Although tabloids from Ireland tended to give Terry Wogan a hard time, the Irish Independent (25th June 1986) also had harsh words for Derek Jameson as stand-in host, with their TV listing for this edition simply reading: "Bulldog Derek Jameson is tonight's host, Cockney codswallop."
It was reported in multiple newspapers that George Best was due to be a guest on this edition, but withdrew.
The Newcastle Evening Chronicle (26th June 1986) stated:
"GEORGE BEST cancelled plans to make a BBC "comeback" on the Wogan show last night, only three weeks after walking out on a World Cup panel. The 40-year-old former soccer star was to have appeared on the chat show hosted by Derek Jameson In Terry Wogan's absence. But in a trailer of the show, Jameson announced that Best had disappeared."
Different details emerged in different newspapers. On the day of broadcast the Daily Mirror (25th June 1986) reported that Best pulling out of his appearance had already been anticipated, with a non-specified stand-in: "[...] but just in case George doesn't appear, the Beeb has a replacement raedy (sic) to stand in at the last moment."
The Reading Evening Post (26th June 1986) suggested that the decision was known some hours ahead of the broadcast: "The BBC said Best's manager had cancelled the date yesterday morning."
