Two Months Ago
Ryan walks down the street, and notices two m asked men following her. She ducks into an underpass, but the two masked men get ahead of her ambush her. They grab Ryan's purse, and she tells them that she has no cash. Batwoman drops down and takes them out, and the men finally run off. Batwoman--Kate--takes off on a rappel line, and Ryan yells a "Thank you!" after her.
Later, Ryan interviews for a job as a security guard and says that she has training in a half-dozen martial arts. The interviewer notes that Ryan was in Blackgate Prison, and Ryan tells him that she didn't do it. She pled guilty to minimize her sentence. She insists that Blackgate gave her a valuable skill set, and she good at reading people. Ryan figures that she isn't getting the job.
The news is running video of when the Crows ambushed the original Batwoman at the studio. Jacob is watching it at the Crows HQ, while the newscaster says that a pro-Batwoman rally is planned the next day at Gotham City Plaza to demand Batwoman's return, since she hasn't been seen since the firefight with the Crows. Sophie tells Jacob that Mary and Luke are there.
Jacob and Sophie separately interview Mary and Luke. They both say that they didn't know Kate was Batwoman, and Jacob demands to know who else Kate was close to. Mary insists that Kate pushed her away, and can't think of anyone who sabotaged Kate's plane. Sophie tells Luke that their eliminating possib8ilities, and Luke says that it's a shame Kate didn't have someone who loved her watching her back.
When Sophie walks out and goes past Julia, Julia asks if they can talk. Sophie is angry that Julia didn't tell her that Kate was Batwoman, and Sophie accuses Julia of fooling her... about a lot of things.
Tatiana Ryan is in a pharmacy picking out pills, and two robbers come in and hold up the cashier. When he doesn't respond fast enough, one of the robbers pistol-whips him Ryan takes him out and then takes out the other robber, and goes to the cashier. A Crow comes in and tells Ryan to put her hands in the air, and she does so.
Ryan is taken into custody, and Sophie comes to see her. They know each other, and Ryan says that they've done it before. Sophie asks Ryan if she's tired of covering for her lady friend, and Ryan pointedly tells her the woman is her "ex" lady friend. Ryan insists that she didn't rob the store, and says that she was trying to stop the robbery.
Sophie doesn't believe her, and a Crow comes in and tells Sophie that they have the security footage and Ryan's story checks out. When Sophie apologies for her mistake, Ryan says that the Crows' last mistake cost her 18 months of her life. Sophie tells her she should find a new place if she's always in the wrong place, and Ryan points out that she's been arrested for things she hasn't done more times than Alice has been arrested for things she has done. When Ryan suggests that Jacob is going early on Alice because she's white, Sophie insists that Jacob no longer has sympathy for Alice... assuming Ryan is referring to the fact Alice is Jacob's daughter. Disgusted, Ryan leaves.
Mary is working her clinic when Ryan comes in and asks her if Jacob knows that Mary is involved in the clinic. Ryan has worked out that Alice is Beth Kane, and Mary says that it's complicated. She insists that she would never help Alice, who poisoned her mother. Ryan asks where she can find Alice and says that if Mary does, Ryan will get justice for both their mothers. An orderly brings in Mouse's corpse that two homeless people found.
Julia goes to her car in a parking garage and gets in. Alice is in the backseat and puts a knife to Julia's throat, and says that she's there to save Julia's life. She says that their mutual enemy Safiyah killed Kate before she could, and she proposes a "supervillain/superspy" team-up./Julia says that she isn't scared of Safiyah, and Alice tells her that Safiyah is coming for her and can get to her anywhere. If they work together, they can get to Safiyah before she gets to them. Julia points out that she doesn't trust Alice, and figures that Alice is desperate. With Kate gone, Alice has no one who had any sympathy for her. Unimpressed, Alice sticks her knife in Julia's side and leaves.
