Trauma is Common, If Still Poorly Understood and Acknowledged
Bellatext12 January 2021
This episode does a good job of highlighting how many faces the results of trauma take, with their associated multiple responses along a large spectrum, just like humanity at large varies along a spectrum of responses generally. We see at least five doctors and one particular patient cope (or not so much) with the burden of some level of PTSD affecting them. That, in part, the experience and the responses we each have varies according to our specific background, characteristics and prior life experiences is emphasized really well. I would hope the drama here might impress this, if not as specifically as I write about it here, and especially with the empath's thread throughout the episode providing its prompting, might prompt a certain level of new or improved understanding of the illness that PTSD genuinely is.

I suspect this episode might cause some less well-informed persons (especially perhaps with such fortunately privileged lives to date they are unable to relate to how brain chemistry and emotion-related reactions can change following trauma, and alter the nervous system?) to trivialize one or another of these characters' experiences and resulting challenge with the high stress impacts - some of which may seem disproportionate to the cause, in some cases, where viewers cannot relate to the situation the character is portrayed in. Still, the soldier's traumatic experience as an apparent result of not observing an IED that kills others is not, in my opinion, inherently different to that of the traumatic loss created by one intern's/resident's fatal error with a patient. That combination of apparent guilt and grief resulting in part from a lack of control, especially where theoretically that was the job, to control the outcome, affecting the brain so badly, is no different I imagine, to the reliving and challenge to function that the student who couldn't perform a certain procedure found was the 'gut' response to her own PTS response in her "moment of truth" poised to carry out said procedure, notwithstanding what's revealed before and after this, as her intellectual intentions. Almost like a PSA for PTSD awareness, this episode shows us some of the many faces of PTSD!

All that said, given the trajectory of the season and this episode's implicit acknowledgement of COVID-19 in The Good Doctor's now-post-COVID world, via Lim's growing struggle arising from her pandemic experiences, it reflected well, I thought, the substantial additional burden that everyone in healthcare environments, especially frontline doctors and nurses, is shouldering now - and may live with the negative effects of, for the rest of their lives, in many cases.

I think that the correlation in time, and specifically (perhaps by a visual flashback instead of largely just audio) making it clear, now or in the future, Lim's thread is highly related to the pandemic is an important part of the chronology the creators missed here. Making it much more obviously post-COVID, through a few casual conversational interchanges early in the episode, would have been easily done. My thought on this might perhaps have helped another reviewer who appears angry (disproportionately, IMO) that this work of fiction fails to continue in the same timeframe the rest of us still dwell day-to-day, during a worldwide pandemic. I, for one, am really grateful that this show decided to largely leave the pandemic behind. Some of us appreciate not being bombarded with the same stress we are living, with seeing horror stories at every turn in what is supposed, mainly, to entertain us.

All that said, my final thought to share is that the PTSD portrayal didn't go quite far enough to substantiate the commonality of the stress responses to trauma the many subplots and characters involved in them displayed. Many viewers simply won't "get the message," I suspect. And that represents missed opportunity.

S4.E6 - Decent Episode and Less Agenda [8/10]
panagiotis199318 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
(S4. E6) My Live Reaction / Review for The Good Doctor Season 4 Episode 6 ''Lim''. The previous episode was ok and I gave it a rating of 7/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. This woman can feel what others are feeling? That's like a super power. This resident says she cant do the abortion because she is a christian and I respect that but I wonder, didn't she know that this is something that she would need to do one day. Also I don't understand these doctors, how can they do all kinds of surgeries? Im pretty sure that this is not how it works in real life. I feel bad for the guy with PTSD. Is Shaun doing anything in this episode? All I see is Dr. Lim. The new residents suck, every one of them, so boring, they make me feel bored and annoyed. Im glad they were able to help the guy with PTSD. Dr Lim seems very anxious and miserable, its sad. Overall this episode was good and I enjoyed it. My rating is 8/10.

Thank you for talking about mental health.

Is always positives to talk about me talk health and considering what we are going through, specially those who are frontliners , yo know that #YpuAreNotAlone is very important. By the way, Christina Chang's performance was unique. She got me all the feels. Can't wait to see what is next. Like the show so much.

