Quotes
-
FBI FTF SSA Jess LaCroix : We have a fugitive who's gone down the Z-All rabbit hole. She's killed three people already. There may be more. What do you know about them?
Matthew Smit : Well, they were founded on the Z Theory, which says that a shadowy, deep state of powerful figures is in control of America from behind closed doors. Their mission is to expose those in the highest echelons of power.
FBI FTF SSA Jess LaCroix : Expose them for what?
Matthew Smit : Human sacrifices. Pedophilia. Child trafficking.
FBI FTF SSA Jess LaCroix : Right.
Matthew Smit : The thing is, people underestimate them. The media, FBI. No offense. Everyone just labels them as disorganized nutjobs, but they're not.
Special Agent Hana Gibson : So what are they?
Matthew Smit : Relatively new. Dealing with growing pains. The members are more utilitarian than egoist. You know, Bentham said, "It's the greatest good for the greatest number of people that's the measure of right and wrong."
FBI FTF SSA Jess LaCroix : The philosopher. They seem to like him.
Matthew Smit : They genuinely believe they're fighting the good fight. As a group, they're united. As individuals, they tend to be vulnerable, gullible, disillusioned.
Special Agent Hana Gibson : Sounds like Eva.
-
FBI FTF SSA Jess LaCroix : It's like chum in the water. Invent a conspiracy, throw it on the boards, next thing you know, it's gospel.
Special Agent Sheryll Barnes : If the target was the bakery, then why kill the Littles at an NA meeting?
Special Agent Hana Gibson : Maybe Eva's addiction? She's angry at her inability to recover?
FBI FTF SSA Jess LaCroix : Well, it could be, but I'm more concerned about what's next. How many posts are on those boards?
Special Agent Hana Gibson : Thousands.
FBI FTF SSA Jess LaCroix : Thousands? Well, according to Smit, any one of them could be taken as the next hit.
-
FBI FTF SSA Jess LaCroix : New deal, people. Our fugitive has a bomb.
Special Agent Kenny Crosby : Seriously?
FBI FTF SSA Jess LaCroix : Yep.
Special Agent Sheryll Barnes : Z-All didn't tell Eva to kill the Littles. She did it on her own to get their attention like an audition.
FBI FTF SSA Jess LaCroix : She made it look like her next step was to blow up that meeting yesterday, but she never planned on killing the councilman. She just wanted Z-All to think she would.
Special Agent Hana Gibson : Why?
FBI FTF SSA Jess LaCroix : According to Dennis, they parcel out their top-secret documents on a quid pro quo basis. She needs them to trust her. That way, she gets into the inner circle.
Special Agent Sheryll Barnes : Getting Dennis' attention, enabling her access to his bomb.
FBI FTF SSA Jess LaCroix : The question now is, where is she going with it?
-
FBI FTF SSA Jess LaCroix : Okay, say I'm Eva. I got resentment toward my father, disillusionment with academia and the concept of recovery. Where do I go?
Special Agent Hana Gibson : The Internet. It's an echo chamber for the misunderstood.
-
Special Agent Hana Gibson : Our counterintelligence departments don't have any open investigations on Z-All.
Matthew Smit : Because up until now, they've been all bark and no bite. But I've always said that it's the ideology that's the danger. And eventually, someone's gonna act on it. And it only takes one match to start a fire.
FBI FTF SSA Jess LaCroix : And Eva just struck it.
-
FBI FTF SSA Jess LaCroix : Hana, what do we got?
Special Agent Hana Gibson : This ray of sunshine is Eva Martin. 31 years old. She walked into a Narcotics Anonymous meeting in Stanford last night with a 9-millimeter Beretta. Opened fire, killing three.
Special Agent Kenny Crosby : I'm guessing she didn't stick around for coffee and donuts.
Special Agent Hana Gibson : She left her prints on both exit doors. Security footage has her fleeing the scene in a gray sedan. Plates belong to her father, a James Martin in Newark.
FBI FTF SSA Jess LaCroix : Was she in the system?
Special Agent Hana Gibson : Yeah. Priors for possession. Opioids, five years ago. We've got an APB out.
Special Agent Sheryll Barnes : What's our motive? Drug deal gone sideways, maybe?
Special Agent Kenny Crosby : Or a crime of passion. Half the people at these meetings are usually sleeping together.
Special Agent Hana Gibson : Doubtful. The group leader told local PD that this was Eva's first meeting at that location. Nobody knew her.
FBI FTF SSA Jess LaCroix : What about the victims?
Special Agent Hana Gibson : Well, the guy on the floor is Stanley Keel. Three years sober, no family, worked part-time as a security guard. The couple in the corner is Sal and Lucy Little. Married, no kids. They'd been in recovery for over 15 years. Pillars of the NA community.
FBI FTF SSA Jess LaCroix : Look at the blood splatter. Our security guard tried to play hero. Got between Eva and the Littles. She dropped him, and she tracked his blood all the way to the back and shot them both.
Special Agent Kenny Crosby : So the Littles were the target.
FBI FTF SSA Jess LaCroix : She shot 'em point-blank. She wasn't messing around. Anything on next of kin?
Special Agent Hana Gibson : Nothing. The only family they had are their employees at the mom-and-pop pastry shop they opened. Little Bakes and Treats in Westport.
FBI FTF SSA Jess LaCroix : Okay, Barnes and I'll cover Eva's family in Jersey. You two hit the bakery.
Special Agent Kenny Crosby : Sweet! Croissant o'clock!