Luke comes to the clinic in response to Mary's call, and finds Ryan there. Mouse is badly bitten, and Mary says that the bites were all post-mortem and he died of the same poison that was used on her mother. Alice is the only person who has access to the poison, and Luke and Mary figure that Alice is unraveling if she killed the only person who cared about her.
Mouse's corpse starts convulsing, and a bat flies out of it.
At Gotham City Plaza, Dana Dewitt reports on the rally that has gathered. The trio watches at the clinic, while they watch the bat they captured, that is now in a tank. Luke tells Mary and Ryan that Julia told him that Alice put a knife in her side, and said that she was planning something with a high body count. Ryan suggests that Alice plans to strike at the Batwoman rally, and they have to get the protestors away from the plaza. Mary suggests they have Julia were the Batwoman suit and tell them to go home, but Luke warns that Julia is too hurt. Ryan offers to do it, but Luke figures that people will know Ryan isn't the "real" Batwoman... and Kate wasn't black.
Mary figures that Ryan will do fine, and no one will notice Ryan's skin color if she's on top of a 20-story building. Luke still isn't happy with the idea, but Ryan points out that he's out of options.
At the rally, Crows arrive to try and contain the protestors. Jacob tells Sophie to arrest them, and Kate tells him that the people want Kate back just like they do. On a rooftop above, Batwoman arrives while Luke and Mary monitor her. Batwoman steps out on the balcony, looks "heroic" with Mary's advice, and the protestors spot her. They cheer and Jacob looks up and wonders if it's Kate. He grabs a pair of binoculars and sees that Ryan isn't Kate, and tells his men to get the imposter off the roof.
Batwoman tells the protestors to leave because their lives are in danger. The crowd cheers her instead, and Alice comes up behind Batwoman, slow claps, and says that she doesn't know who Batwoman really is but she isn't Batwoman.
Luke tells Ryan not to engage, and Alice asks what Ryan is doing. Ryan tells Alice that she's going to kill her, and Luke tells Batwoman that she doesn't kill. He says that he isn't going to let her kill, and Ryan tells him that he can't stop her and then shuts down the comm unit.
Alice shoots Batwoman and confirms that she's wearing the real bulletproof Batsuit. She attacks Batwoman hand-to-hand and the two fight. Meanwhile, Luke tells Mary that they shouldn't have let Ryan keep the suit. Mary says that she's not happy with everyone expecting her to get over Alice killing her mother. She says that if Kate had done what Ryan is trying to do, Kate might still be alive.
Batwoman and Alice continue fighting, and Batwoman grabs Alice by the neck. Alice holds up a remote and triggers it. Luke picks up a huge magnetic footprint heading straight for Batwoman. Bats fly out of the air and attack the crowd. Luke reaches Batwoman, who tells him what is going on as Alice escapes. Mary figures they're the bats that bit Mouse's corpse, and are carriers for the toxin that killed him.
Mary heads back to the clinic, and Luke picks up a subsonic frequency drawing the bats to the plaza. He tells Batwoman that she has to find the transmitter and destroy it, Batwoman goes after Alice and says that she'll deal with the transmitter in a minute, and Luke tells her that the protestors don't have a minute. Realizing she can't pursue Alice, Batwoman starts searching for the transmitter.
Jacob tries to shoot down the bats, and Luke brings the suit's echolocation on line. It shows the transmitter hid in a newspaper kiosk, and Batwoman pulls it out. A bat flies toward Sophie, and Batwoiman stops it and tells Sophie to get anyone bit by a bat to the hospital. Batwoman walks off with the transmitter, telling Luke that if she stops it the bats will fly all over Gotham.
At Mary's clinic, Mary and her staff work on the bitten victims. One woman she treats has glowing yellow eyes and starts bleeding from her nose. Mary goes into her office and finds Alice looking for hr. When Mary grabs a gun and aims it at Alice, Alice says that she's not there to kill her only remaining sister. Mary insists that they don't know for sure that Kate is dead. Alice says that she figures there is no hope , and says that there may be hope for the "batfans" and tosses a baggage of Mary's blood on the desk between them. She says that it contains the cure that she gave Mary when she poisoned her, and it's the only thing that will cure the toxin.
