Not hairy or scary enough

Season 1 of 'Scooby Doo and Scrappy Doo' grew on me over-time, though pretty much the rest of the show did not. While liking about half the season's episodes pre-teenagehood, the other half didn't quite do much, and in a couple of cases anything, for me. "The Hairy Scare of Devil Bear" never stood out to me when younger, apart from the opening scene, the Devil Bear's eyes and the ending, the rest was near-immediately forgotten about.

"The Hairy Scare of Devil Bear" is one of the now few episodes of the first season of 'Scooby Doo and Scrappy Doo' to still not do much for me now. It is not terrible, apart from one aspect that was even noticeable as a child, but it is mostly very bland and forgettable. "The Ransom of Scooby Chief" (a Scooby Doo episode that did not feel like Scooby Doo) will always be the worst of the season, but "The Hairy Scare of Devil Bear" is perhaps second worst.

Will start with the good things. There are some nice colours in the animation. The music has its usual character and atmosphere-enhancing, while the theme song has a nice quirky energy and sticks in the head. The voice acting is very good, particularly Casey Kasem and Don Messick who can never be faulted as Shaggy and Scooby. While Scrappy seldom worked for me on this show, Lennie Weinrib's enthusiasm voicing him is undeniable.

Devil Bear's eyes are still creepy, the only thing about him that is. There are also some amusing lines and scenes, such as Scooby's pots and cracks gag and Scrappy's little rain dance. Do think that "The Hairy Scare of the Devil Bear" starts off quite well, with a memorable opening that does see the Devil Bear quite sinister.

However, "The Hairy Scare of Devil Bear" is the worst looking episode of 'Scooby Doo and Scrappy Doo's' Season 1, with much of the animation actually being pretty terrible. Due to glaringly obvious animation errors galore and a lot of shoddy drawing, none of the other fifteen episodes of the season had transitions this careless or the characters looking so rushed looking. Outside of the eyes, the Devil Bear is a very bland and one-dimensional villain that actually do very much other than stand on hind legs and roar in a way that is too obviously human.

Furthermore, the mystery is rather thin and lacks suspense, which makes the story feel very forgettable, and too much of it is stuff and a mix of ideas that we've seen before in other Scooby Doo episodes and better. No real surprises here, and it is amazing that it took the gang so long to get to the truth about the glowing eyes and the roar at one point. That could be easily figured out near immediately.

On the whole, watchable but there are far better episodes in the season. 5/10.
