this. Firstly, I have to say it's shot beautifully and the costume/hair department did a brilliant job. The film itself it appears to be a poor screen manifestation of a book (I haven't read the book, but I can imagine that I'm not far off the mark suggesting that a lot of character backstory/development is sorely missed). The characters, whilst played capably by the likes of Chastain and Hathaway, aren't particularly likeable (especially Chastain's son) to the point of getting on your nerves. The plot becomes contrived and wildly silly and the finale had us laughing, but for all the wrong reasons. You just get the sense that you've seen this all before but done a lot, lot better. A really disappointing experience, in my opinion.

Which Mother Knows Best?
danchilton-7195515 April 2024
Mothers' Instinct is set in 1960 and aims to be a throwback to the glossy thrillers of that era. More specifically, it feels like a stab at aping Hitchcock, marrying tense psychodrama with grand visuals and crowd pleasing twists. Needles to say, it falls some way short of matching the Master of Suspense.

Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway play Alice and Celine. They are neighbours, friends and both parents of young boy who are also close. When Celine's son dies in a tragic accident, Alice becomes convinced her grieving friend blames her and is plotting revenge.

First time director Benoit Delhomme is an experienced cinematographer and it shows with the film's aesthetic being one of its greatest strengths. It's a small film, set mostly in and around a couple of houses but the period setting is beautifully observed and every shot is painstakingly composed. The pastel colours and stunning costumes are in stark contrast to the grim goings on and provide insight into the characters and their mood.

Mothers' Instinct's other big plus, or rather pluses, are its two leads. This isn't the first time Chastain and Hathaway have been in a film together but it is the first time they've shared the screen and they play off each other expertly. Whether they're being bosom buddies, suspicious frenemies or outright adversaries they are magnetic. Even when one of them is alone in a room they are telling the story with every facial movement. A strong supporting cast help them along the way but it's really the leading ladies show.

Unfortunately all the style and great acting is hung on a screenplay that just isn't up to the task. There are moments of tension but it never really feels like it's escalating, Mothers Instinct treads the shallows for most of its runtime before abruptly diving off the deep end for a conclusion. There's nothing wrong with keeping things subtle but an ending like the one we get here should be built towards, not feel like it could have come out of nowhere at any time. It also doesn't help that the strory goes in the most predictable direction open to it and in the process robs both main characters of any interesting nuance they had built up.

So Mothers' Instinct is ultimately a letdown, especially for the leads. Performances this good shouldn't be portraying a story this underbaked.

Masterclass of acting, a super film too.
donmurray2926 March 2024
Giving this an 8/10 rating

Did a double bill of 'Late Night with the Devil' and 'Mothers' Instinct' which I also gave an 8/10, having a good day at the cinema is really, good so both films get rewarded.

Remake of a Foreign language film from a few years back, which, I missed and will have to check up on, the trailer does not let you into the full set up of the film, which is a good thing.

Anne Hathawayand Jessica Chastain, just show why they earn their Oscars for acting in this, there is not a single misstep from them. They are the draw and cry of the film, along with total brilliant work from Josh Charles and Anders Danielsen Lie. Eamon Patrick O'Connell deserves special mention as he had a tough role, and a tough ask from his character, as does the movie's outlook though out.

The film has a glow to it, thanks to Benoît Delhomme, very European but Trans Atlantic look to it, you could go as far as say a magic look, which works, and does misdirect, for a good reason. It is so well done, I just am surprised how it's getting released in the middle of other big films right now, that it will get passed over. Don't miss this acting masterclass of a movie.

Plots are rarely as preposterous as this
carl-parker-54-1430172 April 2024
I thought I could say the plot was risible, but then I realised that would suggest there is something to laugh at.

It's simply, utterly ridiculous and miserable to boot. There are no thrills because the stupidity of the plot beggars belief.

Yes there is good acting. Unfortunately that is not enough to carry the film.

Actors say it is difficult to assess how good or bad a film is during filming. However I am amazed that performers of the calibre of Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway could read the screenplay and think that anything remotely watchable could arise from the drivel that was being offered to them and even commit to making the film.

Fantastic acting and so emotive!
ellsmellipad28 March 2024
If you like suspenseful dramas with a 60s backdrop then you'll love this. Really clever, intelligent writing and an interesting perspective, story-wise. Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway were absolute brilliant could not fault their performance aswell.

The only fault I would say is that in some parts of the storyline, it's slightly unrealistic but, if that wasn't accidental then it could be seen as part of its charm? They could've established some of the relationships more aswell to give the audience more chance to get invested in them.

Emotionally intelligent and very gripping overall though and would recommend.

