Tries too hard to do too much
JP_Asher10 February 2011
After a quick skim through of the other reviews here, it would seem that I'm not alone when I say that although this low-budget independent film has its moments, it really simply tries too hard to pack too much substance into a film that doesn't particularly need too much to be an enjoyable experience. I'll try not to give too much away, but the film basically involves a trip by Gillingham football supporters up to Newcastle (at the other end of the country, about 300 miles away).

One odd thing I will mention which I don't think really gives anything away is the film's opening. It starts on a blank screen as you hear a few guys talking to each other about star signs. Naturally, you assume that these are the film's main characters -- but it turns out that they are only featured in one scene. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it just seems like a strange way to open the film. And the song "Tom Hark" is played to death in the travel scenes -- a bit more variance on the score would have been nice.

But the main reason why this film fails to deliver is simply because it tries too hard to be more than it needs to be. The cast largely consists of stock characters (oligatory fat bloke who farts a lot, lovable old grandad and so forth) but this could be entirely forgiven if the movie didn't try to take itself so seriously and juggle so many simultaneous story lines: It doesn't help matters that these side-stories involve pretty heavy material (which I won't give away). There are some rather large pinches of salt you have to take with the plot (an entire coachload of people fails to recognise the difference between Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Newcastle-under-Lyme, for example), but this also could be put aside if this attempt at a "charming British film" had been properly executed.

The film's only main female character is the aforementioned lovable old grandad's flirtatious grand-daughter, who seems to have been put into the film simply to appeal to that Soccer AM-watching demographic of young teenagers. It's given away pretty early that the girl has been away for a very long time and the grandfather wants to take her to see his favourite football team. However, although the young lady's back-story is that she's been travelling the world (they mention pretty much every country as somewhere she has been to), she simply isn't presented in a way that matches this introduction and thus is somewhat implausible. The film-makers also try too hard to make you find the girl attractive, which ironically has the opposite effect, as with the greatest respect to the actress the character presented is a complete slapper.

The film would have been much better had it starred the two main characters going alone up to Newcastle and meeting all of the supporting characters along the way in the service-stations, pubs and so forth. As it is, it tries to carry more weight than it can hold. Overall, it is still not by any means a bad film, and it does have some very good moments -- but don't watch this expecting a cheery booze-and-football "buddy film". It tries to present real-life football fans in a real-life setting, but in doing so it tries to be far more than it needs to be, and this ultimately lets it down. It's still worth a watch if you get the chance, but don't expect a masterpiece.

Not bad
Gubby-Allen14 June 2010
Not a bad film, a little better than the 5.0 suggests. A good blend of characters let down only by the fact they cover every dynamic of person possible, amusing & easy storyline to follow & two or three hilarious moments. Nothing overtly great about it, but so long as you put aside the following flaws well worth a watch: 1) It's difficult to believe an entire bus full of people could all mistake Newcastle under Lyme for Newcastle, for too long we never had an understanding of where the bus was.

2) The timeline of the film & the emphasis on the opening scene (with the West Ham fans) was a peculiar angle to take. There were half-a-dozen scenes of more significance than that one (even including moments at either end of that scene). Why it was deemed that important to the film I don't know - even characters within it, never crop up again, yet have the lines to open the film & are deemed the main cast.

3) For a comedy there were a few segments with little humour - deliberately so - more character driven scenes, but at odds with the rest of the film.

But all in all, a good effort, you'll see a lot worse films of this type, than this.

My 322nd Review: Empty vessels make most noise...
intelearts20 April 2010
The Shouting Men is a comedy that tries to be a classic British working class slice of life comedy but is full of characters that are pretty much caricatures. The only words we could think of to describe this is weak - it is an an uneasy mix of weak comedy and caricatures of people that wouldn't possibly be real.

The plot of a bus load of supporters sharing a min-bus(Completely demographic: Race, Age, Gender, Disability: all boxes ticked; and I started to feel like I was being manipulated (and doing community service)) is fairly tragic, and whiles there's some good thinking, the script is way too frantic and way way too maudlin and truly lacks definition.

This would have worked so much better as a buddy movie - there are way too many characters and it just falls flat trying to juggle all the story lines. If the two main characters has had a road trip and met these people along the way it might just have been watchable - but then again...(I may be on my own here, as I write this it's got 16 votes and 8.2, so what do I know?)

All in all, a crashing disappointment, very few laughs, the drama is very heavy-handed, and worse, blatantly manipulative, and is massively guilty of being unable to find either its real heart or the heart of the beautiful game.

A Carry On film without the Carry On!
Victor-fitforlife21 January 2021
Started well for about 10 minutes, then It disintegrated into unfunny caricatures, sloppy dialogue and endless inane chatter. The best thing I can say about this film is it was boring...and the character of Terry was the most boring of the lot. I hope the guys behind it don't ever try their hand at movie making again, but if they do they should stick to home movies and keep it exclusively for their families eyes!

Underrated funny comedy !!
datahoover4 May 2010
I feel this film has been underrated by many people, after all it is meant to be a comedy and not a true to life story, I have read some other reviews that appear to compare the movie and characters to real life situations but I feel the intention was not to mimic true facts and make a movie filled with amusing characters instead

I first watched this expecting it to be a lot worse than it was so was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be a pretty funny movie; some of the characters are hilarious.

Parts of the storyline were predictable, but even so it did not take away from the fact it was a funny movie well worth watching.
