Une catastrophe (2008)

*** (out of 4)

It's hard to judge a promotional trailer like this but then you consider that it was Jean-Luc Godard who directed it and your mind immediately tells you that it's not going to be your typical trailer or promo. This one-minute film was released for the 2008 Viennale festival and starts off with a clip from BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN with background audio of a tennis match. Yep, that's the type of thing you'd expect from Godard who seems to have forgotten to put this type of thing in his HISTOIRE(S) DU CINEMA series. Again, it's pretty hard to judge this thing but if you're an admirer of the director's work then you'll want to watch it at least once. There's no question that it's slightly entertaining in its own way and considering the fact that it's Godard, you know it's not going to be quite like anything you've seen before.

Doesn't do a lot for me

Warning: Spoilers
"Une catastrophe" is a (very) short film by Jean-Luc Godard and he is one of France's most successful filmmakers of all time. When he made this very short film we have here, he was in his late 70s and it makes me question if he still has the capability to make good films. It only runs for approximately 90 seconds and it is basically a trailed used to advertise the Vienna Film Festival. Other filmmakers made the same a while ago. Well, what else is there to say. Godard's intention to make a difference is clearly visible in his work here, but it's not working out at all. He pressed in so much into so little that the films lacks focus entirely. Also it is very much unclear if he was making a film about catastrophe or about love as the outcome does not work with regard to either of the two. But at least the title is true in terms of quality. Highly not recommended. Godard's worst perhaps.