10 Because I love Lim and I think she deserves more screen time
ants-6185613 June 2021
The episode was good! I did not like the part with the Empath lady that seemed a little OOC for the show but Lim (and Christina Chang) is excellent. If there's one good thing that came from Melendez's departure it's the extra focus on Lim - absolutely love her.

Excellent episode focused on Lim character
gustavo_disalvo25 January 2021
As other people have mentioned, I didn't like at all the necessity for one more show to bring forced messages to our screens when we only want entertainment. I already stopped watching Doctor Who for this (and because the poor writing cannot compensate).

But I needed to write my first review to tell you that in spite of the above, this episode focused on Lim character is great. I like the actress and this is a good example of a "empowered female" character that is portrayed excellently since the first season. If you can pass on the annoying new medical students, and on all the abortion debate, you can't miss this Lim story that is a 10 for me.

Good writing

This episode was filled with emotional depth and ethical dilemmas, with a dose of levity for good measure. I enjoyed it.

Everyone mad about abortion
dixeydog9 May 2023
I find it funny that everyone is getting mad about the abortion thing in this show and like the doctor said that was the right decision for her being the patient just because you don't believe in abortion doesn't mean you should wite nasty reviews about a show just don't watch it you don't have to write a nasty review because you don't have anything else better to do with you life. I also find it funny people believe that is a political aspect its not we separate church and state and if a woman has an ectopic pregnancy it could literally kill her and the only way to save the women's life is to abort do your research people.

Immoral, unrealistic, and dangerous
j_cary8814 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I kinda liked this show. Season 1 & 2 showed promise and I liked the premise of the show. But as it goes on, it followed the trend of other doctor related shows of doing nothing but spreading false political narratives, and gross liberal nonsense.

Bashing Christianity, making it seem like having an objection to abortion/murder is wrong, and making the character have some religious breakthrough that God would ever support abortion in any way is so sick and twisted, I just have no words.

And finally, anyone who would have a fear of hospitals or doctors in general need to stay far away from this show. Every doctor is either immature, or some kind of freak show, and they unrealistically portray doctors and nurses like they can't do their jobs. Just spreading panic all over the place.

I put up with the bad acting because the plots on the episodes were passable at best, but making it seem like abortion (which IS murder) is in any way okay isn't just wrong to put on TV, but it's sick and dangerous. I'm out.

False Christian Doctrine.
kender-725-35842513 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A character in this episode states that she knows that Jesus had already forgiven her for aborting her unborn child, because He allowed her to become a doctor which is her lifetime dream (paraphrased).

Christian forgiveness of sin is based upon a person recognizing their sinfulness and through faith in the Lord Jesus as their personal Lord and savior; asking for forgiveness and seeking to repent.

Any Christian would know not to assert that Jesus had already forgiven them of a self-professed sin, because Jesus had allowed them to enter a particular profession, such as a doctor. This is utter heresy in Christian doctrine.

Why do the show's writers not consult with theologically trained Christian ministers and priests? Do they know anything much about the religion? Do they have an agenda.

Stop with the political indoctrination!!!
tb4now16 January 2021
I have watched every season of the Good Doctor, and it was one of my favorite shows...until now. It has now become one of the many other shows that seems intent on pushing their political views on all of us. This last year has been a nightmare with all the political fighting and forcing of ideas on people. When I'm at home relaxing in front of the TV, my goal is to unwind. I really don't need, or want to see Hollywood's desire to keep force feeding us to believe in what "They" want us believe is right or wrong. So with that said, this is another TV show that I will no longer be watching. On a positive note, I do find myself reading a lot more books these days!

Season 4 has been a severe disappointment and when they showed a murderous abortion procedure I'm out. Watch shows for entertainment not for political indoctrination and brow beating.

Shaming of Pro-Life Advocates? SMH
crltsz8 April 2022
Way to take a good show and use it as a political weapon to shame on pro-life advocates. It appears the only choice is liberal moral values and conservatives can be shamed and put down.

That's it for me. I dropped this show. When we can learn to be unbiased and non-political, we can return. But for now, this felt as a very graphic murder of an innocent life and any objections to that is to be mocked and manipulated and shamed.

Disgraceful
cathieclini4 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The writers of this episode should be ashamed of themselves. Acting like an abortion is no big deal and performing abortions are just part of a surgeons job is horrible.