Real Housewives of New Jersey
joealthouse19 March 2024
Hathaway and Chastain have a professional interest in this film. They are both producers. A drawn out, burdensome, film with a predictable outcome. Yes, there were a couple twists, red herrings, enough to make me consider alternative outcomes. Some have said it was Hitchcockian. It wasn't. Background music was adequate but not suspenseful. Upon leaving the theater my wife asked me what I thought of the movie (she gave it a 5). My first thought was, "why would two accomplished actors invest their own money in this stinker?" Coming from New Jersey, and growing up in this era, I loved the cars, homes, and costumes. Smoking was normal then but somehow I felt it a bit offsetting having lost parents and siblings to cancer caused by tobacco use. It's a remake of Duelles (2018). I'm thinking of watching it for comparison but not so sure I'm willing to invest another 90 minutes.

Suburban Noir
Pairic31 March 2024
Mothers' Instinct (2024): Another early 1960s suburban melodrama which segues into Noir and perhaps enters the slipstream of Horror. Alice (Jessica Chastain) and Céline (Anne Hathaway) are next door neighbours, best friends just as their eight year old sons are buddies. Céline's son Max dies in a tragic accident which Alice tried to prevent but was too late. Céline avoids Alice and goes into a hospital, she returns seeming still somewhat strained but reconnects with Alice and her son Theo. Alice worries about how close Céline is getting to Theo and fears that he might be at risk. Theo is allergic to peanuts and sometimes behaves oddly for an eight year old, acting both younger (carrying around a teddy bear). Yet also being inquisitive beyond his years. Alice wonders if Céline is gaslighting her or is her old paranoia and depression returning. Does this Noir tale contain a femme fatale? If so who is it? No spoilers from me you're going to have watch the film to find out. Beautifully filmed in faded pastel tones it even has scenes reminiscent of Carol and the recent Noir film Eileen. Great performances from Hathaway and Chastain with good support from Eamon Patrick O'Connell as Theo. Something bold is attempted here and while it may not quite achieve what the director aspired to, it's nevertheless a fascinating film. Directed by Benoît Delhomme, Adapted for the screen by Sarah Conradt from the novel Derrière la haine by Barbara Abel. 7.5/10.

Visually beautiful but a wierd horrible story likely written by AI
Tomaslillebror6 April 2024
If you've ever used an AI image creator you know you will sometimes get really wierd and horrible pictures. You might get people with ten fingers, three legs, people fuzed to the wall or mixed with some animal. This movie is wierd and inhumane like that. The story is just disgusting and illogical in a bad way. This movie is what I imagine a psychopathic would create bcs it just lacks humanity and human rational behaviour and I struggle to see the value of this movie. My guess is that this is a script made by AI and somehow it slipped through the clearing process.

The acting is good but the story just made me not care. There is nothing likeable with the characters, its a stiff depiction of family life in the perceived 60s. Throughout the movie there is nothing I find likeable, not even the beautiful 60s design can lift this trash. Maybe this movie was made to give you a bad feeling of the 60s family life in America.

Everyone is also White. No "diversity" here but certainly a clear ugly feeling..

You are better off skipping this.

Grief > Guilt > Paranoia > Madness
Lomax34317 April 2024
Two mothers (Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway, both of whom give stellar performances) are next-door neighbours who lead seemingly idyllic 1960s lives. They each have an eight-year-old son; the boys are best friends.

Then a tragic accident occurs, and one of the boys dies (not a spoiler, it's in the trailer). The rest of the film is about the way in which the women, and their husbands, and the surviving boy (newcomer Eamon Patrick O'Connell, who is excellent) deal with the aftermath of the tragedy. The answer is: Not well at all.

We see the expected stages of grief, but overlaid with finger-pointing and suspicion, leading to a descent into madness. But just who is going mad? The film very cleverly wrongfoots the viewer, first suggesting that this is a simple tragedy, then that there might be something sinister going on, then that there might not be...

The result is a wild ride, with an ending that will live long in the memory.

Waste of real potential
chris_rowe-881-16882011 April 2024
The budget was clearly blown on the two female leads, then someone googled "generic white 40 year old actors" then these two popped up, they were bad. But for me this is the 6th film in 3 year I've seen with JC as a lead and she's abysmal, such a forgettable and weak actress, from mannerisms to line delivery, just bad, the only reason this was watchable was Anne who was amazing!

Story was good, they didn't commit to showing the scenes that'd have caused shock and sadness, it was all tame, arty and well, boring. The pacing is super slow and how the relationships capitulate is unrealistic, from best friends to accusing of murder? Bit much.

I felt sorry for the wrong person for 95% of the film, then I just gave up caring,

It's a bit far fetched and ludicrous in places, overall this had big potential but poor pacing, casting and decision making ruined it.