Mary wonders why she should believe Alice would give her antidote, and says that Alice really misses Kate and it's her sick way of grieving. Alice starts to walk out, and tells Mary that she met the new Batwoman and she's willing to kill her, and Batwoman will be a "handful".
Batwoman, holding the transmitter, drives the Batmobile through the city streets. The bats follow the transmitter.
Sophie brings in more victims arrive from the hospital, and Mary tells her that she has an antidote from Alice. When Sophie warns that they can't trust Alice, Mary tells her that they don't have a choice. If she gives the cure to Hamilton Dynamics, they can synthesize enough to cure everyone.
Luke tries to find somewhere close enough and abandoned enough that Batwoman can take the bats to. She spots an oncoming Crow and stops it, and tells the driver to leave. She then leaves the transmitter on one of the seats, opens the back door, and lets the bats fly in. Once they're all in, Batwoman gets out the back, closes the door, and blows up the bus with a shaped Batcharge. She rescues a nearby homeless woman, who says that Ryan is Batwoman to her.
The next day, Dana is reporting on the distribution of the cure. Sophie and Mary are watching the newscast at the broadcast, and Mary complains that Hamilton Dynamics isn't crediting her. Sophie wonders what Alice's play is, and figures that she has something larger in mind... and hopes the new Batwoman is ready for it.
At the Crows HQ, Sophie asks Julia if she knows who Batwoman is. Julia says that she doesn't and wonders if there's any answer she could give that Sophie would believe. Sophie admits that there probably isn't, and Julia gives her Alice's probable, location, based on traces of tri-ethyl benzene that Alice's boots left on the mats of her car. The traces lead to an abandoned motor plant, and Sophie says that they should keep the information between them for fear of scaring Alice off.
As Sophie goes, Julia asks her if Kate said she loved her in the letter. Sophie says that it doesn't matter, and Julia wonders if it's over between them because Sophie doesn't trust her, or Julia isn't Kate. Before walking off, Sophie says that it's both.
Jacob has Mary brought in and apologizes for treating her as a suspect earlier. He says that he doesn't want to make the same with Alice, and wonders if Kate is still alive. Mary says that if they're going to find Kate, they'll have to work together, and Jacob hugs hr.
In the Batcave, Ryan returns the Batsuit. When Luke and Mary return, Ryan says that she was hoping they'd let her keep the suit. Luke tells her that they already have a Batwoman, and Ryan points out that she wasn't there. Ryan tells them that the city needs hope, and asks Luke to give her a chance to give the city hope. Luke points out that Kate was the top of her class at military academy, but Ryan figures that she's been trapped in a life surrounded by criminals and knows how they think.
Mary figures that Gotham will need Batwoman if Alice is planning something big... and she agrees. Luke tells Ryan that Batwoman has a no-killing code, and Ryan agrees. Mary shows Ryan around the Batcave, and Luke looks at the Batsuit.
On the radio, Vesper talks about the return of Batwoman, but she may be a new one.
In the Batcave, Ryan looks at the equipment. She looks at several journals and opens one, and finds an entry from Kate about how she saved Ryan against the two robbers. Kate thought that Ryan was the hope that Gotham needed. Ryan starts writing her own entry in the journal, addressing it to Kate.
Sophie finds Alice at the motor plant and arrests her. A woman, Whisper, puts a sword to Sophie's neck and tells her that Alice is hers. Whisper knocks Sophie out, and tells Alice that her "stunt" with the cure has drawn Safiyah's wrath. Alice says that was what she intended, and figures if Whisper was ordered to kill her, Alice would already be dead. She figures that Safiyah wants to see her, and Whisper knocks her unconscious.