Mothers' Instinct
jboothmillard26 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I watched the trailer for this film a couple of times in the cinema, I didn't realise it was a remake of a Belgian film, which I was unable to find to watch before; Mark Kermode gave this film a relatively positive review while the Radio Times which gave it 2 out of 5, I decided to watch it and make my own mind up. Basically, set in the 1960s, in the American suburbs, Alice (Jessica Chastain, also producing) and Celine (Anne Hathaway, also producing) are next-door neighbours and mothers with sons of a similar age. Alice and Celine's friends and family stage a surprise birthday party for her. There are tensions between Alice and her husband Simon (Anders Danielsen Lie) during the party, and that night, she tells him she wants to go back to work as a journalist. She also suggests that they should have another child together; Celine cannot have any more children. The next day, Celine's son Max (Baylen D. Bielitz) is unwell and stays home from school. Alice is pruning the roses in the garden when she sees Max in a precarious position on the balustrade of the upper balcony trying to reach a birdhouse. Alice tries to crawl through the hedge but is forced to run around it to alert Celine of the danger. Alice runs upstairs, but neither she nor Celine get there quick enough, and Max falls off the balcony to his death. Alice feels guilty for not saving Max, and Celine appears to be distancing herself from her, perhaps blaming her for the accident. Alice notices Celine growing closer to her son Theo (Eamon Patrick O'Connell), who feels lost without his friend to play with. Alice finds solace in spending time with Theo, while her husband Damien (Josh Charles) has become depressed. At Max's funeral, Theo notices his treasured bunny rabbit toy has been placed in Max's coffin and lashes out. Celine apologises to Theo for taking the toy, and although she returns it, Alice has suspicions about her actions. A month later, Celine returns from an unknown location (possibly a mental hospital) and reconciles with Alice. Theo grows even closer to Celine. One day, Alice panics when she sees Theo on the same balcony next-door but manages to crawl through the hedge. Celine appears up there with him but is confused by Alice's reaction, and Alice is shocked and angered by her calmness. The following day, Alice questions Celine if she was testing her, but Celine makes her feel guilty for insinuating this. Theo has become so close to Celine that he invites her to his birthday party, much to Alice's disdain. The party goes normally, but Simon's mother Jean (Caroline Lagerfelt) talks to Celine, suggesting she should avoid anything that might remind her of Max. When Jean next visits, she suddenly collapses and dies of a heart attack. Paranoid that Celine was present at the time of death, she requests an autopsy from Dr. Wallace (Alexander Blaise), without Damien's knowledge. The autopsy reveals that there was no heart medication in Jean's system. Alice suspects that Celine tampered with Jean's medication but cannot find proof. Alice's suspicions increase when Theo is taken to hospital after a severe allergic reaction at Celine's house. Alice believes that Celine deliberately encouraged Theo to eat cookies, which he is allergic to. When Alice sees Celine leaving her house, she decides to sneak in to try to find evidence of her tampering with the drugs, but Celine catches her and orders her to leave. Alice tells Simon about everything she has noticed and mentions the autopsy without his permission. But Alice has had mental issues in the past, Simon is convinced that these issues are resurfacing, he does not believe her and suggests she should see a psychiatrist. Alice tells Simon that she wants to move away, after everything that has happened surrounding Celine. But Theo threatens to take his own life in response to their arguing and they try to reconcile as Alice admits she must be imagining things. However, later that night, Celine is seen killing her own husband, sedating him with chloroform, and slicing his wrist, making it look like a suicide. Despite the tension between them, Alice and Simon allow a seemingly distraught Celine to stay with them. Alice and Celine appear to reconcile talking things through. But when Alice decides to go next door to gather Celine's belongings, Celine sedates Simon and Theo. Alice finds evidence of Celine's twisted motives, including the chloroform, and races back. She and Celine fight, with Celine overpowering Alice and sedating her. Alice and Simon are killed when Celine disconnects a boiler to make it look like an accidental gas leak. She avoids the gas herself and spares Theo by barricading herself in his bedroom with the window open. In the end, Celine adopts Theo, and the two are happy together spending a fay at the beach. Also starring T. L. Flint as Officer, Steve Routman as Medical Examiner, Joel Nagle as Attorney, Scott Robertson as Judge, and Larry Petersen as Pastor. Chastain as the highly paranoid neighbour and Hathaway as the obsessive woman with a warped mind both give credible performances, I can see the comparison to a Hitchcockian psychodrama, with emotions running high and the "potboiler" plot building up with paranoia, anxiety and silent hatred increasing between the two women, I agree it gets a bit too ludicrous by the end, but you cannot help but want to know where it is going, and the costumes and period detail is terrific, it is a glossy and tense enough psychological thriller. Worth watching!
